Lifestyle and fertility: the influence of stress and quality of life on female fertility

There is growing evidence that lifestyle choices account for the overall quality of health and life (QoL) reflecting many potential lifestyle risks widely associated with alterations of the reproductive function up to the infertility. This review aims to summarize in a critical fashion the current knowledge about the potential effects of stress and QoL on female reproductive function. A specific literature search up to August 2017 was performed in IBSS, SocINDEX, Institute for Scientific Information, PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Current review highlights a close relationship in women between stress, QoL and reproductive function, that this association is more likely reported in infertile rather than fertile women, and that a vicious circle makes them to have supported each other. However, a precise cause-effect relationship is still difficult to demonstrate due to conflicting results and the lack of objective measures/instruments of evaluation.     

A simple method for cloning genes involved in glucan biosynthesis: isolation of structural and regulatory genes for glycogen synthesis in Escherichia coli.

A simple and widely applicable method for cloning genes involved in glucan biosynthesis is described. An Escherichia coli genomic library was prepared in the low-copy plasmid, pLG339, and E. coli transformants from this library were screened by staining with iodine vapor. Colonies that stained darker than the control were isolated and characterized. The three classes of clones that were identified included: (i) plasmids encoding E. coli glycogen biosynthetic (glg) structural genes, (ii) clones that resulted in elevated glycogen levels, but did not encode glg structural genes or enhance the level of the first enzyme of the pathway, ADPglucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPP), and (iii) clones that enhanced the level of AGPP, but did not encode this enzyme. Two clones from the latter class also enhanced glgC'-'lacZ-encoded beta-galactosidase activity, and may encode factors that regulate the expression of glg structural genes. It should be possible to readily clone glycogen biosynthetic genes from other bacterial species via this method. The method could be made specific for a desired glg gene by using a recipient strain that is defective in the gene of interest.     

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius Linnaeus 1758) harpoon fishery: a method of evaluation of swordfish presence in the Strait of Messina (Central Mediterranean Sea)

The objective of this study was to examine the space and environment variables that contributed to the presence of swordfish in the Strait of Messina during the 2003 and 2004 harpoon fishing activity. The relationships between catches per location and environmental factors (current, moon phase and sea surface temperature) were analyzed using a generalized linear model (GLM). The GLM analysis showed differences in CPUE (catch per unit effort) values in terms of swordfish numbers per location over the 2‐year period. The central locations of the Strait were found to be teeming with fish; the CPUE was also higher in these areas during the new and rising moon phases.     

Autosomal dominant atrial septal defect of ostium secundum type. Report of three families

The authors report on three Sicilian families with 17 individuals (10 females and 7 males) in successive generations affected by atrial septal defect of ostium secundum type (S-ASD) without conduction defect. The anomaly was inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Cytoplasmic inheritance could be excluded, the anomaly being transmitted also by fathers. Familial S-ASD is probably more frequent than commonly reported since cardiological examination of the relatives is not routinely performed in every case of apparently sporadic ASD.     

PROMOTION OF CELL ARREST IN G2 DURING CELL MATURATION IN ROOTS OF PISUM SATIVUM BY EXOGENOUSLY APPLIED CYCLIC AMP

Cyclic AMP and dibutyryl cyclic AMP promoted cell arrest in G2 in roots during tissue maturation in seedlings of Pisum sativum when applied in lanolin after cotyledon excision. 5' AMP did not promote arrest in G2 in a similar manner. Results demonstrate that cyclic AMP did not inhibit cell proliferation in root meristems when applied exogenously.
