Changes in chemical and surface characteristics of Brazil Nut shells (Bertholletia excelsa) due to pyrolysis at different temperatures (350 degrees C, 600 degrees C, 850 degrees C) were examined. For this purpose, proximate and ultimate analyses, physical adsorption measurements of N2 (-196 degrees C) and CO, (25 degrees C) as well as samples visualisation by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) were performed. Appreciable differences in the residue characteristics, depending markedly on the pyrolysis temperature, were observed. Release of volatile matter led to the development of pores of different sizes. Progressive increases in micropore development with increasing pyrolysis temperature took place, whereas a maximum development of larger pores occurred at 600 degrees C. Furthermore, kinetics measurements of Brazil Nut shells pyrolysis from ambient temperature up to 900 degrees C were performed by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis. A model taking into account the significant changes in the residue during pyrolysis, through an increase in the activation energy with temperature and solid conversion, were found to properly fit the kinetics data over the wide range of degradation investigated.  相似文献

Saproxylic beetles may act as bio-indicators of high-quality mature woodlands, and their conservation is strongly linked to the quality and quantity of deadwood in a biotope. We tested the effect of deadwood accumulation and habitat variables on saproxylic species richness by investigating six sampling sites under different deadwood management practices that belong to both alluvial and riparian mixed forests of the Po plain, Italy. We sampled 43 obligate saproxylic species. The main factor predicting saproxylic species richness was the amount of deadwood measured by both log diameter and volume. We found a threshold of 0.22 m diameter (confidence interval CI 0.18–0.37 m) and 32.04 m3/ha volume (CI 16.09–64.09 m3/ha) below which saproxylic beetle richness would be significantly reduced and a threshold of 35 m3/ha dead wood volume (CI 33–40 m3/ha) over which species richness increases by <5 %. The other deadwood and environmental components influenced saproxylic beetle richness to a lesser extent; some of them, however, should still be considered for proper management. Forest structure variables describing forest density such as large trees and basal areas have a negative effect on species richness. According to the results of our study, stumps and advanced decaying class are positively correlated, while small logs are negatively correlated to species richness. Thus, in extensively managed forests, the regular cutting of trees should be implemented to create artificial stumps, in order to assure a continuity of deadwood and, in the meantime, increase the number and width of openings in the forest. Moreover, prolonging rotation times can assure the presence of deadwood at intermediate/later stages of decay.  相似文献

The effects of impaired carotenogenesis on plastid membrane organization, functionality and stability were studied in etiolated barley plants grown at 20 and 30°C. The plants were treated with norflurazon or amitrole, two herbicides affecting phytoene desaturation and lycopene cyclization, respectively. At 20°C, the amitrole-treated etioplasts, which accumulated lycopene in their inner membranes, exhibited disorganized prolamellar bodies, containing a prevalent form of non-phototransformable protochlorophyllide (Pchlide). They also showed a certain difficulty in reducing the phototransformable pigment to chlorophyllide when exposed to light, and were unable to reform the active ternary complex [protochlorophyllide–oxidoreductase (POR)–Pchlide–NADPH] when placed back in darkness. No ultrastructural alterations were found in norflurazon-treated etioplasts, with carotenogenesis inhibited at the phytoene desaturation step. In these latter organelles, Pchlide, whose forms were comparable with those of the control etioplasts, was photoreduced quickly after illumination and the ternary complex was reformed during a subsequent dark period. Thus, the impaired carotenogenesis leading to the accumulation of lycopene showed greater interference with the etioplast membrane arrangement and functionality than did the earlier interruption of the biosynthetic pathway at the phytoene level. This might be due to the different interactions of the distinct carotenoid precursors with other membrane components. However, in etioplasts of norflurazon-treated plants, a rise in growth temperature caused a partial demolition of prolamellar bodies, showing a lowered thermostability of the carotenoid-deficient membranes. This latter effect strengthens the concept that a correct and complete carotenogenesis pathway, leading to the synthesis of polar carotenoids (i.e. xanthophylls), is required for the maintenance of stable plastid membranes.  相似文献

Recent years have seen several advances in our understanding of the functions of adipose tissue regarding not only the energy storage, but also the regulation of complex metabolic and endocrine functions. In this context, leptin and adiponectin, the two most abundant adipocyte products, represent one of the best example of adipocytokines involved in the control of energy expenditure, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism as well as in the regulation of immune responses. Leptin and adiponectin secretion is counter-regulated in vivo, in relation to degree of adiposity, since plasma leptin concentrations are significantly elevated in obese subjects in proportion to body mass index while adiponectin secretion decreases in relation to the amount of adipose tissue. In this review we focus on the main biological activities of leptin and adiponectin on the lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and on their contribute in regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses.  相似文献

In most vertebrates, the regenerative capacity to restore lost/damage tissues to original structure and functionality decreases at some time during ontogenesis. To evaluate the role of the acquired immunity in the decline of regenerative potential, we examined the cellular responses elicited in the spleen during skin repair in Xenopus adults. Modifications in the architecture were found to be induced and were remarkable 14 days postinjury when the spleen increased significantly in size. In white pulp, the periarteriolar lymphoid sheaths were associated with follicles having central light zones, morphologically similar to germinal centers. With the progress of healing, pigment‐containing cells were seen to accumulate in both white and red pulp regions. Moreover, compared to controls, the cells immunoreactive to anti‐cytokines (TNF‐α, TGF‐β1) and ‐iNOS increased from the first days after wounding. The 14th day, the positive cells formed a dense network of reticular cells in central regions of lymphoid follicles and more frequent reactive leukocytes were detected within the red pulp. A higher number of lymphoid cells immunostained with anti‐CD3ε were also observed in the perifollicular zone. The results suggest that the spleen of adult frogs is involved in skin wound healing with the expansion of lymphoid compartments. J. Studies at the root level and how the root–shoot interactions may influence the whole crop performance of giant reed (Arundo donax L.) under limited water conditions are largely missing. In the present study, we illustrate the effects of water stress on some phenotypic traits at the root–shoot levels of two giant reed genotypes (from Morocco and Northern Italy) that were reported to have different adaptive hydraulic stem conductivities despite the limited genetic variability of the species. The trial was carried out in 1 m3 rhizotrons (1 × 1 × 1 m) for two consecutive growing seasons. As expected, both genotypes showed an effective behavior to contrast water shortage; however, the Moroccan genotype showed a higher leaf water potential, a lower root length density (RLD) and thinner roots in the upper soil layer (0–20 cm), and similar to control RLD values at deep soil layers (40–60 cm). On the other hand the Italian genotype showed the opposite pattern; that is no drought (DR) effects in RLD and root diameter at upper soil layers and reduced RLD in deep layers, thus revealing different DR adaptation characteristics between two genotypes. This DR adaptation variability might bring new insights on DR tolerance of giant reed identifying potential traits aimed to improve the integral plant functioning, to a more efficient use of water resources, and to a more effective crop allocation to targeted stressful conditions under a climate change scenario that foresees the increase of DR periods.  相似文献
