Competition between parasites within a host can influence the evolution of parasite virulence and host resistance, but few studies examine the effects of unrelated parasites with conflicting transmission strategies infecting the same host. Vertically transmitted (VT) parasites, transmitted from mother to offspring, are in conflict with virulent, horizontally transmitted (HT) parasites, because healthy hosts are necessary to maximize VT parasite fitness. Resolution of the conflict between these parasites should lead to the evolution of one of two strategies: avoidance, or sabotage of HT parasite virulence by the VT parasite. We investigated two co-infecting parasites in the amphipod host, Gammarus roeseli: VT microsporidia have little effect on host fitness, but acanthocephala modify host behaviour, increasing the probability that the amphipod is predated by the acanthocephalan's definitive host. We found evidence for sabotage: the behavioural manipulation induced by the Acanthocephala Polymorphus minutus was weaker in hosts also infected by the microsporidia Dictyocoela sp. (roeselum) compared to hosts infected by P. minutus alone. Such conflicts may explain a significant portion of the variation generally observed in behavioural measures, and since VT parasites are ubiquitous in invertebrates, often passing undetected, conflict via transmission may be of great importance in the study of host-parasite relationships.  相似文献

Competitive interactions between coinfecting parasites are expected to be strong when they affect transmission success. When transmission is enhanced by altering host behaviour, intraspecific conflict can lead to 'coinfection exclusion' by the first-in parasite or to a 'sabotage' of behavioural manipulation by the youngest noninfective parasite. We tested these hypotheses in the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis, reversing phototaxis in its intermediate host Gammarus pulex. No evidence was found for coinfection exclusion in gammarids sequentially exposed to infection. Behavioural manipulation was slightly weakened but not cancelled in gammarids infected with mixed larval stages. Therefore, coinfecting infective and noninfective larvae both suffered competition, potentially resulting in delayed transmission and increased risk of mortality, respectively. Consequently, noninfective larva is not just a 'passive passenger' in the manipulated host, which raises interesting questions about the selective pressures at play and the mechanisms underlying manipulation.  相似文献

Glass eels arriving from the sea use alternative migratory tactics, leading either to the colonization of rivers or to an early settlement in marine or estuarine habitats. In the field, the migration may be environmentally affected by water temperature and the migratory behavior could be physiologically dependent on the body condition (energetic status). To investigate how these environmental and physiological effects on the migration are behaviorally mediated, we experimentally tested the effects of changes in water temperature and body condition on locomotor activity (upstream swimming) and salinity preference of Anguilla anguilla glass eels. Low water temperature reduced significantly both locomotor activity and preference for freshwater, in accordance with field data showing that low water temperatures hinder both the estuarine migration and river recruitment. Glass eels switched from a freshwater- towards a saltwater-preference as their body condition decreased, confirming that the energetic status may affect the migratory behavior. We suggest that, in the wild, this condition-dependent change in salinity preference of low body condition glass eels induces an early settlement in marine or estuarine habitats. Such a behavioral shift, stopping the energy expenditure linked to river-oriented migratory behavior, may be adaptive by limiting the probability of death due to exhaustion. Our results show that the glass eel migratory behavior, through locomotor activity and salinity preference, may be controlled by interacting physiological and environmental factors.  相似文献

The horizontally-transmitted acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus and the vertically-transmitted microsporidian parasite Dictyocoela roeselum have both been shown to influence on the antitoxic responses of mono-infected Gammarus roeseli exposed to cadmium. The present study investigates the effect of this co-infection on the antitoxic defence responses of naturally infected females exposed to cadmium stress. Our results revealed that, depending on the cadmium dose, bi-infection induced only slight, significant increased cell damage in G. roeseli as compared to non-infection. In addition, the antitoxic defence pattern of cadmium-exposed bi-infected hosts was similar to the pattern of cadmium-exposed D. roeselum-infected hosts. Reduced glutathione concentrations, carotenoid levels and γ-glutamylcystein ligase activity decreased, while metallothionein concentrations increased. This similar pattern indicates that host physiology can be controlled to some extent by microsporidia under stress conditions. It supports the hypothesis of a disruption of acanthocephalan effects in the presence of microsporidia. However, the global negative effects of bi-infection on host condition should be tested on more biological models, since competition between parasites depends on life history trade-off.  相似文献

In most species, both sexes may mate with more than one partner during their life. In terrestrial isopods (woodlice) female remating can occur within a reproductive season (immediate remating) or after a period of sexual rest and sperm storage, that is in a subsequent reproductive season (delayed remating). The pattern of sperm precedence is unknown in both cases. These two female remating patterns may shape male-male competition in different ways. To elucidate both patterns of female remating and sperm precedence, we used an albinism mutation in Armadillidium vulgare to track paternity in laboratory experiments. Males had low remating success after immediate remating attempts, mainly because of the female's refractory behaviour. However, refractory behaviour seemed to be lost after female sexual rest: delayed remating attempts were as successful as first mating attempts with virgin females. In both immediate and delayed remating, competing males had similar fertilization success, but varied in sperm precedence. We hypothesize that males might induce the refractory mating behaviour in females to ensure their paternity. This could be a strategy that evolved in woodlice after the loss of precopulatory mate guarding during adaptation to the terrestrial environment. Summary Among the indole compounds formed when tryptophan 2-14C is metabolized by Rhizobium, indole-3-lactic acid (ILA) is specially studied. In the course of experiments carried out in the culture medium of growing Rhizobium and in suspensions of washed bacterial cells the amount of ILA formed is compared with that of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) occurring simulataneously. The formation of ILA and that of IAA directly depend on a transamination reaction. A large quantity of ILA is present in suspensions of washed bacterial cells.When ILA alone, as precursor, is incubated with Rhizobium, several products are identified: IAA, indole-3-acetaldehyde and tryptophol. Tryptophan is also detected in the aqueous fraction and is labelled when ILA 2-14C is used. The pathway of this metabolism are discussed and a general scheme is suggested.  相似文献
