Women's handball is a sport, which has seen an accelerated development over the last decade. Although anthropometric and physical characteristics have been studied for male sports teams, in women's handball, studies are scarce. The aim of this study was twofold: first, to describe the anthropometric characteristics, throwing velocity, hand grip, and muscular power of the lower limbs in female handball players and second, to identify the possible differences in these parameters in terms of individual playing positions (center, back, wing, pivot, and goalkeeper). A total of 130 elite female Spanish handball players participated in the study (age 25.74 ± 4.84 years; playing experience 14.92 ± 4.88 years). Anthropometric assessment was performed for all the subjects following the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry protocols. Furthermore, all the subjects performed a vertical jump test (squat jump and countermovement jump). Hand grip and throwing velocity in several situations were also assessed. A 1-way analysis of variance and a Tukey post hoc test were used to study the differences among individual playing positions. Wings were less heavy, shorter, and showed a smaller arm span than did goalkeepers, backs and pivots (p ≤ 0.001). Additionally, pivots were heavier than centers. Backs and pivots exhibited higher muscular mass than did wings. Total players' somatotype was mesomorphy endomorphy (3.89-4.28-2.29). Centers showed higher throwing velocity levels than did wings in 9-m throws from just behind the line, with a goalkeeper. Backs exhibited higher hand-grip values than did wings. Statistical differences have been established between wings and other specific playing positions, especially with pivot and backs. Coaches can use this information to select players for the different specific positions.  相似文献

Drought and waterlogging are important abiotic stresses negatively affecting plant growth and development. They are transiently recurring in rainfed lowlands and in water-saving system practicing intermittent irrigation. This study aimed to determine the contribution of plastic development and associated physiological responses of roots to shoot dry matter production under transient soil moisture stresses. To minimize effect of genetic confounding, a selected line (CSSL47) drawn from 54 chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSL) of Nipponbare (japonica type) carrying an overlapping chromosome segments of Kasalath (indica type), was used and compared with the recurrent parent Nipponbare. Under transient droughted-to-waterlogged (D–W) conditions, CSSL47 showed greater shoot dry matter production than Nipponbare. This was due largely to its greater root system development through high induction of aerenchyma formation. Consequently, aerenchyma development effectively facilitated the internal diffusion of oxygen (O2) to the root tips under sudden waterlogged condition supporting rapid recovery of stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. Likewise, CSSL47 showed greater shoot dry matter production than Nipponbare under transient waterlogged-to-droughted (W–D) conditions. This was due to CSSL47’s greater root system development through more initiation of L type lateral roots that effectively maintained soil water uptake. This in turn sustained higher stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. Results implied that utilization of CSSLs could precisely reveal that root plastic development in response to transient soil moisture stresses contributed to the maintenance of shoot dry matter production.  相似文献

Zygomycosis encompasses infections due to two distinct orders of fungi, Mucorales and Entomophthorales. With rare exception, Entomophthorales are restricted to tropical areas. By contrast, mucorales are ubiquitous opportunistic fungi, which play a crucial part in the natural decay process. In human pathology, they may be opportunistic agents and be responsible for rare infection called (Mucormycosis) zygomycosis. We report two cases of zygomycosis from Madhya Pradesh, Central India, one caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a diabetic patient and another caused by Rhizopus microsporus in an apparently healthy patient. The cases were diagnosed by direct microscopy, histopathological examination and culture. Both the patients were successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B. Rhizopus microsporus is, for the first time reported from Madhya Pradesh, India, causing rhino-maxillary orbital zygomycosis.  相似文献

Viral gene therapy has exceptional potential as a specifically tailored cancer treatment. However, enthusiasm for cancer gene therapy has varied over the years, partly owing to safety concerns after the death of a young volunteer in a clinical trial for a genetic disease. Since this singular tragedy, results from numerous clinical trials over the past 10 years have restored the excellent safety profile of adenoviral vectors. These vectors have been extensively studied in phase I and II trials as intraprostatically administered agents for patients with locally recurrent and high-risk local prostate cancer. Promising therapeutic responses have been reported in several studies with both oncolytic and suicide gene therapy strategies. The additional benefit of combining gene therapy with radiation therapy has also been realized; replicating adenoviruses inhibit DNA repair pathways, resulting in a synergistic sensitization to radiation. Other, nonreplicating suicide gene therapy strategies are also significantly enhanced with radiation. Combined radiation/gene therapy is currently being studied in phase I and II clinical trials and will likely be the first adenoviral gene therapy mechanism to become available to urologists in the clinic. Systemic gene therapy for metastatic disease is also a major goal of the field, and clinical trials are currently under way for hormone-resistant metastatic prostate cancer. Second- and third-generation "re-targeted" viral vectors, currently being developed in the laboratory, are likely to further improve these systemic trials.  相似文献

An approach combining morphological profiling and flow cytometric analysis was used to assess genetic stability during the several steps of somatic embryogenesis in Pinus pinaster. Embryogenic cell lines of P. pinaster were established from immature zygotic embryos excised from seeds obtained from open-pollinated trees. During the maturation stage, phenotype of somatic embryos was characterized as being either normal or abnormal. Based upon the prevalent morphological traits, different types of abnormal embryos underwent further classification and quantification. Nuclear DNA content of maritime pine using the zygotic embryos was estimated to be 57.04 pg/2C, using propidium iodide flow cytometry. According to the same methodology, no significant differences (P ≤ 0.01) in DNA ploidy were detected among the most frequently observed abnormal phenotypes, embryogenic cell lines, zygotic and normal somatic embryos, and somatic embryogenesis-derived plantlets. Although the differences in DNA ploidy level do not exclude the occurrence of a low level of aneuploidy, the results obtained point to the absence of major changes in ploidy level during the somatic embryogenesis process of this economically important species. Therefore, our primary goal of true-to-typeness was assured at this level.  相似文献

We previously reported that endothelins (ETs) are involved in the rat central and peripheral regulation of bile secretion. In this study we sought to establish whether ET-1 and ET-3 modulated submandibular gland secretion when locally or centrally applied. Animals were prepared with gland duct cannulation to collect saliva samples and jugular cannulation to administer sialogogues. ETs were given either into the submandibular gland or brain lateral ventricle. Intraglandularly administered ETs failed to elicit salivation per se. However, ET-1, but not ET-3, potentiated both cholinergic- and adrenergic-evoked salivation through ET(A) receptors. ET-1 decreased cAMP content but increased phosphoinositide hydrolysis, whereas ET-3 attenuated both intracellular pathways. The expression of ET(A) and ET(B) receptor mRNAs as well as that of ETs was revealed in the submandibular gland by RT-PCR. Immunohistochemical studies showed that ET(A) receptor staining was localized around the interlobular ducts and acini, compatible with the myoepithelial cells' location, whereas ET(B) receptor staining was restricted to small blood vessels. When applied to the brain, both ETs induced no salivation but enhanced cholinergic- and adrenergic-evoked salivary secretion through parasympathetic pathways. ET-1 response was mediated by brain ET(A) receptors, whereas that of ET-3 was presumably through nonconventional ET receptors. Present findings show that ETs are involved in the brain regulation of cholinergic- and adrenergic-stimulated submandibular gland secretion through the activation of distinct brain ET receptors and parasympathetic pathways. However, when ETs were administered into the gland, only ET-1 enhanced cholinergic and adrenergic salivation likely through myopithelial cell contraction by activating ET(A) receptors coupled to phospholipase C. The presence of ETs and ET receptors suggests the existence of an endothelinergic system in the submandibular gland.  相似文献

We have investigated the influence of the free radical initiator characteristics on red blood cell lipid peroxidation, membrane protein modification, and haemoglobin oxidation. 2,2'-Azobis(2-amidinopropane) (AAPH) and 4,4'-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) (ACV) were employed as free radical sources. Both azo-compounds are water-soluble, although ACV presents a lowed hydrophilicity, as evaluated from octanol/water partition constants. At physiological pH, they are a di-cation and a di-anion, respectively.

AAPH and ACV readily oxidise purified oxyhemoglobin in a very efficient free radical-mediated process, particularly for ACV-derived radicals, where nearly one heme moiety was modified per radical introduced into the system, suggesting that negatively charged radicals react preferentially at the heme group. The radicals derived from both azo-compounds lead to different oxidation products. Methemoglobin, hemichromes and choleglobin were produced in AAPH-promoted hemoglobin oxidation, while ACV-derived radicals predominantly form hemichromes, with very low production of choleglobin.

Red cell damage was evaluated at the level of hemoglobin and membrane constituents modification, and was expressed in terms of free radical doses. Before the onset of the lytic process, ACV leads to more lipid peroxidation than AAPH, and induces a moderate oxidation of intracellular Hb. This intracellular oxidation is markedly increased if ACV hydrophilicity is decreased by lowering the pH. On the other hand, AAPH-derived radicals are considerable more efficient in promoting protein band 3 modification and cell lysis, without significant intracellular hemoglobin oxidation. These results show that the lytic process is not triggered by lipid peroxidation or hemichrome formation, and suggest that membrane protein modification is the relevant factor leading to red blood cell lysis.  相似文献

The genomic clone RG64, which is tightly linked to the blast resistance gene Pi-2(t) in rice, provides means to perform marker-aided selection in a rice breeding program. The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of generating a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based polymorphic marker that can distinguish the blast resistant gene, Pi-2(t), and susceptible genotypes within cultivated rice. RG64 was sequenced, and the sequence data was used to design pairs of specific primers for (PCR) amplification of genomic DNA from rice varieties differing in their blast disease responsiveness. The amplified products, known as sequenced-tagged-sites (STSs), were not polymorphic between the three varieties examined. However, cleavage of the amplified products with the restriction enzyme HaeIII generated a polymorphic fragment, known as specific amplicon polymorphism (SAP), between the resistant and the susceptible genotypes. To examine the power of the identified SAP marker in predicting the genotype of the Pi-2 (t) locus, we determined the genotypes of the F2 individuals at this locus by performing progeny testing for the disease response in the F3 generation. The results indicated an accuracy of more than 95% in identifying the resistant plants, which was similar to that using RG64 as the hybridization probe. The identification of the resistant homozygous plants increased to 100% when the markers flanking the genes were considered simultaneously. These results demonstrate the utility of SAP markers as simple and yet reliable landmarks for use in marker-assisted selection and breeding within cultivated rice.  相似文献

The basic genomic defect in Wolf–Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS), including isolated 4p deletions and various unbalanced de novo 4p;autosomal translocations and above all t(4p;8p), is heterogeneous. Olfactory receptor gene clusters (ORs) on 4p were demonstrated to mediate a group of WHS-associated t(4p;8p)dn translocations. The breakpoint of a 4-Mb isolated deletion was also recently reported to fall within the most distal OR. However, it is still unknown whether ORs mediate all 4p-autosomal translocations, or whether they are involved in the origin of isolated 4p deletions. Another unanswered question is whether a parental inversion polymorphism on 4p16 can act as predisposing factor in the origin of WHS-associated rearrangements. We investigated the involvement of the ORs in the origin of 73 WHS-associated rearrangements. No hotspots for rearrangements were detected. Breakpoints on 4p occurred within the proximal or the distal olfactory receptor gene cluster in 8 of 73 rearrangements (11%). These were five t(4p;8p) translocations, one t(4p;7p) translocation and two isolated terminal deletions. ORs were not involved in one additional t(4p;8p) translocation, in a total of nine different 4p;autosomal translocations and in the majority of isolated deletions. The presence of a parental inversion polymorphism on 4p was investigated in 30 families in which the 4p rearrangements, all de novo, were tested for parental origin (7 were maternal and 23 paternal). It was detected only in the mothers of 3 t(4p;8p) cases. We conclude that WHS-associated chromosome changes are not usually mediated by low copy repeats. The 4p16.3 inversion polymorphism is not a risk factor for their origin.   • Investigating spatial variation in the relative importance of sexual reproduction and clonal propagation is critical to obtain more accurate estimates of future effective population sizes and genetic diversity, as well as to identify ecological correlates of clonality.
  • We combined a stratified sampling scheme with microsatellite genetic analyses to estimate variation in the proportion of sexual versus clonal recruits among saplings in five populations of the tree Pyrus bourgaeana. Using a likelihood framework, we identified clones among the genotypes analysed and examined variation among populations regarding the proportion of saplings coming from clonal propagation. We also examined the relationship between the relative abundance of clonal shoots across the studied populations and their herbivory levels.
  • Our results revealed that one third of the saplings examined (N = 225 saplings) had a probability above 0.9 of being clones of nearby (<10 m) trees, with the ratio between clonal propagation and sexual recruitment varying up to eight‐fold among populations. A small portion of these putative clonal shoots reached sexual maturity. Relative abundance of clonal shoots did not significantly relate to the herbivory by ungulates.
  • Our results call into question optimistic expectations of previous studies reporting sufficient levels of recruitment under parental trees without animal seed dispersal services. Nevertheless, given that some of these clonal shoots reach sexual maturity, clonal propagation can ultimately facilitate the long‐term persistence of populations during adverse periods (e.g. environmental stress, impoverished pollinator communities, seed dispersal limitation).
