The ability of animals to find and consume hoarded seeds (i.e. seed recovery) is a key stage within the seed dispersal process. However, the ecology of seed recovery is still poorly understood. Here, we analyze the factors controlling seed recovery by scatter‐hoarding rodents in an oak‐dominated temperate forest. We examined the relative importance of intrinsic seed traits (i.e. plant‐driven) and extrinsic seed factors (i.e. animal‐driven) on the probability of seed recovery. We found that seed recovery is mainly driven by extrinsic seed factors, mostly related to animal behavior (pilfering frequency, microsite preference, predation risk, burial depth and cache size). Important intrinsic traits such as seed size, seed quality and seed‐drop timing were, on average, of lower significance in the probability of seed recovery (2.8‐times less important than extrinsic factors); only seed quality was an important intrinsic trait. On the other hand, larger and nutritionally more valuable seeds showed a removal–recovery tradeoff as they enhance seed removal and hoarding (increasing dispersal quality) but also favour seed recovery (increasing predation). We find that other mechanisms beyond seed traits (e.g. masting) are needed to decrease seed recovery and, thus, increase seed survival. We conclude that, as seed recovery is mostly driven by animal behavioural factors, it substantially differs from other previous stages of the seed dispersal process that are more dependent on seed traits. We argue that seed recovery needs further attention to advance our understanding of the ecology of seed dispersal and the role of secondary dispersers as a selective force for seeds.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism (SD) has evolved in response to selection pressures that differ between sexes. Since such pressures change across an individual's life, SD may vary within age classes. Yet, little is known about how selection on early phenotypes may drive the final SD observed in adults. In many dimorphic species, juveniles resemble adult females rather than adult males, meaning that out of the selective pressures established by sexual selection feminized phenotypes may be adaptive. If true, fitness benefits of early female‐like phenotypes may constrain the expression of male phenotypes in adulthood. Using the common kestrel Falco tinnunculus as a study model, we evaluated the fitness advantages of expressing more feminized phenotypes at youth. Although more similar to adult females than to adult males, common kestrel fledglings are still sexually dimorphic in size and coloration. Integrating morphological and chromatic variables, we analysed the phenotypic divergence between sexes as a measure of how much each individual looks like the sex to which it belongs (phenotypic sexual resemblance, PSR). We then tested the fitness benefits associated with PSR by means of the probability of recruitment in the population. We found a significant interaction between PSR and sex, showing that in both sexes more feminized phenotypes recruited more into the population than less feminized phenotypes. Moreover, males showed lower PSR than females and a higher proportion of incorrect sex classifications. These findings suggest that the mechanisms in males devoted to resembling female phenotypes in youth, due to a trend to increase fitness through more feminized phenotypes, may provide a mechanism to constrain the SD in adulthood.  相似文献

Sex differences in range size and navigation are widely reported, with males traveling farther than females, being less spatially anxious, and in many studies navigating more effectively. One explanation holds that these differences are the result of sexual selection, with larger ranges conferring mating benefits on males, while another explanation focuses on greater parenting costs that large ranges impose on reproductive-aged females. We evaluated these arguments with data from a community of highly monogamous Maya farmers. Maya men and women do not differ in distance traveled over the region during the mate-seeking years, suggesting that mating competition does not affect range size in this monogamous population. However, men’s regional and daily travel increases after marriage, apparently in pursuit of resources that benefit families, whereas women reduce their daily travel after marriage. This suggests that parental effort is more important than mating effort in this population. Despite the relatively modest overall sex difference in mobility, Maya men were less spatially anxious than women, thought themselves to be better navigators, and pointed more accurately to distant locations. A structural equation model showed that the sex by marital status interaction had a direct effect on mobility, with a weaker indirect effect of sex on mobility mediated by navigational ability.  相似文献

Background

Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) is a type of ultrasound therapy, in which low frequency moderate power ultrasound is combined with microbubbles to trigger cavitation. Cavitation is the process of oscillation of gas bubbles causing biophysical effects such as pushing and pulling or shock waves that permeabilize biological barriers. In vivo, cavitation results in tissue permeabilization and is used to enable local delivery of nanomedicine. While cavitation can occur in biological liquids when high pressure ultrasound is applied, the use of microbubbles as cavitation nuclei in UTMD largely facilitates the induction of cavitation. UTMD is intensively studied for drug delivery into tumor tissue, but also for the activation of anti-tumor immune responses. The first clinical studies of UTMD-mediated chemotherapy delivery confirmed safety and efficacy of this approach.

Background

Ultrasound plays an important role in cancer diagnosis. B-mode imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasound are routinely used to detect cancerous lesions in breast and liver. The use of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) such as microbubbles (MBs), which can be functionalized with targeting ligands, has further enabled ultrasound molecular imaging (USMI) of specific molecular markers in pre-clinical and the first clinical studies. As targeted MBs have a diameter of 1–4 μm, they are limited to the blood vasculature upon intravenous injection, and can bind to markers of the vascular endothelium. USMI with targeted MBs was applied for imaging of markers of inflammation, angiogenesis, and the tumor endothelium.

Aim

The present review provides an introduction to USMI and presents currently available UCAs, targeting strategies, pre-clinical targets, proposed applications, and the first clinical studies with USMI to guide novel users and assess the technique's potential for clinical use.  相似文献

Dioecy, the segregation of male and female structures among individuals, is widespread in tropical plants, encompassing 10–30 percent of species in some sites. In many cases, interindividual sex separation is not complete, as individual plants, although nominally dioecious, may produce both types of reproductive structures. A common form of this sexual variation is the production of female structures in otherwise male individuals, commonly referred to as fruiting males. Here we report the existence of fruiting males in the dioecious tropical tree Jacaratia mexicana (Caricaceae). We show that fruiting males can constitute up to 45 percent of all males in some populations of a tropical forest in Southern Mexico. In order to determine the functional significance of fruiting males for the breeding system of J. mexicana , we compared the relative performance of male- and female-borne seeds. Our results show that seeds from fruiting males are three times less likely to germinate and survive than seeds from female trees. Based on relative seed fitness data, and sex ratios in natural populations, we estimate that 6–15 percent of the genes contributed by fruiting males to the next generation are transmitted via ovules, meaning that morphological variation in gender is at least partially accompanied by functional gender variation. Finally, our seed fitness estimates for fruiting males suggest that fruiting males will not replace female plants in natural populations.

The rice nucleotide-binding (NB) and leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domain immune receptors (NLRs) RGA4 and RGA5 form a helper NLR/sensor NLR (hNLR/sNLR) pair that specifically recognizes the effectors AVR-Pia and AVR1-CO39 from the blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. While RGA4 contains only canonical NLR domains, RGA5 has an additional unconventional heavy metal-associated (HMA) domain integrated after its LRR domain. This RGA5HMA domain binds the effectors and is crucial for their recognition. Investigation of the three-dimensional structure of the AVR1-CO39/RGA5HMA complex by X-ray crystallography identified a candidate surface for effector binding in the HMA domain and showed that the HMA domain self-interacts in the absence of effector through the same surface. Here, we investigated the relevance of this HMA homodimerization for RGA5 function and the role of the RGA5HMA effector-binding and self-interaction surface in effector recognition. By analysing structure-informed point mutations in the RGA5HMA-binding surface in protein interaction studies and in Nicotiana benthamiana cell death assays, we found that HMA self-interaction does not contribute to RGA5 function. However, the effector-binding surface of RGA5HMA identified by X-ray crystallography is crucial for both in vitro and in vivo effector binding as well as effector recognition. These results support the current hypothesis that noncanonical integrated domains of NLRs act primarily as effector traps and deepen our understanding of the sNLRs' function within NLR pairs.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that melanin‐based traits play a crucial role in social contexts as they are associated with dominance, personality and social behaviour. However, most of these studies have focused on adults, and the role of these traits in juveniles has rarely been explored. Here, we explore the association between two melanin‐based traits and nestling personality in Common Kestrels Falco tinnunculus. Our results show that female nestlings with blacker plumages displayed bolder personalities, providing evidence of sex‐dependent phenotypic integration of these two traits in males and females. We consider that this differential integration may arise from different selection pressures acting on males and females on plumage coloration during adulthood and that nestling coloration can act as a status signal within the juvenile age‐class.  相似文献

We introduce a computational toolset, named GROmaρs, to obtain and compare time-averaged density maps from molecular dynamics simulations. GROmaρs efficiently computes density maps by fast multi-Gaussian spreading of atomic densities onto a three-dimensional grid. It complements existing map-based tools by enabling spatial inspection of atomic average localization during the simulations. Most importantly, it allows the comparison between computed and reference maps (e.g., experimental) through calculation of difference maps and local and time-resolved global correlation. These comparison operations proved useful to quantitatively contrast perturbed and control simulation data sets and to examine how much biomolecular systems resemble both synthetic and experimental density maps. This was especially advantageous for multimolecule systems in which standard comparisons like RMSDs are difficult to compute. In addition, GROmaρs incorporates absolute and relative spatial free-energy estimates to provide an energetic picture of atomistic localization. This is an open-source GROMACS-based toolset, thus allowing for static or dynamic selection of atoms or even coarse-grained beads for the density calculation. Furthermore, masking of regions was implemented to speed up calculations and to facilitate the comparison with experimental maps. Beyond map comparison, GROmaρs provides a straightforward method to detect solvent cavities and average charge distribution in biomolecular systems. We employed all these functionalities to inspect the localization of lipid and water molecules in aquaporin systems, the binding of cholesterol to the G protein coupled chemokine receptor type 4, and the identification of permeation pathways through the dermicidin antimicrobial channel. Based on these examples, we anticipate a high applicability of GROmaρs for the analysis of molecular dynamics simulations and their comparison with experimentally determined densities.  相似文献
