Electromagnetic fields can interact with biological tissue both electrically and mechanically. This study investigated the mechanical interaction between brain tissue and an extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electric field by measuring the resultant vibrational amplitude. The exposure cell is a section of X-band waveguide that was modified by the addition of a center conductor to form a small TEM cell within the waveguide structure. The ELF signal is applied to the center conductor of the TEM cell. The applied ELF electric field generates an electrostrictive force on the surface of the brain tissue. This force causes the tissue to vibrate at a frequency equal to twice the frequency of the applied sinusoidal signal. An X-band signal is fed through the waveguide, scattered by the vibrating sample, and detected by a phase-sensitive receiver. Using a time-averaging spectrum analyzer, a vibration sensitivity of approximately 0.2 nmp-p can be achieved. The amplitude of the brain tissue vibrational response is constant for vibrational frequencies below 50 Hz; between 50 and 200 Hz resonant phenomena were observed; and above 200 Hz the amplitude fall-off is rapid.  相似文献

Summary Three cases of Merkel cell (small cell) carcinoma of the skin are presented with immunohistochemistry for epithelial and neuroendocrine antigens. All three cases showed distinctive punctate perinuclear cytoplasmic positivity for cytokeratin which corresponded to aggregates of intermediate filaments, seen ultrastructurally in two cases. Epithelial membrane antigen was also identified in two cases. Only one case showed cytoplasmic positivity for neuron specific enolase, and immunostaining for a battery of polypeptide hormones was negative. The demonstration of cytokeratin perinuclear inclusions provides a distinctive immunohistochemical feature to aid in their diagnosis. Two of the three patients had chronic lymphocytic leukaemia years before the diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma. The possible association of lymphoproliferative disorders, particularly B cell tumours, and Merkel cell carcinoma is discussed.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation by field-grown soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) was assessed by the natural 15N abundance and ureide methods. The field sites (five) and genotypes (six, plus two levels of inoculation on Bragg) were chosen to provide a range of proportions of plant N derived from nitrogen fixation (P). Genotypes K466, K468, nts1007, and nts1116 and Davis were included on the basis of their reported tolerance of the suppressive effects of nitrate on nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Bragg was included as a `nitrate-sensitive' genotype. Seeds of all genotypes were inoculated at sowing with Bradyrhizobium japonicum CB1809 (USDA136). Amounts of nitrate in the soil profile (0-1.2 meter depth) at sowing ranged from 70 (site 3) to 278 kilograms per hectare (site 5), resulting in large effects on plant nodulation, on the δ15N values of nodulated plants, on the relative abundance of ureide-N in vacuum-extracted sap (VES) and stem extracts, and finally on the estimates of P. There was no relationship between amount of soil nitrate at sowing and the δ15N of the plant-available soil N. Correlation matrices of the measured and calculated parameters indicated generally weak correlations between crop growth (dry matter and N) and the parameters of symbiotic activity (nodule weight, δ15N, relative ureide-N); correlations were strong and highly significant between nodulation and the measures of nitrogen fixation (δ15N, relative ureide-N; r = 0.79-0.92). Estimates of P ranged between 0 and 68% (δ15N) and between 6 and 56% (ureide) and were highly correlated (r = 0.97). Results indicated that the ureide method can be used with confidence to assess P by field-grown crops of soybean.  相似文献

Recent studies of the evolution of religion have revealed the cognitive underpinnings of belief in supernatural agents, the role of ritual in promoting cooperation, and the contribution of morally punishing high gods to the growth and stabilization of human society. The universality of religion across human society points to a deep evolutionary past. However, specific traits of nascent religiosity, and the sequence in which they emerged, have remained unknown. Here we reconstruct the evolution of religious beliefs and behaviors in early modern humans using a global sample of hunter-gatherers and seven traits describing hunter-gatherer religiosity: animism, belief in an afterlife, shamanism, ancestor worship, high gods, and worship of ancestors or high gods who are active in human affairs. We reconstruct ancestral character states using a time-calibrated supertree based on published phylogenetic trees and linguistic classification and then test for correlated evolution between the characters and for the direction of cultural change. Results indicate that the oldest trait of religion, present in the most recent common ancestor of present-day hunter-gatherers, was animism, in agreement with long-standing beliefs about the fundamental role of this trait. Belief in an afterlife emerged, followed by shamanism and ancestor worship. Ancestor spirits or high gods who are active in human affairs were absent in early humans, suggesting a deep history for the egalitarian nature of hunter-gatherer societies. There is a significant positive relationship between most characters investigated, but the trait “high gods” stands apart, suggesting that belief in a single creator deity can emerge in a society regardless of other aspects of its religion.  相似文献

The deposition of Aβ peptide in the brain is the key event in Alzheimer disease progression. Therefore, the prevention of Aβ self assembly into disease-associated oligomers is a logical strategy for treatment. π stacking is known to provide structural stability to many amyloids; two phenylalanine residues within the Aβ 14–23 self recognition element are in such an arrangement in many solved structures. Therefore, we targeted this structural stacking by substituting these two phenylalanine residues with their D-enantiomers. The resulting peptides were able to modulate Aβ aggregation in vitro and reduce Aβ cytotoxicity in primary neuronal cultures. Using kinetic analysis of fibril formation, electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering characterization of oligomer size distributions, we demonstrate that, in addition to altering fibril structural characteristics, these peptides can induce the formation of larger amorphous aggregates which are protective against toxic oligomers, possibly because they are able to sequester the toxic oligomers during co-incubation. Alternatively, they may alter the surface structure of the oligomers such that they can no longer interact with cells to induce toxic pathways.  相似文献

Accurate chromosome segregation is achieved by a series of highly regulated processes that culminate in the metaphase-to-anaphase transition of the cell cycle. In the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the degradation of the securin protein Pds1 reverses the binding and inhibition of the separase protein Esp1. Esp1 cleaves Scc1. That cleavage promotes the dissociation of the cohesin complex from the chromosomes and leads the separation of sister chromatids. Proteolysis of Pds1 is regulated by the anaphase-promoting complex (APC), a large multi-subunit E3 ubiquitin ligase whose activity is regulated by Cdc20/Fizzy. We have previously shown that the Caenorhabditis elegans genes mdf-1/MAD1 and mdf-2/MAD2 encode key members of the spindle checkpoint. Loss of function of either gene leads to an accumulation of somatic and heritable defects and ultimately results in death. Here we show that a missense mutation in fzy-1/CDC20/Fizzy suppresses mdf-1 lethality. We identified a FZY-1-interacting protein, IFY-1, a novel destruction-box protein. IFY-1 accumulates in one-cell-arrested emb-30/APC4 embryos and interacts with SEP-1, a C. elegans separase, suggesting that IFY-1 functions as a C. elegans securin.  相似文献

Data collated from around the world indicate that, for every tonne of shoot dry matter produced by crop legumes, the symbiotic relationship with rhizobia is responsible for fixing, on average on a whole plant basis (shoots and nodulated roots), the equivalent of 30–40 kg of nitrogen (N). Consequently, factors that directly influence legume growth (e.g. water and nutrient availability, disease incidence and pests) tend to be the main determinants of the amounts of N2 fixed. However, practices that either limit the presence of effective rhizobia in the soil (no inoculation, poor inoculant quality), increase soil concentrations of nitrate (excessive tillage, extended fallows, fertilizer N), or enhance competition for soil mineral N (intercropping legumes with cereals) can also be critical. Much of the N2 fixed by the legume is usually removed at harvest in high-protein seed so that the net residual contributions of fixed N to agricultural soils after the harvest of legumegrain may be relatively small.Nonetheless, the inclusion of legumes in a cropping sequence generally improves the productivity of following crops. Whilesome of these rotational effects may be associated with improvements in availability of N in soils, factors unrelated to N also play an important role. Recent results suggest that one such non-N benefit may be due to the impact on soil biology of hydrogenemitted from nodules as a by-product of N2, fixation.  相似文献
