Margins of water reservoirs associated with dams can have high‐frequency tides, promoting soil erosion and nutrient leaching. We propose the use of biocrusts for restoration and ecological engineering purposes, due to their poikilohydric character, to stabilize reservoir margins. We promoted biocrust growth under controlled conditions, testing two types of substrate: native sand and organic substrate. After 2 months, biocrusts grew on organic substrate covering almost all the area, but not on native sand. This fast and easy nature‐based solution for soil stabilization can be used as an environmental engineering tool in highly degraded sites. 相似文献

Aim
This study formally evaluates the ability of three models to use geographical data on species distribution to predict the habitat use patterns of species in heterogeneous landscapes.Location
Species and habitats in the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest were investigated.Methods
Based on empirical data on harvestmen and scorpions, we estimated the strength of species association with preferred habitat and classified them as habitat generalists or habitat specialists. We compared these empirical results with predictions made using data on species range size (model 1), species occurrence in biomes (model 2) and species occurrence in habitats within the biomes (model 3).Results
We used 1,278 records of eight harvestman and two scorpion species that had specific determination and enough sampling numbers to allow safe identification of habitat specialization. We observed the following: (1) the extension of species occurrence did not influence the strength of species–habitat association (estimated by IndVal), which led us to reject model 1; (2) species habitat specialization derived from occurrences in biomes was 60% coincident with the classification derived from empirical data. This value is not different enough from the value expected by chance for these data, which also led us to reject model 2; and (3) species classification derived from secondary data about the habitats used had a significant coincidence of 80% with the empirical classification, which led us to accept model 3.Main conclusions
For correct classification of species habitat specialization using secondary distributional data, we recommend that future studies consider using the most accurate information available on the habitats used by species. Especially for megadiverse and understudied groups, information about habitats used is not easy to obtain, so it is important for researchers and institutions to register and disseminate this information, which could support many other studies.953.

Invasive species are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, due to competition, predation, pathogen spread, and hybridization. The latter may remain undetected and impair the survival of species, due to genetic admixture and hybrid swarming (i.e., interbreeding between hybrid individuals and backcrossing with parental species). The impact of invasive species remains poorly studied in the Neotropical ichthyofauna, particularly when considering the potential for hybridization between native and introduced species. Due to fisheries importance and its commercial value, species of the Prochilodus genus have been introduced to other catchments in Brazil. Here, we evaluate the introduction of non-native Prochilodus species and the potential effect of hybridization with the native migratory fish P. hartii. To evaluate possible introgression of Prochilodus spp. to P. hartii in the Jequitinhonha river basin (JRB), we employed a morphogenetic approach, analysing 219 specimens sampled from a broad extent of the river basin. Morphological analyses using meristic characters were incongruent with molecular identification by DNA barcoding (COI) in 22.83% of the analysed specimens. Haplotypes from three non-native species (P. argenteus, P. costatus, and P. lineatus) were recovered from specimens morphologically identified as P. hartii. Hybridization between P. hartii and introduced species was confirmed using co-dominant nuclear microsatellite markers. We observed a pronounced introgression pattern in this Neotropical basin, and paradoxically, despite being one of the most abundant migratory species native to the JRB, due to ongoing levels of introgression, P. hartii’s genetic integrity and conservation might be affected. 相似文献

The accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAG) is a common feature among actinobacteria belonging to Rhodococcus genus. Some rhodococcal species are able to produce significant amounts of those lipids from different single substrates, such as glucose, gluconate or hexadecane. In this study we analyzed the ability of different species to produce lipids from olive oil mill wastes (OMW), and the possibility to enhance lipid production by genetic engineering. OMW base medium prepared from alperujo, which exhibited high values of chemical oxygen demand (127,000 mg/l) and C/N ratio (508), supported good growth and TAG production by some rhodococci. R. opacus, R. wratislaviensis and R. jostii were more efficient at producing cell biomass (2.2–2.7 g/l) and lipids (77–83% of CDW, 1.8–2.2 g/l) from OMW than R. fascians, R. erythropolis and R. equi (1.1–1.6 g/l of cell biomass and 7.1–14.0% of CDW, 0.1–0.2 g/l of lipids). Overexpression of a gene coding for a fatty acid importer in R. jostii RHA1 promoted an increase of 2.2 fold of cellular biomass value with a concomitant increase in lipids production during cultivation of cells in OMW. This study demonstrates that the bioconversion of OMW to microbial lipids is feasible using more robust rhodococal strains. The efficiency of this bioconversion can be significantly enhanced by engineering strategies. 相似文献

Growth and development are vital processes in the life cycles of plants. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroids that when exogenously applied can regulate several biological responses. The aim of this research was to investigate the possible interferences caused by the exogenous application of BR on growth and metabolism using two genotypes of the DWARF gene, MT-d and MT-D, that are BR-deficient and BR-efficient, respectively. The experiment had four treatments with two genotypes (BR-efficient and BR-deficient) and two levels of brassinosteroids (0 and 100 nM BR, described as ??BR and +?BR, respectively). This study revealed that the exogenous application of BR promoted improvement in growth, inducing increases in all variables of both genotypes evaluated. In general, BR-deficient plants sprayed with BR had effects more intense, confirming the benefits of this steroid on photosynthetic apparatus and gas exchange. The changes in the anatomical characteristics of the leaf are related to the contribution of BR on the influx and consequent fixation of CO2. In addition, modifications related to root anatomy occurred as a result of the BR action with the purpose of increasing the root protection and absorption of water and nutrients. Increases in photosynthetic pigments suggest that the role of BR is linked with chlorophyll biosynthesis and the maintenance of chloroplast integrity, resulting from associations with the increases found in the activities of antioxidant enzymes that modulate the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. 相似文献
