Introduction
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are produced and can accumulate during chronic inflammation, as might be present in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). AGEs are involved in the development of cardiovascular disease. Background
A recent study on expression and function of the ortholog of the Drosophila collier (col) gene in various arthropods including insects, crustaceans and chelicerates suggested a de novo function of col in the development of the appendage-less intercalary segment of insects. However, this assumption was made on the background of the now widely-accepted Pancrustacea hypothesis that hexapods represent an in-group of the crustaceans. Abstract. 1. In many undisturbed watersheds along the Pacific Rim, anadromous salmon ( Oncorhynchus spp.) provide a predictable source of carrion to the riparian zone, largely due to horizontal transfer of salmon carcasses by bears ( Ursus spp.) and other vertebrates.
2. Burying beetles are important members of the north-temperate carrion fauna, and may utilise salmon carcasses and remnants for breeding. In this study, isotopic and observational data are reported that demonstrate previously unrecognised Nicrophorus investigator (Zetterstedt) reproduction on large salmon carcasses from five watersheds in coastal British Columbia.

Stable isotope signatures (δ15 N and δ13 C) of adult beetles collected in autumn indicate a diet of salmon origin in all but one individual from all watersheds, suggesting that this beetle–salmon association is widespread. Comparison of autumn isotope signatures to individuals collected randomly in summer suggests that isotope signatures represent the larval carrion source from the previous autumn rather than immediate adult diet.
4. In a survey of N. investigator use of salmon carcasses from two watersheds, 35 broods were observed on chum and pink salmon carcasses, including 16 natural brood complexes containing over 100 larvae, and five ranging from 250 to 750 larvae.

The solubility and dissolution behaviour of A- and B-type crystals of short chain amylose were measured both directly and using differential scanning calorimetry in the temperature range 30-110 degrees C. Dissolution in the calorimeter was affected by super-heating to the extent of 24-28 degrees C. Following trends previously found by calorimetry the B-type crystal polymorph was more soluble than the A-type. Analysis of the chain composition of the dissolved material revealed a preferential solubilisation of the short chains at the lower temperatures. The solubility of both crystal polymorphs and the magnitude of the preferential solubilisation effect was reduced in the presence of 30% w/w sucrose. A comparison of calorimetric measurements of crystal dissolution and the gelatinisation of native granular waxy maize and potato starches found some broad similarities, such as transition temperatures and their composition dependence, and some differences, such as the relatively narrow temperature range of granular gelatinisation, which reflects its cooperative nature. 相似文献

The effect of poly-L-lysine concentration and degree of polymerisation on the gelation of pectins differing in charge density and distribution was examined, through the determination of gel stiffness, swelling behaviour and the binding of poly-L-lysine to the gel network. Poly-L-lysine acts as a crosslinker of concentrated pectin solutions, with its effectiveness showing dependencies on pH and charge distribution on the pectin. The development of a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method with positive electrospray ionisation (ESI(+)) and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) for the selective and sensitive bioanalytical determination of amisulpride, a substituted benzamide derivative, in human plasma is described. Plasma was cleaned up using a liquid-liquid extraction (diisopropylether:dichloromethane=1:1 (v/v)) procedure. The chemically related drug sulpiride was used as internal standard (ISTD) and a primary calibration function was established in the concentration range of 0.50-500.52 ng/ml for amisulpride in plasma by triple analysis of the corresponding calibration standards. A linear relationship between concentration and signal intensity (given as peak area ratio analyte/ISTD) was obtained (linear regression: r=0.9999). A lower limit of quantification (LLQ) of 0.50 ng/ml was used during measurement of study plasma samples. Satisfying results of within-day precision (CV=0.79 to 1.98%) and accuracy (mean relative deviation: -1.68 to 3.58%) and between-day precision (CV=1.34 to 4.62%) and accuracy (mean relative deviation: -1.73 to -3.77%) as well as of recovery (amisulpride: 81.74 to 84.83%; sulpiride: 58.65%) and selectivity investigations confirmed the high reliability of this established LC-MS/MS method. Sufficient stability of amisulpride in plasma was achieved during freeze-thaw-cycles, for storage periods of 24h at room temperature and 20 days at <-20 degrees C as well as in extracts (storage conditions: <-20 degrees C, 6 days and 7 degrees C, 6 days) with mean relative deviations between - 2.83 and 2.91%. An example of a pharmacokinetic profile determined after administration of an amisulpride 200mg dose in a pilot study is given in this paper. A peak plasma concentration (C(max)) of 522.58 ng/ml was achieved after 3.55 h (t(max)). Corresponding values of areas under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) of 3405.35 ngh/ml (AUC(0-infinity)) and 3306.54 ngh/ml (AUC(0-tlast)) were obtained. Autochthonous and allochthonous bacteria were isolated from hindgut chamber and large intestine of fed and starved Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.). All bacterial strains isolated from hindgut chamber belong to carnobacteria. However, only 10.2% of the bacteria strains from the large intestine belong to carnobacteria. Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis using three selective primers, was performed to further identify the carnobacteria strains. Nine of these were isolated from hindgut chamber contents, ten associated with epithelial cells of the hindgut chamber, and six isolated from the large intestines of fed and starved fish. The 25 isolates segregated into eight clusters. The major cluster comprised nine strains isolated from the hindgut chamber of both fed and starved fish showing low similarity with the reference strains. The other strains isolated from the hindgut were located in clusters showing high similarity with Carnobacterium gallinarum or Carnobacterium piscicola. Strains isolated from large intestine appeared more divergent and were located in five different clusters. Autochthonous (indigenous) bacteria were clearly demonstrated in the hindgut chamber as transmission electron microscopy revealed rod-shaped bacteria between adjacent microvilli. Geographic distributions of most temperate marine fishes are affected by postglacial recolonisation events, which have left complex genetic imprints on populations of marine species. This study investigated population structure and demographic history of European sprat (Sprattus sprattus L.) by combining inference from both mtDNA and microsatellite genetic markers throughout the species' distribution. We compared effects from genetic drift and mutation for both genetic markers in shaping genetic differentiation across four transition zones. Microsatellite markers revealed significant isolation by distance and a complex population structure across the species' distribution (overall θ(ST)=0.038, P<0.01). Across transition zones markers indicated larger effects of genetic drift over mutations in the northern distribution of sprat contrasting a stronger relative impact of mutation in the species' southern distribution in the Mediterranean region. These results were interpreted to reflect more recent divergence times between northern populations in accordance with previous findings. This study demonstrates the usefulness of comparing inference from different markers and estimators of divergence for phylogeographic and population genetic studies in species with weak genetic structure, as is the case in many marine species. 相似文献

To maximize the probability of rapid contact with a female's pheromone plume, the trajectories of male foraging flights might be expected to be directed with respect to wind flow and also to be energetically efficient. 2. Flights directed either upwind, downwind, or crosswind have been proposed as optimal strategies for rapid and/or energetically efficient plume contact. Other possible strategies are random and Lévy walks, which have trajectories and turn frequencies that are not dictated by the direction of wind flow. 3. The planar flight paths of males of the day-active moth Virbia lamae were recorded during the customary time of its sexual activity. 4. We found no directional preference in these foraging flights with respect to the direction of contemporaneous wind flow, but, because crosswind encompasses twice the possible orientations of either upwind or downwind, a random orientation is in effect a de facto crosswind strategy. 5.
