The genus Gracilaria is one of the most important sources of agar in the world. In Brazil, Gracilaria birdiae is the main commercially exploited species; however, overexploitation has contributed to the depletion of natural beds. In order to obtain more information so as to consolidate G. birdiae cultivation, studies under laboratory (indoor and outdoor) and field (sea and shrimp pond) conditions were conducted to evaluate the effects of fertilizer pulses on biomass and relative growth rate (RGR) of this species. The following nutrient sources used were (T1) shrimp-pond effluent, (T2) fertilizer for aquarium plants (Mbreda), and (T3) fertilizer extract of Ascophyllum nodosum (Acadian). Significant differences for growth were recorded over time for all treatments in both outdoor and field conditions (p < 0.001). The highest RGRs were recorded for treatments that used pulses of commercial fertilizers (T2 and T3) and the lowest for treatment using shrimp-pond effluent pulses (T1). The analysis of the nutrient content in tissue also showed a relationship between growth and nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation in the algal tissues. The N/P ratio indicated a significant effect on the growth of G. birdiae and the highest RGRs were registered for seedlings with a N/P ratio ≥16 (T2 and T3). In conclusion, the best results were recorded for the Mbreda and Acadian commercial fertilizers. However, although no significant differences were detected between growth and the two fertilizers (T2 and T3), the seedlings cultivated under Acadian pulses showed a better performance against environmental stress caused by reduced salinity. 相似文献

In South America, the order Atheriniformes includes the monophyletic genus Odontesthes with 20 species that inhabit freshwater, estuarine and coastal environments. Pejerrey Odontesthes argentinensis is widely distributed in coastal and estuarine areas of the Atlantic Ocean and is known to foray into estuaries of river systems, particularly in conditions of elevated salinity. However, to our knowledge, a landlocked self-sustaining population has never been recorded. In this study, we examined the pejerrey population of Salada de Pedro Luro Lake (south-east of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) to clarify its taxonomic identity. An integrative taxonomic analysis based on traditional meristic, landmark-based morphometrics and genetic techniques suggests that the Salada de Pedro Luro pejerrey population represents a novel case of physiological and morphological adaptation of a marine pejerrey species to a landlocked environment and emphasises the environmental plasticity of this group of fishes. 相似文献

Giant water bugs (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) are key predators in freshwater ecosystems and have been reported to feed on several species of vertebrates, including fishes, amphibians and reptiles. Here, we report the opportunistic predation of an adult female vesper bat (Afronycteris nana) by a giant water bug (Lethocerus cordofanus) in a temporary pond in a rice paddy in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. Land use intensification may create habitats that organisms perceive as suitable, but where reproduction or survival is insufficient to maintain self-sustaining populations. Such conditions may qualify as ecological traps, but their existence is often hard to prove. Here, we provide a practical framework to evaluate a potential ecological trap resulting from mismatch between habitat preferences and predation risk, focusing on ground-nesting farmland birds of conservation concern. The framework is based on species-specific associations with safe or unsafe habitat types (i.e. field and landscape types with high or low nest survival), and the occurrence of risk avoidance (i.e. negative responses to predator abundances or to nest failure rates after controlling for habitat effects). Bird densities were far more influenced by field characteristics than landscape context. Corn bunting and fan-tailed warbler were associated with tall swards (safe habitats), and did not show risk avoidance. Tawny pipit and and Galerida larks were associated with short swards (unsafe habitats), with the former avoiding fields with high nest predation rates, and the later avoiding high mongoose abundances. Short-toed lark was associated with fields with short swards and low nest trampling rates. Results suggest that short-toed lark may be the most vulnerable to ecological trapping, because it nests on unsafe habitats and did not show predation risk avoidance. Our approach provides a practical first step to infer vulnerability to a potential ecological trap, though further research is needed to confirm this effect. Management actions increasing nest survival in short sward fields will likely favour grassland bird conservation in intensive Mediterranean farmland. 相似文献

Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by the extracellular deposition of the transport protein transthyretin (TTR) as amyloid fibrils. Despite the progress achieved in recent years, understanding why different TTR residue substitutions lead to different clinical manifestations remains elusive. Here, we studied the molecular basis of disease-causing missense mutations affecting residues R34 and K35. R34G and K35T variants cause vitreous amyloidosis, whereas R34T and K35N mutations result in amyloid polyneuropathy and restrictive cardiomyopathy. All variants are more sensitive to pH-induced dissociation and amyloid formation than the wild-type (WT)-TTR counterpart, specifically in the variants deposited in the eyes amyloid formation occurs close to physiological pHs. Chemical denaturation experiments indicate that all the mutants are less stable than WT-TTR, with the vitreous amyloidosis variants, R34G and K35T, being highly destabilized. Sequence-induced stabilization of the dimer–dimer interface with T119M rendered tetramers containing R34G or K35T mutations resistant to pH-induced aggregation. Because R34 and K35 are among the residues more distant to the TTR interface, their impact in this region is therefore theorized to occur at long range. The crystal structures of double mutants, R34G/T119M and K35T/T119M, together with molecular dynamics simulations indicate that their strong destabilizing effect is initiated locally at the BC loop, increasing its flexibility in a mutation-dependent manner. Overall, the present findings help us to understand the sequence-dynamic-structural mechanistic details of TTR amyloid aggregation triggered by R34 and K35 variants and to link the degree of mutation-induced conformational flexibility to protein aggregation propensity. 相似文献

The relationship between the variables of reef fish community structure (fish richness, fish diversity and total number of fishes) and those of habitat complexity (total surface area, substratum diversity, topographic complexity, number of holes, percent cover of turf algae, zoanthids, millepores, massive corals, bare rock, encrusting calcareous algae, urchins, other sessile organisms and Sargassum) were examined on three different rocky shores (FA, FB and FT) at Arraial do Cabo, a tropical region located on Brazilian southeastern coast (23° S, 42° W). Fish abundance and vertical distribution were assessed by a visual census technique using strip transects. Percentage cover of benthic organisms and other substratum types were calculated by replicated transects using a chain laid down on the substratum. Topographic complexity was determined by the chain link method and number of holes were estimated by direct counts on replicated transects. More than 91 fishes belonging to 37 families were seen in all study sites during one year of visual census effort. FA and FB sites had similar fish community structure and habitat complexity characteristics, while FT showed different habitat characteristics and higher fish diversity and richness, plus total number of fishes. Vertical distribution of fishes along the rocky shores studied seemed to be predictable and was determined by factors such as feeding habits and behavior, availability of refuges and social interactions. The habitat variables that best explained the higher diversity and number of fishes observed in FT site were total surface area of rocky shores and the abundance of benthic sessile invertebrates; these conditions were typical of rocky shores more exposed to wave surge. 相似文献

Status epilepticus (SE) is a severe clinical manifestation of epilepsy associated with intense neuronal loss and inflammation, two key factors involved in the pathophysiology of temporal lobe epilepsy. Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMC) attenuated the consequences of pilocarpine-induced SE, including neuronal loss, in addition to frequency and duration of seizures. Here we investigated the effects of BMMC transplanted early after the onset of SE in mice, as well as the involvement of soluble factors produced by BMMC in the effects of the cell therapy. Mice were injected with pilocarpine for SE induction and randomized into three groups: transplanted intravenously with 1 × 107 BMMC isolated from GFP transgenic mice, injected with BMMC lysate, and saline-treated controls. Cell tracking, neuronal counting in hippocampal subfields and cytokine analysis in the serum and brain were performed. BMMC were found in the brain 4 h following transplantation and their numbers progressively decreased until 24 h following transplantation. A reduction in hippocampal neuronal loss after SE was found in mice treated with live BMMC and BMMC lysate when compared to saline-treated, SE-induced mice. Moreover, the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 was decreased after injection of live BMMC and to a lesser extent, of BMMC lysate, when compared to SE-induced controls. In contrast, IL-10 expression was increased. Analysis of markers for microglia activation demonstrated a reduction of the expression of genes related to type 1-activation. BMMC transplantation promotes neuroprotection and mediates anti-inflammatory effects following SE in mice, possibly through the secretion of soluble factors. 相似文献

Darwin and Wallace, in the mid‐nineteenth century, were the first to document examples of natural selection acting on island dwellers. A century later a pattern of morphological differences among organisms on islands was coined the ‘island rule’, which states that on islands species with small individuals tend toward gigantism and large individuals tend toward dwarfism. Selective pressures such as limited resources and increased intraspecific competition modulate the size of organisms in these environments. Of the several works that have tested vertebrates for adherence to the island rule only two have addressed amphibians. This work is the third record of body size variation of island amphibian populations, and the first for the Southern Hemisphere. The islands investigated were once continuous with mainland, and now are isolated as a result of sea level fluctuations that took place in the Pleistocene and Holocene. This study compared morphometric variation in populations of Rhinella ornata (Bufonidae) occurring on three islands of the Costa Verde to populations on five continental areas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We measured 18 morphometric variables of 177 individuals. There was a shift toward smaller body size (dwarfism) in two of the three island populations studied. We attribute this general pattern to geographic factors, verifying the expression of the island rule in tropical frogs populations (insular dwarfism) operating inversely in relation to those of temperate environments (island gigantism). 相似文献
