Bacteroids prepared from nodules of soybean and bean were tested for viability. Contrary to the prevailing view that bacteroids are nonviable, it was found that bacteroids averaged 90% viability, irrespective of Rhizobium strain, nodule age, or nodule environment.  相似文献

The structure and dynamics of phosphatidylcholine bilayers containing chlorophyll were studied by X-ray diffraction and absorption polarization spectroscopy in the form of hydrated orientated multilayers below the thermal phase transition of the lipid chains and by nuclear magnetic resonance in the form of single-wall vesicles above the thermal transition. Our results show that (a) chlorophyll is incorporated into the phosphatidylcholine bilayers with its porphyrin ring located anisotropically in the polar headgroup layer of the membrane and with its phytol chain penetrating in a relatively extended form between the phosphatidylcholine fatty acid chains in the hydrocarbon core of the mixed bilayer membrane and (b) the intramolecular anisotropic rotational dynamics of the host phosphatidylcholine molecules are significantly perturbed upon chlorophyll incorporation into the bilayer at all levels of the phosphatidylcholine structure. These dynamics for the host phosphatidtlcholine fatty acid chains are qualitatively different from that of the incorporated chlorophyll phytol chains on a 10?9 ? 10?10s time scale in the ideally mixed two-component bilayer.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a six-pack versus a four-pack cool vest in reducing heat strain in men dressed in firefighting ensemble, while resting and exercising in a warm/humid environment [34.4°C (day bulb), 28.9°C (wet bulb)]. Male volunteers (n = 12) were monitored for rectal temperature (T re), mean skin temperature (T sk), heart rate, and energy expenditure during three test trials: control (no cool vest), four-pack vest, and six-pack vest. The cool vests were worn under the firefighting ensemble and over Navy dungarees. The protocol consisted of two cycles of 30 min seated rest and 30 min walking on a motorized treadmill (1.12 m · s–1, 0% grade). Tolerance time for the control trial (93 min) was significantly less than both vest trials (120 min). Throughout heat exposure, energy expenditure varied during rest and exercise, but no differences existed among all trials (P > 0.05). During the first 60 min of heat exposure, physiological responses were similar for the four-pack and six-pack vests. However, during the second 60 min of heat exposure the six-pack vest had a greater impact on reducing heat strain than the four-pack vest. PeakT e andT sk at the end of heat exposure for 6-pack vest [mean (SD) 38.0(0.3)°C and 36.8(0.7)°C] were significantly lower compared to four-pack [38.6 (0.4)°C and 38.1(0.5)°C] and controls [38.9(0.5)°C and 38.4(0.5)°C]. Our findings suggest that the six-pack vest is more effective than the four-pack vest at reducing heat strain and improves performance of personnel wearing a firefighting ensemble.  相似文献

An electron microscopic study of asteroid bodies in granulomatous diseases of man, in particular in sarcoidosis and foreign body reactions, has led to the following conclusions. 1. Asteroid cytoplasmic inclusions are composed of organic proteineous structures. The body and arms of the stars consist mainly of longitudinally orientated, partially helically wound, collagen free, microfilaments with a diameter of approximately 50 A. Microtubules participate in their composition to a lesser degree. The filaments intertwine in various directions within the corpus of the stars. 2. Deeply osmiophilic compact structures, considered to represent condensation forms of protein, are consistently present within the body of the stars. These structures are partially granular and partially ring-shaped; in the latter case, transverse sections of tubules are noted. Since it is disputed whether they constitute procentrioles or postcentrioles, they are best referred to as paracentrioles. 3. The asteroid bodies are derivatives of the cytosphere, thus relating, in the broad sense, to the microfilamentous and microtubular apparatus of the cell. 4. The asteroid bodies in multinucleated giant cells participate in the spatial compartmentalization of the cytoplasmic content and nuclei. The sphere, aided by the centrioles, induces the formation of the mitotic spindle and, in addition, function as an organizing system of the cell. 5. The light microscopical periastral clear zone does not correspond to a fluid space. Rather, it consists of closely packed accumulations of laminated and whorled myelin figures, which are derived from the degradation of lipoid substances.  相似文献

We questioned whether carbon monoxide hypoxia (COH) would affect peripheral blood flow by neural activation of adrenoceptors to the extent we had found in other forms of hypoxia. We studied this problem in hindlimb muscles of four groups of anesthetized dogs (untreated, alpha 1-blocked, alpha 1 + alpha 2-blocked, and beta 2-blocked). Cardiac output increased, but hindlimb blood flow (QL) and resistance (RL) remained at prehypoxic levels during COH (O2 content reduced 50%) in untreated animals. When activity in the sciatic nerve was reversibly cold blocked, QL doubled and RL decreased 50%. These changes with nerve block were the same during COH, suggesting that neural activity to hindlimb vasculature was not increased by COH. In animals treated with phenoxybenzamine (primarily alpha 1-blocked), RL dropped (approximately 50%) during COH, an indication that catecholamines played a significant role in maintaining tone to skeletal muscle. Animals with both alpha 1 + alpha 2-adrenergic blockade (phenoxybenzamine and yohimbine added) did not survive COH. RL was higher in beta 2-block than in the untreated group during COH, but nerve cooling indicated that beta 2-adrenoceptor vasodilation was accomplished primarily by humoral means. The above findings demonstrated that adrenergic receptors were important in the regulation of QL and RL during COH, but they were not activated by sympathetic nerve stimulation to the limb muscles.  相似文献
