The role of olfactory cues for host search is much less investigated in day‐active butterflies than in their relatives, the nocturnal moths. The goal of this study was to investigate whether host‐plant volatiles from foliar extracts of hop, Humulus lupulus L. (Cannabaceae), evoke electroantennographic (EAG) responses, increase landing rates, and stimulate egg‐laying behavior of gravid Polygonia c‐album L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) females. Eighty‐nine volatile compounds were detected in a non‐concentrated methanol extract of hop by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, 11 of which elicited an EAG response. Concentration of the crude extract significantly reduced landing rates on artificial leaves treated with the sample due to loss of volatile compounds, but after landing the oviposition response of gravid females was not affected. A mixture of eight commercially available EAG‐active volatiles increased the landing rate of gravid females to their source but did not act as oviposition stimulants. Dividing the volatile compounds into two groups – consisting of (1) hexanal, (E)‐2‐hexenal, octanal, nonanal, and decanal, and (2) sulcatone, humulene, and benzyl alcohol – obliterated effectiveness, revealing synergism between compounds. Although volatiles did not stimulate oviposition, they significantly contributed to the distribution of eggs by increasing the landing rates on treated artificial leaves.  相似文献

Iguanas (Pleurodonta) are predominantly distributed in the New World, but one previously cytogenetically understudied family, Opluridae, is endemic to Madagascar and the adjacent Grand Comoro archipelago. The aim of our contribution is to fill a gap in the cytogenetic understanding of this biogeographically puzzling lineage. Based on examination of six species, we found that oplurids are rather conservative in karyotype, which is composed of 36 chromosomes as in most iguanas. However, the species differ in the position of the nucleolar organizer region and heterochromatic blocks and in the accumulation and distribution of interstitial telomeric sequences (ITSs), which suggests cryptic intra‐ and interchromosomal rearrangements. All tested species share the XY sex‐determining system homologous to most other iguana families. The oplurid Y chromosome is degenerated, very small in size but mostly euchromatic. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with probes composed of microsatellite motifs revealed variability among species in the accumulation of particular repeats on the Y chromosome. This variability accounts for the differences in the detection of sex chromosomes across the species of the family using comparative genome hybridization (CGH) technique. Our study demonstrates the limits of the commonly used CGH technique to uncover sex chromosomes even in organisms with heteromorphic and sequentially largely differentiated sex chromosomes.  相似文献

Plants have evolved several strategies to cope with disturbance, and one strategy is tolerance. In tolerance, plants store resources (meristems, carbohydrates) so that they can resprout after disturbance and thereby compensate to some degree for losses. Because tolerance is costly (it occurs at the expense of current growth), we can expect adaptation to the local disturbance regime. In this study, we determined whether populations of a common European annual weed, Euphorbia peplus, are adapted to the local disturbance regime. We hypothesized that the tolerance and hence compensation for losses in seed and biomass production after experimental damage are greater in plants from more severely disturbed than from less severely disturbed populations. We also hypothesized that transgenerational effects can alter adaptation. We found that compensation for biomass loss to damage was greater for plants from more severely disturbed habitats than for plants from less severely disturbed habitats. This, however, was not at the expense of growth before damage because plants from both disturbance regimes did not show differences when not damaged. Transgenerational effects played a positive role in adaptation to disturbance during germination and maturity. We conclude that local adaptation together with transgenerational effects have evolved in more severely disturbed populations but not in less severely disturbed populations of E. peplus.  相似文献

In the last decade, taxonomic studies have drastically increased the number of species known to inhabit the Arabian deserts. While ongoing phylogenetic studies continue to identify new species and high levels of intraspecific genetic diversity, few studies have yet explored the biogeographic patterns in this arid region using an integrative approach. In the present work, we apply different phylogenetic methods to infer relationships within the Palearctic naked‐toed geckos. We specifically address for the first time the taxonomy and biogeography of Bunopus spatalurus Anderson, 1901, from Arabia using multilocus concatenated and species tree phylogenies, haplotype networks and morphology. We also use species distribution modelling and phylogeographic interpolation to explore the phylogeographic structure of Bunopus spatalurus hajarensis in the Hajar Mountains and the roles of climatic stability and possible biogeographic barriers on lineage occurrence and contact zones in this arid mountain endemism hot spot. According to the inferred topology recovered using concatenated and species tree methods, the genus ‘Bunopus’ is polyphyletic. Bunopus tuberculatus and B. blanfordii form a highly supported clade closely related to Crossobamon orientalis, while the two subspecies of ‘Bunopus’ spatalurus branch together as an independent highly supported clade that diverged during the Miocene according to our estimations. Within B. s. hajarensis, three geographically structured clades can be recognized that according to our estimations diverged during the Late Miocene to Pliocene. The paleodistribution models indicate climatic stability during the Late Pleistocene and the lineage occurrence, and predicted contact zones obtained from phylogeographic interpolation therefore probably result from the older splits of the groups when these lineages originated in allopatry. As demonstrated by the results of the multilocus molecular phylogenetic analyses and the topological test carried out in this study, the genus ‘Bunopus’ is not monophyletic. To resolve this, we resurrect the genus Trachydactylus Haas and Battersby, 1959; for the species formerly referred to as Bunopus spatalurus. Considering the morphological differences, the high level of genetic differentiation in the 12S mitochondrial gene and the results of the phylogenetic and the cmos haplotype network analysis, we elevate Trachydactylus spatalurus hajarensis to the species level Trachydactylus hajarensis (Arnold, 1980).  相似文献
