Cultivation of Aspergillus niger in a pilot plant external-loop air-lift bioreactor

Abstract: Changes of the main hydrodynamic and oxygen transfer parameters during Aspergillus niger cultivation in an external-loop air-lift bioreactor of 200 dm³ operating capacity were investigated. The final average concentrations of biomass and citric acid obtained in batch fermentations were about 17 g 1^-1 and 90 g 1^-1, respectively. Significant influence of the increasing biomass concentration on the rheological properties of the broth and operating parameters was found. Volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient. k ^L a , was found to be dependent on the apparent viscosity of the broth with an exponent of -0.984.     

Characterization of Le(x), Le(y) and A Le(y) antigen determinants in KDN-containing O-linked glycan chains from Pleurodeles waltlii jelly coat eggs.

Novel acidic oligosaccharides were isolated in large amounts by reductive alkaline treatment of the jelly coat of Pleurodeles waltlii (Michah) eggs. The oligosaccharides were found to contain the newly described KDN as acidic monosaccharide and possess either the Le(x), Le(y) and A Le(y) antigenic determinants. Occurrence of Le(x) and Le(y) determinants previously recognized as tumor-associated antigen (TAA) demonstrates that mucins of lower animals may represent a rich and easily available source for preparing TAA. Moreover, it reinforces the hypothesis according to which TAA are evolution markers.

The effective synthesis of 4,4,14α-trimethyl-19 (10 → 9β) abeo-steroids (iv), (v), and (Vl) with two- and five-carbon side chains from lanosterol is described. Their structures were proved on the basis of spectral data. The title compounds are the first synthetic synthons for the preparation of 4,4,14α-trimethyl-steroids with an unnatural configuration.     

Comparative Genomics of Marine Mussels (Mytilus spp.) Gender Associated mtDNA: Rapidly Evolving atp8

The unusual mode of mitochondrial DNA inheritance, with two separate: maternal (F) and paternal (M) lineages, gives unique opportunities to study the evolution of the mitochondrial genome. This system was first discovered in the marine mussels Mytilus. The three related species: Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Mytilus trossulus form a complex in which the divergence of M and F lineages pre-dates the speciation. The complete mitochondrial genomes of both lineages were known for all species except Pacific M. trossulus. Here we report, for the first time, the complete sequences of both mitochondrial genomes of Pacific M. trossulus, filling the gap. While the reported M and F genomes are highly diverged (26%), they have similar organisation. The only difference is the translocation of one tRNA gene into the long, mosaic control region of the F genome. Consistent presence of an ORF which most likely represents the atp8 gene was confirmed in both genomes. The predicted protein has characteristics expected of the functional atp8 even though the M and F versions are markedly different in length. Comparative analysis involving all three species led to the conclusion that the cause of a faster evolution of atp8 and Mytilus mtDNA in general is most likely the Compensation-Draft Feedback process coupled with relatively relaxed selection in the M lineage. Thus, we postulate that the adaptive changes may have played a role in the emergence of highly diverged, barely recognizable atp8 in Mytilus mussels.
