Abstract In normal ascidian development, cuticular fins begin to form at the late tailbud stage and are fully formed at hatching. When one or several neurulae were manually demembranated (follicle cells, vitelline coat and test cells removed) and cultured in seawater they failed to form caudal fins. Fins were normal when the follicle cells alone were removed. The shape of the fins was normal when demembranation was delayed to the late tailbud stage. Does demembranation cause the loss of an essential factor produced by the embryos themselves or do the test cells provide a factor for fin morphogenesis? Demembranated neurulae of Ascidia callosa were cultured in groups ranging in size from 2 to 80 in 1 ml volumes of seawater. The mean lengths of the caudal fins increased with group size. In larger groups, some embryos developed fins that were normal in shape and as long as undemembranated controls. Results were similar with Corella inflata. These experiments suggest that a diffusible substance from the embryos facilitates fin morphogenesis and that test cells are not required. Test cells deposit ‘ornaments’ on the tunic in some species. In other species no ornaments are produced. Ten families are compared. It is proposed that the test cells make the tunic hydrophilic.  相似文献

Silicified polyplacophorans are common in the Lower Devonian Garra Formation in New South Wales. Four taxa occur within the lower 237 m of the formation at 14 horizons associated with an abundant and diverse fauna. Chelodes calceoloides Etheridge ranges through the section. New taxa are Chelodes cordatus sp. nov., Acutichiton depressolatus sp. nov., and Jugochiton patulus gen. and sp. nov. A single plate of an indeterminate genus occurs in the lower portion of the Camelford Limestone.  相似文献

This is a methodological study exploring the use of quantitative histopathology applied to the cervix to discriminate between normal and cancerous (consisting of adenocarcinoma and adenocarcinoma in situ) tissue samples. The goal is classifying tissue samples, which are populations of cells, from measurements on the cells. Our method uses one particular feature, the IODs-Index, to create a tissue level feature. The specific goal of this study is to find a threshold for the IODs-Index that is used to create the tissue level feature. The main statistical tool is Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. When applied to the data, our method achieved promising results with good estimated sensitivity and specificity for our data set. The optimal threshold for the IODs-Index was found to be 2.12.  相似文献

This paper explores the determinants of extinction of endemic plant taxa in mediterranean-climate regions in South Africa and southwestern Australia. Major threats to biodiversity in these areas include agriculture, deforestation, fragmentation, invasive alien organisms and urbanization. Case studies from the two regions show that synergisms between factors can lead to discontinuous, or non-linear, responses that have increased extinction rates (or threaten to) beyond predictions based on simple deterministic processes.  相似文献

In 1976, Crump, Hoel, Langley, and Peto described how almost any dose‐response relationship for carcinogens becomes linear at low doses when background cancers are taken into account. This has been used, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USEPA, as partial justification for a regulatory posture that assumes low‐dose linearity, as is illustrated by a discussion of regulation of benzene as a carcinogen. The argument depends critically on the assumption that the pollutant and the background proceed by the same biological mechanism. In this paper we show that the same argument applies to noncancer end points also. We discuss the application to a number of situations: reduction in lung function and consequent increase in death rate due to (particulate) air pollution; reduction in IQ and hence (in extreme cases) mental deficiency due to radiation in utero; reduction of sperm count and hence increase in male infertility due to DBCP exposure. We conclude that, although the biological basis for the health effect response is different, in each case low‐dose linearity might arise from the same mathematical effect discussed by Crump et al. (1976). We then examine other situations and toxic end points where low‐dose linearity might apply by the same argument. We urge that biologists and chemists should concentrate efforts on comparing the biological and pharmacokinetic processes that apply to the pollutant and the background. Finally, we discuss some public policy implications of the possibility that low dose linearity may be the rule rather than the exception for environmental exposures.  相似文献

Intraspecific variation of four agamospecies ofHieracium sect.Alpina was studied using RAPD and isozyme techniques. No variation in either multiprimer RAPD or multi-enzyme phenotypes was observed withinH. holosericeum, suggesting that this widespread species consists of only a single genotype. A low level of within-population isozyme variation was seen inH. tenuifrons andH. calenduliflorum, the origin of which appears to be consistent with somatic mutation. Most isozyme and all RAPD variation in these two species was partitioned between populations. A strong correlation with geography suggests that its cause may be due to polytopic (-polyphyletic?) origin or perhaps to mutation and dispersal. The most variable species wasH. alpinum, in which isozyme variation occurred mostly within populations rather than between them, suggesting occasional sexual events or that the parents ofH. alpinum were heterozygous. RAPD variation in this species, in contrast, was partitioned between Scottish and Swiss populations, suggesting the existence of geographical races.  相似文献

In synchronized Chlorella sorokiniana cells, the NH4+ inducibleNADP-specific glutamate dehydrogenase enzyme (NADP-GDH) accumulatedin a linear manner throughout the first cell cycle. Early inthe following second cell cycle, an increase in its rate ofaccumulation occurred that was proportional to the increasein total cellular DNA in the previous cell cycle. In synchronizedbacterial cells, increases in rate of linear accumulation ofinducible enzymes coincide with the time of replication of theirstructural genes. To determine whether the rate change in NADPGDHaccumulation resulted from a delay in replication of its nuclearstructural gene (gdhN) in fully induced C. sorokiniana cells,the cell cycle timing of replication of this gene was comparedto that of another nuclear gene, nitrate reductase (nia), andof a chloroplast gene, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large-subunit(rbcL), in synchronized cells cultured in NH4+ or NO3(uninduced) medium. The gdhN and nia genes replicated withinthe period of nDNA synthesis and rbcL within the period of ctDNAsynthesis in cells growing in either nitrogen source. Therefore,the delayed rate change in enzyme accumulation results froma process that regulates expression of the gdhN gene after itsreplication. We observed the number of predatory mites (Phytoseiidae:Typhlodromus caudiglans) on the foliage of 20 North American species of grapes (Vitis spp) plus the domesticated EuropeanVitis vinifera, all grown in a common garden. We found relatively few phytophagous mites. The numbers of phytophagous mites were not correlated with the plant characteristics that we measured. We found approximately five times as many predatory mites as phytophagous mites and the numbers of these phytoseiid predators were not affected by the availability of prey. Similarly, numbers of phytoseiids were unaffected by plant gender and, hence, the availability of pollen, another source of food. The numbers of phytoseiids were not clustered according to the taxonomic grouping of the tested plant species. Leaf surface characteristics explained over 25% of the variance in the numbers of phytoseiids. Numbers of phytoseiids were positively associated with the density of vein hairs, the density of bristles in leaf axils, and the presence of leaf domatia. These results suggest that sheltered habitats rather than food availability may limit the numbers of phytoseiid mites on grapevines.  相似文献
