Infection of carrot roots by Mycocenlrospora acerina in chill storage (3.5 °C) following inoculation with chlamydospores was studied in 1973–74 and 1974–75. AREAS of intact periderm were only rarely infected, and the high level of periderm resistance predominated over other variables. However, wound infection tended to increase with depth of wound and with increasing age of the plants at harvest. Irrespective of age of root or depth of wound, roots were comparatively resistant to infection at harvest and early in storage, resistance being expressed as a restriction of mycelial growth on the wound surface or localisation of the lesion. Increasing susceptibility with time in storage, depth of wounds, or age at harvest, resulted in larger numbers of inoculated sites becoming infected and a more rapid development from localised to progressive lesions.  相似文献

The adequacy of Elliott Sober’s analogy between classical mechanics and evolutionary theory—according to which both theories explain via a zero-force law and a set of forces that alter the zero-force state—has been criticized from various points of view. I focus here on McShea and Brandon’s claim that drift shouldn’t be considered a force because it is not directional. I argue that there are a number of different theses that could be meant by this, and show that one of those theses—the idea that drift cannot bias populations to be taken somewhere in the evolutionary space from one generation to the next—is actually false. Not only has this thesis been implicitly assumed in the discussion of the force analogy thus far, but it is also commonly found in a wider range of philosophical and biological texts. I argue that correcting this view, and the usual images associated with it, will thereby bring heuristic benefits that impact the force analogy discussion, but that also go beyond it.  相似文献

‘White syndrome’ is considered to be the most prevalent coral disease on the Great Barrier Reef, characterised by rapid rates of lesion progression and high levels of colony mortality. This study investigated the production and translocation of photoassimilates towards white syndrome lesions (WSLs) and artificially inflicted lesions in healthy and diseased colonies of tabular Acropora spp. to determine the intra-colonial response to white syndrome using 14C labelling. Translocation of 14C labelled photoassimilates was preferentially orientated away from active WSLs, with minimal 14C activity observed in the lesion borders, whilst artificial lesions (ALs) created directly opposite WSL borders showed significantly higher 14C activity, suggesting active translocation of photoassimilates for tissue regeneration. Transport of photoassimilates in healthy coral colonies was preferentially oriented towards ALs with a higher perimeter–area ratio, although translocation towards WSL boundaries was minimal even though the lesion perimeter was often the width of the colony (>200 cm). We suggest that the preferential orientation of photoassimilates away from WSLs may represent a deliberate strategy by the colony to induce a ‘shutdown reaction’ in order to preserve intra-colonial resources within areas of the colony that are more likely to survive and recover.  相似文献
