This paper provides data on age, growth and diet of the bluemouth rockfish, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (Scorpaenidae), central Mediterranean Sea. Estimated by otolith readings, ages ranged from 0 to 21 years. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth curves were Linf = 26.1 cm, k = 0.14 year?1, t0 = ?1.92 years and the growth performance index was Φ = 1.98. The weight‐length relationship, W = 0.016 TL2.99; R2 = 0.99, described an isometric growth of the species. This species is a carnivore focusing mainly on the crustaceans Goneplax rhomboides and Lophogaster typicus. Statistical analysis showed an ontogenetic shift between small (4.0–6.3 cm) and larger fishes. Significant differences were also found in relation to the sampling depth. 相似文献

Human haptoglobin 1-1 binds very rapidly to hemoglobin dimers but not to tetramers. We have studied the binding kinetics of partially oxygenated Hb A to haptoglobin 1-1. Under the oxygenation conditions used for the measurement of the K1 of oxygenation (, pO2 ≤ 0.5 mm Hg), the dissociation kinetics were found to be 50 times faster than that of deoxy Hb A. This result suggested that the binding of one molecule of oxygen to hemoglobin tetramer changed the quaternary structure of the intersubunit α1β2 contact surface. 相似文献

- Echolocation is the ability of some animals to orient themselves through sound emission and interpretation of the echoes. This is bats’ main sense for orientation and recognising biotopes that provide food, water, and roosts. It is widely accepted that echolocation call frequency is related to body mass, and this relationship has been described as the ‘allometric hypothesis’, which proposes a negative correlation between these variables.
- There is evidence that, in many cases, the allometric hypothesis does not apply. Additionally, studies supporting this hypothesis were done at the family level, resulting in a broad range of correlation values with r ranging from −0.36 to −0.76, and only insectivorous bats were included. Due to the notable exceptions and the lack of a quantitative synthesis of this hypothesis including all echolocating bats, we evaluated the allometric hypothesis of echolocation calls for this group.
- Using a meta-analysis and phylogenetic generalised least-squares techniques, we evaluated the relationship between echolocation call peak frequency and the body mass of bats.
- We found a negative relationship between body mass and echolocation call peak frequency for the 85 bat species that were included in our analysis (r = −0.3, p = 0.005). The relationship was consistent when we analysed the data at the insectivorous guild level, and in bats belonging to the families Vespertilionidae, Rhinolophidae, Emballonuridae, and the genus Myotis. However, the wide range of r values suggests that the strength of the relationship between peak frequency and body mass varies within the order Chiroptera.
- Our results support the allometric hypothesis of sound production in echolocating bats. However, the low coefficient we found suggests that factors other than body mass may influence the peak frequency of echolocation calls produced by bats.

Mean activity of the enzyme uroporphyrinogen III cosynthetase in hemolysates from five asymptomatic carriers of bovine erythropoietic porphyria was intermediate to the means of the activities in normal controls and affected animals. Similarly, mean cosynthetase activity in hemolysates from eight presumed carriers of human congenital erythropoietic porphyria was lower than the mean for 38 nonporphyric individuals and higher than the activity in hemolysates from patients. These results are consistent with the known autosomal recessive mode of inheritance of the disorder in cattle and the presumed autosomal recessive inheritance in man. The activity of cosynthetase is higher in young red cells than in older ones, which explains the relatively high enzyme activities in blood from human patients with nonporphyric hemolytic disorders accompanied by reticulocytosis. Natural and synthetic melanins have been studied by optical absorption and photoconductivity measurements in the range 200–700 nm. Both optical absorption and photoconductivity increase in the ultraviolet region, and a negative photoconductivity was observed with a maximum near 500 nm. The effects of an antisense oligodeoxynucleotide to codons 2-7 of the oncogene MYCN on the human neuroblastoma cell line LAN-5 were studied. Treated cells showed a decreased MYCN protein expression and synthesis by immunoperoxidase staining and immunoprecipitation. At the same time, the replication rate was inhibited, and the phenotype was modified toward a more differentiated type. Our data suggest the involvement of oncogene MYCN in both proliferative and differentiative processes. 相似文献
