Philosophers of evolutionary biology favor the so-called etiological concept of function according to which the function of a trait is its evolutionary purpose, defined as the effect for which that trait was favored by natural selection. We term this the selected effect (SE) analysis of function. An alternative account of function was introduced by Robert Cummins in a non-evolutionary and non-purposive context. Cummins's account has received attention but little support from philosophers of biology. This paper will show that a similar non-purposive concept of function, which we term causal role (CR) function, is crucial to certain research programs in evolutionary biology, and that philosophical criticisms of Cummins's concept are ineffective in this scientific context. Specifically, we demonstrate that CR functions are a vital and ineliminable part of research in comparative and functional anatomy, and that biological categories used by anatomists are not defined by the application of SE functional analysis. Causal role functions are non-historically defined, but may themselves be used in an historical analysis. Furthermore, we show that a philosophical insistence on the primary of SE functions places practicing biologists in an untenable position, as such functions can rarely be demonstrated (in contrast to CR functions). Biologists who study the form and function of organismal design recognize that it is virtually impossible to identify the past action of selection on any particular structure retrospectively, a requirement for recognizing SE functions.  相似文献

Individual loci affecting economically important traits can be located using genetic linkage between quantitative trait loci and genetic markers. In the ‘granddaughter’ experimental design, heterozygous grandsires and their sons are genotyped for the genetic marker, while the quantitative trait records of the granddaughters are used for statistical analysis. Ten DNA microsatellite markers were used to look for associations with quantitative trait loci affecting milk production traits in seven Israeli Holstein grandsire families. At least 60% more grandsires were heterozygous, and 40% fewer individuals were discarded because of unknown paternal allele origin, as compared with diallelic markers. The effects of paternal alleles for locus D21S4 on kg milk and protein were significant (P < 0.025). The allele substitution effects for sire 783 were 283 kg milk and 5.7 kg protein. For both traits, progeny of sire 783 that inherited allele ‘18’ had higher evaluations than progeny that inherited allele ‘21’. These results were verified by genotyping 151 of his daughters. Thus, the rate of genetic gain for protein production can be increased by selecting progeny of sire 783 carrying allele ‘18’ at this locus.  相似文献

Cytoplasmic membrane vesicles with either normal or inverted orientation were prepared from Escherichia coli. The lactose transport activity of these vesicle preparations was compared. The parameters measured were net efflux, counterflux, and K+/valinomycin-induced active uptake of lactose. With membrane vesicles derived from both wild-type and cytochrome-deficient strains the right-side-out and inverted membrane preparations showed similar rates of lactose flux in all assays. According to these criteria, the activity of the β-galactoside transport protein is inherently symmetrical.One major difference was observed between the native and inverted vesicle preparations: the inverted vesicles had approximately twice the specific activity of native vesicles in the counterflux and K+/valinomycin-induced uptake assays. This difference can be largely ascribed to the presence in the normal vesicle preparation of vesicles with a high passive permeability to lactose. Such vesicles are apparently absent from the inverted vesicle preparations.  相似文献

The reticuloendotheliosis viruses (REVs), originally isolated from avian species, constitute a group of retroviruses which are more closely related to mammalian retroviruses than to other avian retroviruses. The envelope glycoproteins of members of the REV group display a striking amino acid sequence identity with a group of primate oncoretroviruses which belong to a single receptor interference group and include all of the type D and some type C primate oncoretroviruses. Members of the REV group also have a broad host range which covers most avian cells and some mammalian cells, including those of simian and human origin. In view of this broad host range and the envelope sequence similarities, we investigated the cross-interference pattern between REV and primate virus groups to determine whether they utilized the same receptor. Superinfection experiments using a vector virus containing an Escherichia coli lacZ gene showed that reticuloendotheliosis and simian oncoretroviruses constitute a single receptor interference group on both human and canine cells and indicate that the viruses bind to the same receptor to initiate infection. These results suggest that this receptor binding specificity has been maintained over a wide range of retroviruses and may be responsible for the broad spread of these retroviruses between different orders of vertebrates.  相似文献

An extensive colonization of the endorhizosphere by fluorescent pseudomonads was observed in tomato plants grown on artificial substrates. These studies reveal that a significantly higher percentage of pseudomonads obtained from the endorhizosphere (30%) reduced plant growth than those obtained from the root surface (4%). Lipopolysaccharide patterns, cell envelope protein patterns, and other biochemical characteristics indicated that Pseudomonas isolates obtained from the endorhizosphere are distinct from Pseudomonas isolates obtained from the root surface. Isolates from the endorhizosphere especially were able to recolonize the endorhizosphere of both sterile and nonsterile tomato roots. The ability of the endorhizosphere isolates to colonize the endorhizosphere significantly correlated with their agglutination by tomato root agglutinin but did not correlate with chemotaxis to seed exudates of tomato. No correlation between colonization of the endorhizosphere and agglutination by root agglutinin could be demonstrated for the root surface isolates. We propose that agglutination of specific Pseudomonas strains by root agglutinin is of importance in the initial phase of adherence of bacteria to the root surface.  相似文献
