Abstract. Quercus ilex (holm oak) coppice forests belong to the most representative communities in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to the high sprouting potential of holm oak after coppicing, the dynamics of recruitment of new individuals in existing populations has been largely overlooked. In these forests, the density of seedlings increases in old stands, as a result of the remarkable increase in the recruitment of 1-yr and 2-yr old seedlings, probably due to better environmental conditions for germination. Older seedlings show a tendency towards increasing survival under some degree of canopy closure, since their density appears to be higher just before complete canopy closure takes place. Nevertheless, the reduced growth of seedlings in older stands due to low light levels causes age distributions of holm oak seedlings to change drastically, with saplings older than 15 yr becoming very unusual in these stands. Therefore, a bottleneck of recruitment appears at this sapling stage and prevents vigorous regeneration just before thinning. Present conditions of genet density and management tend to prevent population renewal. Dynamics of the seedling bank reinforce the role of gap formation through small or large scale perturbations in population turnover.  相似文献

A transposable element has been isolated from the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana by trapping it in the nitrate reductase structural gene, which has been cloned from this species. The element had inserted in the first exon of the nia gene and appeared to have duplicated the sequence TA at the site of insertion. It was 3336?bp long with 30-bp imperfect, inverted, terminal repeats. The element, called hupfer, contained an open reading frame encoding a 321-amino acid protein similar to the IS630- or mariner-Tc1-like transposases, and a residual sequence of about 2?kb which was not significantly similar to any published sequence. There are fewer than five copies of this transposable element present per genome in the fungus.  相似文献

This paper presents a kinetic study of the dynamics of the population of two Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains (designated K1 and 522D) in mixed culture. These two strains are commonly used in wine making. The K1 strain (killer yeast) secretes a glycoprotein (killer toxin) which causes the death of the 522D strain (sensitive yeast). Initially, the mixed cultures were realized in batch fermentations. Initial concentrations of killer yeast were 5 and 10% of the total population. The influence of the killer strain on the sensitive cultures was measured in comparison with a reference fermentation. The reference fermentation was inoculated only with the sensitive strain. Results show that an initial concentration of 10% of killer strain affects the microbial population balance and the rate of ethanol production. However the fermentation was only slightly disturbed when the proportion of killer to sensitive yeast at the beginning of mixed culture was 5%. To achieve total displacement by the killer yeast at low concentrations, the mixed cultures were carried out in a continuous system. The results obtained in continuous fermentations with the same strains have shown that a level of contamination as low as 0.8% of killer strain was sufficient to completely displace the original sensitive population after 150 h incubation.  相似文献

In the course of a freeze-cleave study on intercellular junctions in the regenerating rat liver, we observed an unusual array of intramembranous particles located in regions of contact between endothelial cells lining the hepatic sinusoids. These arrays were characterized by an accumulation of particles which resembled a zonula occludens in their linear deployment but differed in that the contact regions were composed of individual particles which remained separated from each other by regular particle-free intervals.  相似文献

The fermentation of D-xylose byCandida parapsilosis was studied in continuous cultures. From the results obtained, xylitol formation seems to be directly coupled to growth of biomass, and strongly influenced by oxygen consumption.  相似文献
