Novel predator–prey interactions can contribute to the invasion success of non‐native predators. For example, native prey can fail to recognize and avoid non‐native predators due to a lack of co‐evolutionary history and cue dissimilarity with native predators. This might result in a competitive advantage for non‐native predators. Numerous lady beetle species were globally redistributed as biological control agents against aphids, resulting in novel predator–prey interactions. Here, we investigated the strength of avoidance behavior of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) toward chemical cues of native lady beetles and non‐native Asian Harmonia axyridis and European Coccinella septempunctata and Hippodamia variegata in North America, hypothesizing that cues of non‐native lady beetles induce weaker avoidance behavior than cues of co‐evolved native lady beetles. Additionally, we compared aphid consumption of lady beetles, examining potential predation advantages of non‐native lady beetles. Finally, we compared cue avoidance behavior between North American and European pea aphid populations and aphid consumption of native and non‐native lady beetles in North America and Europe. In North America, pea aphids avoided chemical cues of all ladybeetle species tested, regardless of their origin. In contrast to pea aphids in North America, European pea aphids did not avoid cues of the non‐native H. axyridis. The non‐native H. axyridis and C. septempunctata were among the largest and most voracious lady beetle species tested, on both continents. Consequently, in North America non‐native lady beetle species might have a competitive advantage on shared food resources due to their relatively large body size, compared to several native American lady beetle species. In Europe, however, non‐native H. axyridis might benefit from missing aphid cue avoidance as well as a large body size. The co‐evolutionary time gap between the European and North American invasion of H. axyridis likely explains the intercontinental differences in cue avoidance behavior and might indicate evolution in aphids toward non‐native predators. 相似文献

In the 1990s, an extraordinarily abundant live collection of the genus Pinus, including 49 species, 4 subspecies, and 7 interspecific hybrids, found in the Sochi Arboretum in Russia on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, was taxonomically revised. Among these taxa, two previously unknown interspecific hybrids of American hard pine species from P. sect. Trifoliae had arisen spontaneously in culture. These are described here as the new hybrid species Pinus × transamericana (P. muricata × P. rigida) and Pinus × critchfieldii (P. patula × P. taeda). Inadequate magnesium (Mg) intake is a widespread problem, with over 50% of women of reproductive age consuming less than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Because pregnancy increases the requirement for Mg and the beneficial effects of magnesium sulfate for preeclampsia/eclampsia and fetal neuroprotection are well described, we examined the outcomes of Mg deficiency during pregnancy. Briefly, pregnant Swiss Webster mice were fed either control or Mg-deficient diets starting on gestational day (GD) 6 through euthanasia on GD17. Mg-deficient dams had significantly reduced weight gain and higher plasma adipokines, in the absence of inflammation. Livers of Mg-deficient dams had significantly higher saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and lower polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (P < 0.0001) and arachidonic acid (AA) (P < 0.0001). Mechanistically, Mg deficiency was accompanied by enhanced desaturase and elongase mRNA expression in maternal livers along with higher circulating insulin and glucose concentrations (P < 0.05) and increased mRNA expression of Srebf1 and Chrebp, regulators of fatty acid synthesis (P < 0.05). Fetal pups exposed to Mg deficiency were growth-restricted and exhibited reduced survival. Mg-deficient fetal livers showed lower MUFAs and higher PUFAs, with lower desaturase and elongase mRNA expression than controls. In addition, DHA concentrations were lower in Mg-deficient fetal brains (P < 0.05). These results indicate that Mg deficiency during pregnancy influences both maternal and fetal fatty acid metabolism, fetal growth and fetal survival, and support better understanding maternal Mg status before and during pregnancy. 相似文献

Latarcins, linear peptides from the Lachesana tarabaevi spider venom, exhibit a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, likely acting on the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. We study their spatial structures and interaction with model membranes by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods to reveal the structure-activity relationship. In this work, a 26 amino acid peptide, Ltc1, was investigated. Its spatial structure in detergent micelles was determined by (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and refined by Monte Carlo simulations in an implicit water-octanol slab. The Ltc1 molecule was found to form a straight uninterrupted amphiphilic helix comprising 8-23 residues. A dye-leakage fluorescent assay and (31)P NMR spectroscopy established that the peptide does not induce the release of fluorescent marker nor deteriorate the bilayer structure of the membranes. The voltage-clamp technique showed that Ltc1 induces the current fluctuations through planar membranes when the sign of the applied potential coincides with the one across the bacterial inner membrane. This implies that Ltc1 acts on the membranes via a specific mechanism, which is different from the carpet mode demonstrated by another latarcin, Ltc2a, featuring a helix-hinge-helix structure with a hydrophobicity gradient along the peptide chain. In contrast, the hydrophobic surface of the Ltc1 helix is narrow-shaped and extends with no gradient along the axis. We have also disclosed a number of peptides, structurally homologous to Ltc1 and exhibiting similar membrane activity. This indicates that the hydrophobic pattern of the Ltc1 helix and related antimicrobial peptides specifies their activity mechanism. The protein component of the myelin layer is essential for all aspects of peripheral nerves, and its deficiency can lead to structural and functional impairment. The presence of peripheral myelin protein 2 (P2, PMP2, FABP8, M-FABP) in Schwann cells has been known for decades and shown recently to be involved in the lipid homeostasis in the peripheral neural system. However, its precise role during de- and remyelination has yet to be elucidated. To this end, we assessed remyelination after sciatic nerve crush injury in vivo, and in an experimental de/remyelination ex vivo myelinating culture model in P2-deficient (P2 ?/? ) and wild-type (WT) animals. In vivo, the nerve crush paradigm revealed temporal structural and functional changes in P2 ?/? mice as compared to WT animals. Concomitantly, P2 ?/? DRG cultures demonstrated the presence of shorter internodes and enlarged nodes after ex vivo de/remyelination. Together, these data indicate that P2 may play a role in remyelination of the injured peripheral nervous system, presumably by affecting the nodal and internodal configuration. 相似文献
