Action of surface-active substances on biological membranes IV. Hemolytic and membrane-perturbing action of homologous series of β-d-glucopyranosyl-1-alkylphosphates

The hemolytic action of a homologous series of β-d-glucopyranosyl-1-alkylphosphates on human erythrocytes has been examined. The agent's affinity for the red cell membrane and the mean number of the agent's molecules which, upon interaction with an erythrocyte, make it undergo hemolysis have been measured. The contribution of the head group and that of a CH₂ group of the surfactants to the free energy of the agents' binding to the cell membrane have been estimated. The effect of the surfactants on the red cell volume and the lytic concentrations of the agents have been measured. The contribution of a CH₂ group to the free energy of the interaction of the amphiphiles embedded in the membrane bilayer with their environment has been evaluated and is proposed to be used as a measure of the membrane matrix stability.     

The influence of oligonucleotide-effector on the selectivity of sequence specific modification of 16 S rRNA

The influence of duplex stabilizing oligonucleotide-effector (oligonucleotide, carrying N-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenazinium residues on both ends), on selectivity of site-directed modification of E. coli 16 S rRNA (1542 nucleotides in length) under the conditions of its secondary structure stability was studied. The constant of cooperative binding of the reagent and the oligonucleotide-effector with 16 S rRNA was determined. The accuracy of modification was shown to double in the presence of 50 microM effector at 5 microM concentration of the reagent.     

Radiosensitive strains of Drosophila. XII. Realization of the effect of mutation rad(2)201G1 at the cell and organism levels

Two effects of gamma-rays were studied on radiosensitive mutant rad(2)201G1 and wild type strain rad+ of Drosophila: the rate of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in somatic cells and lethality of individuals irradiated at different stages of preimaginal development. It has been shown that mutant strain is characterized by the increased rate of chromosome aberrations in somatic cells and lethality of developing flies. Control strain rad+ is characterized by more complicated relationship between the effects analyzed. The results obtained are discussed in connection with the action of rad(2)201G1 gene on repair of genetic damages and with existence of postradiation compensation mechanisms intrinsic in development of multicellular organisms.     

Primary structure of bovine cerebellum GTP-binding protein G39 and its effect on the adenylate cyclase system

The primary structure of bovine cerebellum GTP-binding protein alpha-subunit, protein G39, was determined by parallel analysis of the protein amino acid sequence and the corresponding cDNA nucleotide sequence. The protein consists of 354 amino acid residues and has a molecular mass of 40064 Da. High homology between G39 and other G-proteins, especially rat brain G0, was shown. An assumption is made that certain brain adenylate cyclase system properties are determined by the presence of G39.     

90Sr and 137Cs in higher aquatic plants of some water basins on the East-Urals Radioactive Trace: species features of radionuclide concentration

The paper summarizes the results from radioecological studies of a number of water basins located on the East-Urals Radioactive Trace (EURT), as exemplified by the lakes Large Ighish, Small Ighish and Shablish which are included in the medium-distance and remote zone of the EURT. The lake Misyash which is situated in the opposite direction from the release vector and has been only contaminated due to global fallouts has been used as a control water basin. The current species composition of the high aquatic plants and species-specific concentration of 90Sr and 137Cs in them was studied, also, the radionuclide accumulation and discrimination coefficients were estimated.
