Propagation of Geotrichum candidum in Acid Brine

Geotrichum candidum completely neutralized the acid brine and reduced its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) by 88%. Yield of dry mycelium was 62 g per 100 g of BOD utilized.     

The integument of the paddlefish,Polyodon spathula

The integument of the paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) is unusual as a relatively small amount of mucus is produced by epithelial cells that are not modified into regular mucous gland cells. A thick compact epidermis and dermis compensate for the slight amount of mucus secreted. Paddlefish have a variety of scales formed of concentric bony lamellae containing osteocytes. There are five kinds of scales: dorsal and ventral fulcra on the caudal fin, rhomboidal scales on the caudal lobe, horny denticles over the pectoral girdle, calcareous denticles on the trunk, and anchor-shaped plates on the rostrum. Except for the fulcra, the scales are undoubtedly vestigial. The numerous surface pits on the rostrum, head, operculum, and throat are epithelial invaginations which are not connected to lateral line canals. No nerves lead to the pits. The spherical to cuboidal and often ciliated cells at the base of the pits are considered to be aplasic cells of unformed neuromasts.     

Studies on recovery mechanism from rinderpest virus infection in rabbits. I. Effect of anti-thymocyte serum and thymectomy.

The role of cell-mediated immunity in recovery from rinderpest virus infection in rabbits was investigated by application of immunosuppressive procedures, i.e., treatment with anti-thymocyte serum and combined treatment with thymectomy and anti-thymocyte serum, both of which were confirmed to depress significantly cell-mediated immunity in rabbits. The immunosuppressed animals recovered in almost the normal fashion in terms of clinical signs, of virus clearance from the blood and lymphoid tissues and of repair of the lesions. It was suggested that the thymus-dependent cell-mediated immunity may not be essential in recovery from rinderpest virus infection. Possibility of participation of other recovery mechanisms was discussed.     

Detection of the complex of chromatin DNase-tRNA by gel filtration

By gel filtration on Sephadex G-100, the formation of the complex of chromatin DNase-tRNA has been detected. The complex is reactivated after RNase treatment. The molecular weight of the enzyme-inhibitory complex is estimated to be 85,000.     

Rice straw decomposition in rice-field soil

Rice straw, buried in a rice-field during the dry season decomposed at a rate of 0.0075 day-1. Seventy five percent of the biomass, 70 percent carbon, 50 percent nitrogen and 30 percent phosphorus remained after 139 days of decomposition. Rice straw decomposition furnished 33% N and 8% P of the total nitrogen and phosphorus provided by man.
