Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae) is a diverse genus largely restricted to the American Tropics that belongs to the alternantheroid clade containing C4 and C3–C4 intermediate species. This research focuses on the study of pollen characters by studying 13 species, representatives of the two major clades and subclades of Alternanthera. General palynological comparisons were conducted with light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) for exine ultrastructure. Twenty-five characters were measured and described for Alternanthera and among these, 14 pollen characters were used to discriminate pollen groups using cluster analysis and canonical analysis of principal coordinates (CAP). Pollen form and ornamentation, pores number, spines length, number of ektexinous bodies and nanospines on the ektexinous bodies on pore membranes, arrangement of nanopores and spines on structural elements, and metareticula form were taxonomically important and therefore used to construct the first palynological key to the alternantheroid clade species. Our study indicates that the seemingly subtle morphological variation of pollen is useful for recognising three main pollen types within Alternanthera. The much needed palynological terminology for describing the mesoporium in the metareticulate pollen of Amaranthaceae is provided. 相似文献

The bat Corynorhinus mexicanus provides an interesting experimental model for the study of epididymal sperm maturation because after spermatogenesis and the regression of the testes, this bat stores sperm in the epididymal cauda for several months. Earlier research conducted by our group suggested that sperm maturation in this species must be completed in the caudal region of the epididymis. One of the major signal transduction events during sperm maturation is the tyrosine phosphorylation of sperm proteins. The aim of the present study was to comparatively evaluate tyrosine phosphorylation in spermatozoa obtained from the caput, corpus and cauda of the epididymis during the sperm storage period. The maturation status of the sperm was determined by the percentage of capacitation and tyrosine phosphorylation in sperm obtained from the epididymis. The highest proportion of tyrosine phosphorylation was registered after the sperm had reached the cauda epididymis during the middle of the storage period. In conclusion, in Corynorhinus mexicanus and most likely in other chiropteran species with an asynchronous male reproductive pattern, epididymal sperm maturation ends in the caudal region of the epididymis and is related to the time that the sperm remains in the epididymis before mating activity. 相似文献

The various effects that temperature can exert on biological periodicities are reviewed. Particular consideration is given to the remarkable capability of many rhythms either to respond in a temperature dependent manner, especially in nonsteady-state conditions, or to behave almost independently of temperature (temperature compensated) in the steady state. Therefore, organisms are able both to use temperature changes as synchronization cues and to measure time at different temperatures. Moreover, changes of temperature can induce transients, after-effects, and eventually alterations in the phase response behaviour, sometimes even the rhythmicity itself. Treatment with low temperatures can, at least in some cases, hold the circadian clock, and considerably reduce the sensitivity of rhythms towards certain drugs. 相似文献

The islands of Bahía Santa María‐La Reforma, Sinaloa, Mexico, host the largest breeding population of the western race of American Oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus frazari). This resident shorebird has a small breeding range restricted to northwestern Mexico and, although listed as endangered, little is known about their breeding biology. We estimated the number of pairs on the El Rancho and Melendres islands, the detection rate of pairs in different habitats, and the relationship between habitat length and number of pairs during three breeding seasons (2016–2018). In 2016 and 2017, the number of pairs peaked in mid‐April (97 and 95 pairs, respectively) at El Rancho, and in early May and early April (50 and 42 pairs, respectively) at Melendres. In 2018, both islands had the maximum number of pairs during mid‐May, with 109 pairs at El Rancho and 42 at Melendres. Detectability of breeding pairs in plots with sandy beach and dune habitats was higher (86–100%) than in those with mangrove habitat (22%). Detectability was associated with habitat type and should be considered in estimating the population size of this subspecies. We estimated that ~ 11% of the total frazari American Oystercatcher population breeds on these two small islands. The density of breeding pairs varied between habitats (range = 0–13 pairs/km). We also found a positive relationship between the number of pairs and plot length, suggesting that habitat availability might be a limiting factor for populations of American Oystercatchers in Mexico. 相似文献

Microrespirometric characterization of activated sludge inhibition by copper and zinc 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We have developed a novel microrespirometric method to characterize the inhibitory effects due to heavy metals on activated sludge treatment. This method was based on pulse dynamic respirometry and involved the injection of several pulses of substrate and inhibitors, of increasing concentration. Furthermore, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of heavy metals (copper and zinc), substrate and biomass concentrations, and pH on activated sludge activity. While higher biomass concentrations counteracted the inhibitory effects of both copper and zinc, higher substrate concentrations predominantly augmented the inhibitory effect of copper but no significant change in inhibition by zinc was observed. pH had a clear but relatively small effect on inhibition, partially explained by thermodynamic speciation. We determined the key kinetic parameters; namely, the half saturation constant (K S ) and the maximum oxygen uptake rate (OUR max ). The results showed that higher heavy metal concentrations substantially decreased K S and OUR max suggesting that the inhibition was uncompetitive. 相似文献

In view of the biocatalytic production of vanillin, this research focused on the lignin peroxidase (LiP) catalysed oxidation of naturally occurring phenolic derivatives: O-methyl ethers, O-acetyl esters, and O-glucosyl ethers. The ionisation potential (IP) of a series of model compounds was calculated and compared to their experimental conversion by LiP, defining a relative IP threshold of approximately 9.0 eV. Based on this threshold value only the O-acetyl esters and glucosides of isoeugenol and coniferyl alcohol would be potential LiP substrates. Both O-acetyl esters were tested and were shown to be converted to O-acetyl vanillin in molar yields of 51.8 and 2.3%, respectively. 相似文献

The gene vermilion encodes tryptophan 2,3‐dioxygenase, part of the ommochrome pathway, and is responsible for the dark pigmented eyes in some insects, including beetles. Using RNA interference, we targeted the vermilion gene ortholog in embryos and pupae of the yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, resulting in larvae and adults, respectively, that lacked eye pigment. RNA‐Seq was used to analyze the impact of vermilion‐specific RNA interference on gene expression. There was a 425‐fold reduction in vermilion gene expression (p = 0.0003), as well as significant (p < 0.05) differential expression of 109 other putative genes, most of which were downregulated. Enrichment analysis of Gene Ontology terms found in the differentially expressed data set included genes known to be involved in the ommochrome pathway. However, enrichment analysis also revealed the influence of vermilion expression on genes involved in protein translocation to the endoplasmic reticulum, signal transduction, G‐protein‐coupled receptor signaling, cell‐cycle arrest, mannose biosynthesis, and vitamin transport. These data demonstrate that knockdown of vermilion in T. molitor results in complete loss of eye color (white‐eyed phenotype) and identify other interrelated genes in the vermilion metabolic pathway. Therefore, a dominant marker system based on eye color can be developed for the genetic manipulation of T. molitor to increase the value of mealworms as an alternative food source by decreasing negative traits, such as disease susceptibility, and increasing desired traits, such as protein content and vitamin production. 相似文献
