Gossypium mustelinum, one of five tetraploid species in the cotton genus, is geographically restricted to a few states in NE Brazil. Allozyme analysis was used to assess levels and patterns of genetic diversity inG. mustelinum and its relationship to the other tetraploid species. Genetic variation was low, with only 6 of 50 loci examined being polymorphic, a mean of 1.14 alleles per locus and a mean panmictic heterozygosity of 0.08. These estimates are low relative to other tetraploid cotton species, but are typical of island endemics. Interpopulational genetic identities were uniformly high, lending support to the concept of there being only one wild species of Brazilian cotton. The limited allelic diversity observed was correlated with geographical distribution, although variability is so limited in the species that geographically marginal populations are electrophoretically ordinary. Phylogenetic and phenetic analyses demonstrate thatG. mustelinum is isolated among polyploid cotton species, occupying one of the three basal clades resulting from an early radiation of polyploid taxa subsequent to polyploid formation. We suggest thatG. mustelinum represents a paleoendemic that presently exists as a series of widely scattered, relictual populations. Despite several centuries of sympatric cultivation ofG. barbadense andG. hirsutum, there was little evidence of interspecific introgression of alleles from cultivated cottons intoG. mustelinum.  相似文献

Octopamine receptor subclasses were first proposed to explain differences in the pharmacological profiles of a range of physiological responses to octopamine obtained in the extensor-tibiae neuromuscular preparation of the locust. Thus, OCTOPAMINE1 receptors which inhibit an endogenous myogenic rhythm, increase intracellular calcium levels. Also OCTOPAMINE2 receptors which modulate neuromuscular transmission in this preparation, increase the level of adenylate cyclase activity. The current status of this classification is reviewed by examining the pharmacology of responses to octopamine in a range of preparations. It is concluded that the distinction between OCTOPAMINE1 and OCTOPAMINE2 receptor types is still valid, but that OCTOPAMINE2 receptors exhibit some tissue specific variations. Studies on a clonedDrosophila octopamine/tyramine (phenolamine) receptor are discussed and illustrate many of the difficulties presently encountered in making a definitive classification of octopamine receptors. These include the possibilities that single receptors may activate multiple second messenger systems and that different agonists may differentially couple the same receptor to different second messenger systems.  相似文献

We have evaluated codon usage bias in Drosophila histone genes and have obtained the nucleotide sequence of a 5,161-bp D. hydei histone gene repeat unit. This repeat contains genes for all five histone proteins (H1, H2a, H2b, H3, and H4) and differs from the previously reported one by a second EcoRI site. These D. hydei repeats have been aligned to each other and to the 5.0-kb (i.e., long) and 4.8-kb (i.e., short) histone repeat types from D. melanogaster. In each species, base composition at synonymous sites is similar to the average genomic composition and approaches that in the small intergenic spacers of the histone gene repeats. Accumulation of synonymous changes at synonymous sites after the species diverged is quite high. Both of these features are consistent with the relatively low codon usage bias observed in these genes when compared with other Drosophila genes. Thus, the generalization that abundantly expressed genes in Drosophila have high codon bias and low rates of silent substitution does not hold for the histone genes.   相似文献

Anesthetists are at special risk for becoming addicted to some of the drugs they work with. The problem was highlighted by the recent death of a physician in Comox, BC, and a doctor''s brush with death at a hospital near Ottawa. The University of Ottawa has responded with a program, the professional Assistance Program for the Impaired or Disabled Physician, that is in the final stages of approval. Although it will be aimed initially at anesthetists and anesthesia residents in the university''s teaching hospitals, there are hopes the program will spread eventually to other medical departments.  相似文献

The diets and diel feeding behaviour of six O-group gadoid species are described, the cod Gadus morhua (L.), the haddock Melanogramus aeglefinus (L.), whiting Merlangius merlangus (L.), saithe Pollachius virens (L.), Norway pout Trisopterus esmarkii (L.) and the blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou (R.). There were differences, in the main food groups selected by each species with respect to the type, size and number. The main prey consumed did not vary with depth. Cod, saithe and Norway pout had only one period of feeding activity whereas haddock and whiting apparently had two. The diets of haddock and whiting varied in association with these two periods. It is suggested that the differences between the diets were the result of each species having a different feeding behaviour which reflects that adopted in adult life.  相似文献

Growth of phase alpha 3a on stationary phase Vibrio cultures requires micro-aerophilic conditions and is inhibited by aeration. Since pre-conditioning of the bacteria by allowing them to stand for 24 h after shaking for 3 d is an important aspect of the stationary phase phage growth system, various physiological and morphological characteristics of the stationary phase cells during the transition from shaking to standing were investigated. Shaken stationary phase cells were less viable and more sensitive to ultraviolet irradiation and heat than standing stationary phase cells. During pre-conditioning the small, non-flagellated cells present in shaken stationary phase cultures underwent morphological changes and became large, flagellated rods which resembled exponential phase cells. The transition of stationary phase cells from shaking to standing was associated with a marked increase in total RNA synthesis but a rapid and large decrease in total protein synthesis. Intracellular concentrations of ATP in shaken stationary phase cells were 53% lower than those in standing stationary phase cells. Studies on leucine uptake indicated that its transport was inhibited by isoleucine and that the major part (90%) of the total leucine uptake was due to a shared system for uptake of both amino acids. Shaken stationary phase cells transported less leucine than standing stationary phase cells. Inhibition of phage growth in aerated stationary phase cultures was not due to the prevention of phase absorption by shaking. It is suggested that the observed differences between shaken and standing stationary phase cells could be due to aeration affecting the template specificity of the Vibrio RNA polymerase.  相似文献

With the use of quantitative histological techniques, we have described, in normal mice, the formation of a system of intercellular channels within the embryonic retina and continuing without interruption into the optic stalk. The channels develop in advance of the morphological differentiation of the retinal ganglion cells and their neurites. Moreover, they appear at predictable times during gestation and are localized along the potential route to be taken by the earliest developing fibers of the optic nerve. A functional relationship may exist between the development of the channels and the subsequent outgrowth of the optic nerve from the eye. We have also examined a series of mouse embryos homozygous for the mutant gene ocular retardation (orJ), which causes optic nerve aplasia. In the orJ mutant, there is a reduction in area of these extracellular spaces and the optic nerve fails to exit from the eye. The lack of intercellular space within the mutant retina is associated with an increased number of cells which, in turn, may result from a continuing absence of normal cell death during earlier stages.  相似文献
