We examined the distribution, abundance and density of the kelp gull, at Admiralty Bay during three austral summers from 2002/03 to 2004/05 and compared our results with previously published data. All ice free areas within the bay were surveyed, and nests were individually marked with a hand-held GPS receiver and subsequently plotted on a geographical chart using ArcView (ESRI 2001). Statistical analysis demonstrated that the means are similar for all time periods, suggesting that the population of kelp gulls has remained unchanged in Admiralty Bay since summer of 1978/79 (Jablonski 1986). 相似文献

This work is concerned with a reaction-diffusion system that has been proposed as a model to describe acid-mediated cancer invasion. More precisely, we consider the properties of travelling waves that can be supported by such a system, and show that a rich variety of wave propagation dynamics, both fast and slow, is compatible with the model. Costs and benefits of freezing behaviour in the harvestman Eumesosoma roeweri (Arachnida, Opiliones)

Animals present an enormous variety of behavioural defensive mechanisms, which increase their survival, but often at a cost. Several animal taxa reduce their chances of being detected and/or recognized as prey items by freezing (remaining completely motionless) in the presence of a predator. We studied costs and benefits of freezing in immature Eumesosoma roeweri (Opiliones, Sclerosomatidae). Preliminary observations showed that these individuals often freeze in the presence of the syntopic predatory spider Schizocosa ocreata (Araneae, Lycosidae). We verified that harvestmen paired with predators spent more time freezing than when alone or when paired with a conspecific. Then, we determined that predator chemical cues alone did not elicit freezing behaviour. Next, we examined predator behaviour towards moving/non-moving prey and found that spiders attacked moving prey significantly more, suggesting an advantage of freezing in the presence of a predator. Finally, as measure of the foraging costs of freezing, we found that individuals paired with a predator for 2 h gained significantly less weight than individuals paired with a conspecific or left alone. Taken together, our results suggest that freezing may protect E. roeweri harvestmen from predatory attacks by wolf spiders, but at the cost of reduced food and/or water intake. 相似文献

Although foraging comprises a set of behaviours that typically vary with resource availability and/or climatic conditions, few studies have analysed how foraging, particularly food hoarding, varies across populations inhabiting different habitats. We carried out an inter-population study on foraging behaviour with the caviomorph rodent Octodon degus collected from two geographically separated populations in central Chile, with contrasting climates. One population was located in a mountainous zone (at 2600 m elevation) characterized by a high-altitude climate. The other population was from a low-altitude Mediterranean climate zone (450 m elevation). Under laboratory conditions, we measured population-specific differences in food consumption and hoarding by recording food utilization. We also assessed whether acclimation played a role in behavioural differences, by using two different sets of animals that had been in captivity for (1) 2 wk or (2) 6 mo, under common conditions. The results showed variation in food hoarding between populations. Individuals from the low-altitude population exclusively displayed scatter hoarding behaviour. In contrast, high-altitude animals carried out larder hoarding combined with scatter hoarding (37.4% and 62.6% respectively). There was no intra-population variation between degus with different acclimation periods under captivity, thus inter-population differences in larder hoarding were maintained despite 6 mo of acclimation to a common environment. The geographic variation observed suggests that larder hoarding is favoured under harsher environmental conditions. We discuss some probable causes for this variation. The lack of effect of acclimation suggests that inter-population differences in larder hoarding might be the result of local adaptation or, less likely, it corresponds to an ontogenetically acquired irreversible behaviour. 相似文献

Most quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies fail to account for the effect that the maternal genotype may have on an individual’s
phenotypes, even though maternal effect QTL have been shown to account for considerable variation in growth and obesity traits
in mouse models. Moreover, the fetal programming theory suggests that maternal effects influence an offspring’s adult fitness,
although the genetic nature of fetal programming remains unclear. Within this context, our study focused on mapping genomic
regions associated with maternal effect QTL by analyzing the phenotypes of chromosomes 2 and 7 subcongenic mice from genetically
distinct dams. We analyzed 12 chromosome 2 subcongenic strains that spanned from 70 to 180 Mb with CAST/EiJ donor regions
on the background of C57BL/6 J, and 14 chromosome 7 subcongenic strains that spanned from 81 to 111 Mb with BALB/cByJ donor
regions on C57BL/6ByJ background. Maternal QTL analyses were performed on the basis of overlapping donor regions between subcongenic
strains. We identified several highly significant (P < 5 × 10−4) maternal QTL influencing total body weight, organ weight, and fat pad weights in both sets of subcongenics. These QTL accounted
for 1.9-11.7% of the phenotypic variance for growth and obesity and greatly narrowed the genomic regions associated with the
maternal genetic effects. These maternal effect QTL controlled phenotypic traits in adult mice, suggesting that maternal influences
at early stages of development may permanently affect offspring performance. Identification of maternal effects in our survey
of two sets of subcongenic strains, representing approximately 5% of the mouse genome, supports the hypothesis that maternal

The application of Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) to the detection and characterization of phase separation in lipid bilayers (both in model systems and in cell membranes) is reviewed. Models describing the rate and efficiency of FRET for both uniform probe distribution and phase separation, and recently reported methods for detection of membrane heterogeneity and determination of phase boundaries, probe partition coefficients and domain size, are presented and critically discussed. Selected recent applications of FRET to one-phase lipid systems, gel/fluid phase separation, liquid ordered/liquid disordered phase separation (lipid rafts), complex systems containing ceramide and cell membranes are presented to illustrate the wealth of information that can be inferred from carefully designed FRET studies of membrane domains. 相似文献

A vanadyl complex with the ligand (bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)methyl)(2-(pyridyl-2-yl)ethyl)amine was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analyses, cyclic voltammetry and infrared, electronic and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. This compound was designed under the so called hybrid concept. The structure of the contact network between individuals has a profound effect on the transmission of infectious disease. Using a novel technology – proximity sensing radio collars – we described the contact network in a population of Tasmanian devils. This largest surviving marsupial carnivore is threatened by a novel infectious cancer. All devils were connected in a single giant component, which would permit disease to spread throughout the network from any single infected individual. Unlike the contact networks for many human diseases, the degree distribution was not highly aggregated. Nevertheless, the empirically derived networks differed from random networks. Contact networks differed between the mating and non-mating seasons, with more extended male–female associations in the mating season and a greater frequency of female–female associations outside the mating season. Our results suggest that there is limited potential to control the disease by targeting highly connected age or sex classes. 相似文献

As sessile organisms, plants must cope with multiple and combined variations of signals in their environment. However, very few reports have studied the genome-wide effects of systematic signal combinations on gene expression. Here, we evaluate a high level of signal integration, by modeling genome-wide expression patterns under a factorial combination of carbon (C), light (L), and nitrogen (N) as binary factors in two organs (O), roots and leaves. Signal management is different between C, N, and L and in shoots and roots. For example, L is the major factor controlling gene expression in leaves. However, in roots there is no obvious prominent signal, and signal interaction is stronger. The major signal interaction events detected genome wide in Arabidopsis roots are deciphered and summarized in a comprehensive conceptual model. Surprisingly, global analysis of gene expression in response to C, N, L, and O revealed that the number of genes controlled by a signal is proportional to the magnitude of the gene expression changes elicited by the signal. These results uncovered a strong constraining structure in plant cell signaling pathways, which prompted us to propose the existence of a “code” of signal integration. 相似文献
