Summary When nonexchangeable absorption of Rb86, Na22, and Cs137 by bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Improved Tendergreen) was determined at different root temperatures and with and without Ca additions or pretreatments, a strong interaction between temperature and Ca was observed. Ca inhibited Rb86 absorption markedly at low temperatures but had less effect on Cs137. Absorption of Na22 was inhibited by Ca at both low and high temperatures. Little effect for Ca with sometimes a Viets effect was observed at high temperature for Rb but not for Cs or Na. Ratio pairs of Rb, Ca, and Na were used as an index of similarity of absorption mechanisms. Cs and Rb, and Na and Rb appeared to be absorbed by different mechanisms at 10−3 M as indicated by temperature and Ca responses. Nitrate-N stimulated uptake of Rb only at high temperature with or without Ca but not at low temperature. Ca in the pretreatment tended to result in greater long distance transport to shoots of Rb86 and Cs137 for the high temperature but Ca in the test solution slightly decreased the long distance transport. The data are discussed in terms of the Viets effect and of a possible role of Ca in synthesis of transport proteins.  相似文献

Cholest-5-ene-3beta,26-diol, isolated from human brain, was further characterized by oxidation to 3-oxocholest-4-en-26-ol and to 3-oxocholest-4-en-26-oic acid. A linear incremental finite element model is used to analyze the mechanical behavior of the left ventricle. The ventricle is treated as a heterogeneous, non-linearly elastic, isotropic, thick-walled solid of revolution. A new triaxial constitutive relation for the myocardium is presented which exhibits the observed exponential length-passive tension behavior of left ventricular papillary muscle in the limit of uniaxial tension. This triaxial relation contains three parameters: (a) a “small strain” Young's modulus, (b) a Poisson's ratio, and (c) a parameter which characterizes the nonlinear aspect of the elastic behavior of heart muscle. The inner third and outer two-thirds of the ventricular wall are assumed to have small strain Young's moduli of 30 and 60 g/cm2, respectively. The Poisson's ratio is assumed to be equal to 0.49 throughout the ventricular wall. In general, the results of this study indicate that while a linearly elastic model for the ventricle may be adequate in terms of predicting pressure-volume relationships, a linear model may have serious limitations with regard to predicting fiber elongation within the ventricular wall. For example, volumes and midwall equatorial circumferential strains predicted by the linear and nonlinear models considered in this study differ by approximately 20 and 90%, respectively, at a transmural pressure of 12 cm H2O.  相似文献

Daphnia pulex were raised under nine light intensities (0, 1.7, 3.5, 7, 14, 28, 55, and 110 ft-c), polarized light (6.6 ft-c), and four wavelength ranges.Light intensity significantly affected the relationship between filtering rate and body size of unacclimated animals. The b values were lowest at 7 and 14 ft-c and they increased above 7 ft-c as light intensity increased. There were significant differences among b values and adjusted means for unacclimated animals. Acclimation to their respective conditions resulted in some significant differences between b values and adjusted means. For acclimated animals there were no significant differences among b values but there were some differences among adjusted means. The filtering rates of unacclimated and acclimated animals were lower at 14 ft-c while 1.7 and 3.5 ft-c were generally stimulatory and the effect was more pronounced in larger animals. Light intensities above 28 ft-c tended to suppress the filtering rate of small unacclimated animals and stimulate filtering rate in larger unacclimated animals. After acclimation, intensities above 7 ft-c did not affect the filtering rate of either small or large animals.The effect of polarized light on filtering rate was inseparable from the effect of light intensity, however, acclimation to polarized light resulted in a significantly higher b value.There were no significant effects of wavelength among b values for unacclimated animals and the adjusted mean for blue wavelengths was significantly higher than for violet wavelengths. There were no significant differences among b values or adjusted means for acclimated animals. Acclimation to their respective wavelengths did result in some significant differences between b values and adjusted means. Summary Confirmation that the ad-2 locus of yeast controls the carboxylation of aminoimidazole ribonucleotide (AIR) to 5-amino-4-imidazole carboxylate ribonucleotide (CAIR) is provided by the observation that 21 out of a sample of 113 ad-2 mutants were affected by CO2. 19 of the mutants were stimulated by CO2 and 2 were inhibited. The majority of the CO2-stimulated mutants were confined to one section of the complementation map of the ad-2 locus.  相似文献

1. The reaction of several peptides and proteins with diborane was studied under different conditions to determine those most suitable for the specific reduction of carboxyl groups. 2. In the reaction of model peptides and the cyclic peptides bacitracin and tyrocidin, reduction at 0 degrees was entirely specific for the carboxyl groups without affecting the peptide bonds. Acid amide residues were not reduced. Some tripeptides showed anomalous results in that the C-terminal residue was quite resistant to reduction. 3. Specific reduction of carboxyl groups was achieved in each of the following proteins: human serum albumin, egg albumin, adult human haemoglobin, sperm-whale apomyoglobin, horse heart cytochrome c and egg-white lysozyme. The C-terminal amino acid was usually reduced. 4. Conditions for specific reduction of all available carboxyl groups are not easily found and may vary from one substance to another. Specific reduction of a limited number of available carboxyl groups may be generally accomplished by reactions at -10 degrees . 5. It is suggested that this chemical modification, which has the advantage of permanence, may be useful in studying the role of carboxyl groups in the conformation of proteins and in the biological properties of peptides and proteins.  相似文献

During the past two years a pilot project was conducted in which 19 inactive physicians were retrained in preparation for resumption of active practice. The initial program consisted of a flexible training program of six months to one year patterned after conventional internship-residency concepts. During the second year the program was modified by providing an initial condensed indoctrination period of two months'' duration especially designed for this purpose, followed by a preceptorship type of training.The project was considered successful in permitting trainees to enter some form of active medical work, or to enroll in formal specialty training. The observations made by the faculty of the program and its accomplishments are discussed in the light of the effort expended and the cost of the project.  相似文献

The spore and vegetative cell adenylate kinases of Bacillus subtilis, purified about 1,000-fold, proved indistinguishable by several physical and functional tests, including polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, DEAE cellulose chromatography, and specificity toward substrates. Adenylate kinase activity in cell extracts, followed throughout growth and sporulation, was found to reach a maximum near the end of exponential growth, remain at that level during sporulation, until shortly before the appearance of refractile forms, and then decline, along with total protein, during the subsequent maturation of the spores. The enzyme, stable in extracts of exponential growing cells, was unstable in extracts of sporulating cells, presumably as a result of degradation by protease(s) appearing after the end of exponential growth.  相似文献
