1. Salix lapponum host plants at an upper altitudinal site differed significantly in size, structural density, phenology, growth performance, and spatial isolation from those growing at a lower site. 2. Plant differences were paralleled by significant differences in psyllid population density and phenology parameters, with psyllid population density, percentage of catkins occupied, and phenological development relatively lower or retarded at the upper site. Population densities at the upper site, nevertheless, remained high. 3. Plant measurements were good predictors of insect density, often explaining up to 73% of the variance in abundance among plants at a given site. 4. Sets of four plant characters identified by best subsets regression were better predictors of psyllid density and development than single factors, although differences were often not great and the combinations of characters selected by multiple regression sometimes differed from the best single predictors. 5. Best single predictors of psyllid density on catkins were measurements of plant size, particularly height, length, and basal stem diameter. Shoot density and catkin phenology were occasionally important but plant isolation and prior growth performance were less important. 6. By contrast with density, age structure of the psyllid population was predicted best from plant phenological measurements, notably catkin phenology.  相似文献

The microdistribution of a beach plant, Cakile maritima, was examined relative to patches of an introduced beachgrass, Ammophila arenaria. Sampling was done with belt transects oriented parallel to the beachfront to minimize the influence of physical factors along the land/sea gradient. No Cakile individuals were found within Ammophila patches, and a 3–4 m wide zone of decreased abundance occurred outside of patch borders. I hypothesized that this microdistribution was due to foraging behavior of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, which nest in Ammophila patches and forage outward from them. Manipulative experiments using fruits and seedlings of Cakile confirmed that herbivory was higher inside patches and in border areas. Seedlings protected from herbivory by wire cages survived and grew equally well both inside and outside of Ammophila patches, demonstrating that differences in other habitat factors were not of major importance in determining Cakile microdistribution. Herbivory by mice was concluded to be of primary importance in determining the microdistribution of Cakile relative to Ammophila. Rodent herbivory may influence microdistributions of beach plants along the land/sea gradient, and may also be partly responsible for decreased plant species richness often observed in Ammophila-dominated areas on the West Coast.  相似文献

Anatomical features of Eriastrum densifolium populations in southern California show variation that correlates well with ecological setting and geographical distribution. Vessel element size and density in shoots suggest strong adaptation among different subspecies to efficient water movement in different habitats. Indices of mesomorphy, devised by Carlquist to indicate relative adaptivity of wood, likewise show considerable variation among populations, suggesting that different subspecies have anatomical components that can define them. Relationships among the five subspecies of E. densifolium may be explored through MI value relationships.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate precision grip impairment caused by a lower median nerve block at the wrist. The median nerve block was achieved by injecting bupivacaine hydrochloride into the carpal tunnel, which acutely simulated a median neuropathy. Seven healthy male subjects were instructed to grip, lift, and hold an instrumented handle within 60s using precision grip. The same tasks were performed before and after the nerve block. Force and torque data were recorded using two miniature 6-component force/torque transducers. The precision grip was quantified by the safety margin (i.e. the difference between the actual grip force and the minimal grip force to keep the object from dropping), the variation of grip force, and the migration area of center of pressure (i.e. the area defined by the center of pressure at a digit-transducer surface while holding the handle). Two subjects were unable to complete the precision grip tasks after the nerve block, and their data were excluded from the analyses. The median nerve block caused significant increases (P<0.05) in the safety margin of the grip force (>50%), the grip force variation (>80%), and the area of center of pressure migration (>250%). Median nerve block at the wrist impairs the fine motor control during precision grip. Our results corroborate the important role played by sensory function in hand fine motor control. Clinically, the measures related to precision grip have the potential to quantify impairment of hand function caused by neuromuscular disorders, to monitor the progress of a hand disorder, and to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment or rehabilitation procedure.  相似文献

Cross-comparisons of nectar production data are complicated because different workers use bags made of various materials to exclude animal visitors. Using clonal populations of Asclepias syriaca and A. exaltata in northern Virginia, we carefully measured the effects of four bagging treatments (bridal veil, pellon, paper, plastic) on microenvironment (temperature, relative humidity) and nectar production (volume, concentration, sucrose amount) over the course of a day. In general, bridal veil bags changed the microenvironment least relative to unbagged controls. Plastic bags resulted in higher temperatures and constantly higher relative humidities. Temperature and relative humidity were also elevated, though less dramatically, in paper and pellon bags. Under more humid conditions, flowers contained larger volumes of more dilute nectar. Therefore, researchers who wish to obtain nectar production data that reflect natural field conditions should use bridal veil, or a material with similar properties, to bag inflorescences. We also performed a watering experiment, involving the addition of the equivalent of a 10-cm rain to the A. syriaca plot. After watering, nectar volumes and sucrose amounts were increased approximately twofold.  相似文献

Regulation of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), the major mediators of extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, is crucial to regulate ECM proteolysis, which is important in metastasis. This study examined the effects of 3 flavonoid-enriched fractions (a crude fraction, an anthocyanin-enriched fraction, and a proanthocyanidin-enriched fraction), which were prepared from lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium), on MMP activity in DU145 human prostate cancer cells in vitro. Using gelatin gel electrophoresis, MMP activity was evaluated from cells after 24-hr exposure to blueberry fractions. All fractions elicited an ability to decrease the activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9. Of the fractions tested, the proanthocyanidin-enriched fraction was found to be the most effective at inhibiting MMP activity in these cells. No induction of either necrotic or apoptotic cell death was noted in these cells in response to treatment with the blueberry fractions. These findings indicate that flavonoids from blueberry possess the ability to effectively decrease MMP activity, which may decrease overall ECM degradation. This ability may be important in controlling tumor metastasis formation.  相似文献
