Data on the swim speed, dive depth and feeding rates of three Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) foraging in summer 1998/1999 in Adélie Land, Antarctica were collected using dorsally-mounted loggers, in tandem with oesophageal temperature sensors. Swim speed could be integrated, together with the rate of change of depth, to determine dive and return-to-surface angles. Overall, birds increased rates of change of depth during commuting phases so that dive angles were steeper in dives terminating at greater depths. Angles of descent and ascent during feeding dives were greater than during non-feeding dives. Variation in the descent angle over time of particular dives was generally less than 10°, but the angles of the ascent phases varied more widely. The importance of selecting the optimum descent and ascent angles with respect to prey exploitation, oxygen stores and time gained in the feeding area over the course of a dive by diving at a steeper angle is discussed.  相似文献

Using UDP-d-galactose : 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-d-glucose 4-β-d-galactosyltransferase (EC 2.4.1.22), several methyl β-lactosides have been prepared with 2H- and/or 13C-enrichment at specific sites to facilitate study by 13C (75 MHz) and 1H (600 MHz) n.m.r. spectroscopy. 13C-Chemical shift assignments were verified and the 1H-spectrum of β-lactoside was fully assigned. Sites of enrichment were selected to permit all of the potential three-bond C-C and C-H couplings through the glycosidic bond to be obtained. Replacement of H-3 of the d-glucose residue of methyl β-lactoside with 2H allowed resolution of C-1–H-4′ coupling in the 600-MHz 1H-spectrum. Single or multiple 13C-enrichment at C-1, C-2, C-3, C-1′, C-3′, and/or C-4′ in the disaccharide allowed observation of intra- and inter-residue couplings. 13C-Spin-lattice relaxation-times (T1) are interpreted in terms of molecular motion in solution. The data suggest that methyl β-lactoside has an extended conformation with little rotation about the glycosidic bond. Inter-residue couplings are best explained by tortion angles of φ ~ 40° and ψ ~ 15°, indicating that the conformations of β-lactoside in solution and in the crystal are similar.  相似文献

Summary Endogenously fluorescent, singly occurring, amine-containing cells in tracheal epithelium were examined in 3-, 10-, and 28-day-old rabbits. These cells are pyramidal in shape with the apex projected toward the tracheal lumen. The cytoplasm exhibits a yellow fluorescence which is predominantly supranuclear. Occasional, infranuclear, fluorescent cytoplasmic processes project from the cells. The numbers of fluorescent cells per unit length of trachea increase with age. Acute exposure of 10-day-old rabbits to 13% O2 decreases the number of detectable fluorescent cells in the trachea compared to controls exposed to room air. Similarly, exposure to 750 ppm carbon monoxide decreases the number of fluorescent epithelial cells appearing in tracheas of 10- and 28-day-old rabbits. These results suggest that the amine-containing epithelial cells of the trachea respond to tissue hypoxia and that decreased airway pO2 is not necessary to elicit a response.Supported by a grant from The Council for Tobacco Research, U.S.A., Inc. 7α-Hydroxylation of DHEA by Fusarium moniliforme was investigated with regard to inducibility and characterization of the responsible enzyme system. Using GC/MS, the 7-hydroxylated metabolites of DHEA produced after biotransformation by Fusarium moniliforme mycelia were identified. The strain of Fusarium moniliforme hydroxylated DHEA predominantly at the 7α-position, with minor hydroxylation occurring at the 7β-position. Constitutive 7α-hydroxylation activity was low, but DHEA induced the enzyme complex responsible for 7α-hydroxylation via an increase in protein synthesis. DHEA 7α-hydroxylase was found to be mainly microsomal, and the best production yields of 7α-hydroxy-DHEA (28.5 ± 3.51 pmol/min/mg protein) were obtained with microsomes prepared from 18-h-induced mycelia. Kinetic parameters (KM=1.18 ± 0.035 μM and Vmax=909 ± 27 pmol/min/mg protein) were determined. Carbon monoxide inhibited 7α-hydroxylation of DHEA by microsomes of Fusarium moniliforme. Also, exposure of mycelia to DHEA increased microsomal P450 content. These results demonstrated that: (i) DHEA is 7α-hydroxylated by microsomes of Fusarium moniliforme; (ii) DHEA induces Fusarium moniliforme 7α-hydroxylase; (iii) this enzyme complex contains a cytochrome P450.  相似文献
