The growth and gender in the gametophyte of Blechnum spicant L. were strongly affected by its origin, spore or mature homogenized gametophytes, and also by the addition of plant growth regulators to the culture medium. Spore-derived gametophytes cultured in Murashige and Skoog liquid medium were females and heart-shaped, whereas those derived from mature homogenized gametophytes were shorter and male or asexual (1:3) because of the release of antheridiogen to the culture medium. In the latter, maleness was especially increased by the addition of BA. This cytokinin is a strong inductor of maleness in homogenized cultures; however, even though BA influenced sexual organ formation in spore-derived gametophytes, it does not change the␣female sexual pattern that these gametophytes have. Separate male and female populations of gametophytes were obtained in this work.  相似文献

Endogenous levels of two gibberellins, GA3 andGA20, were quantified in unimbibed Onopordumnervosum seeds collected from two different populations, whichshoweddifferences in their germination capacity. After purifying the seed extracts,gibberellin levels were evaluated by gas chromatography mass spectrometry byusing selected ion monitoring (GC-MS-SIM) adding deuterated gibberellins asinternal standards. The intraspecific differences in germination capacity wereassociated with differences in the endogenous levels of both gibberellins. Thecontents of GA3 and GA20 in seeds with high germinationrate were twice and five times higher, respectively, than those from seeds witha low germination rate, indicating a possible role of gibberellins in dormancyrelease in this plant species.  相似文献

A fluorescence technique has been developed for observing starch granules in plant tissues. Sections are stained with a mixture of dyes which we have named F.A.S.G.A. from the initials of the Spanish names of its components (fucsina, alcian blue, safranina, glicerina, agua), and viewed by epifluorescence microscopy. The starch granules fluoresce greenish yellow, allowing the degradative state to be observed. Cell structures which do not fluoresce are also differentiated. The stain permits identification of other structures when examined by visible light microscopy and is relatively resistant to fading over time.  相似文献

Auxin-induced growth, epidermal cell length, cellular osmotic potential, and cell wall composition of coleoptile segments excised from one normal and two dwarf rice strains were studied 2, 3, 4, and 5 days after soaking. The auxin-induced growth was higher at the early stages of coleoptile growth and decreased with age, being always higher in normal than in the two dwarf strains. A good correlation between auxin-induced growth and auxin-induced decrease in the minimum stress-relaxation time has been found, suggesting that the different growth capacity in response to auxin among the three different strains is due to differences in the structure of their cell walls. In fact, cell wall analysis revealed that (1) the relative α-cellulose content of the cell walls was higher in the two dwarf strains than in the normal one, and (2) the auxin-induced decrease in noncellulosic glucose was high, compared with dwarf strains, in the normal strain, which showed the higher auxin-induced growth, showing a highly significant correlation between the decrease in noncellulosic glucose and the growth in response to auxin. Thus, the different growth between normal and dwarf strains might be attributed to their different capacity to degrade β-glucan of their cell walls.  相似文献

Aim Climate change causes shifts in species distributions, or ‘migrations’. Despite the centrality of species distributions to biodiversity conservation, the demonstrated large migration of tropical plant species in response to climate change in the past, and the expected sensitivity of species distributions to modern climate change, no study has tested for modern species migrations in tropical plants. Here we conduct a first test of the hypothesis that increasing temperatures are causing tropical trees to migrate to cooler areas. Location Tropical Andes biodiversity hotspot, south‐eastern Peru, South America. Methods We use data from repeated (2003/04–2007/08) censuses of 14 1‐ha forest inventory plots spanning an elevational gradient from 950 to 3400 m in Manu National Park in south‐eastern Peru, to characterize changes in the elevational distributions of 38 Andean tree genera. We also analyse changes in the genus‐level composition of the inventory plots through time. Results We show that most tropical Andean tree genera shifted their mean distributions upslope over the study period and that the mean rate of migration is approximately 2.5–3.5 vertical metres upslope per year. Consistent with upward migrations we also find increasing abundances of tree genera previously distributed at lower elevations in the majority of study plots. Main conclusions These findings are in accord with the a priori hypothesis of upward shifts in species ranges due to elevated temperatures, and are potentially the first documented evidence of present‐day climate‐driven migrations in a tropical plant community. The observed mean rate of change is less than predicted from the temperature increases for the region, possibly due to the influence of changes in moisture or non‐climatic factors such as substrate, species interactions, lags in tree community response and/or dispersal limitations. Whatever the cause(s), continued slower‐than‐expected migration of tropical Andean trees would indicate a limited ability to respond to increased temperatures, which may lead to increased extinction risks with further climate change.  相似文献

One experiment was conducted to determine the influence of suckling frequency (restricted suckling (RS) versus ad libitum suckling (AS)) and breed (Brown Swiss versus Pirenaica) on productive performance, follicular dynamics and postpartum cyclicity resumption in beef cows. Twenty-four spring-calving cows (12 Brown Swiss and 12 Pirenaica) were used. After calving cows were assigned, within breed, to the two suckling frequencies (RS versus AS). During the postpartum period, cows were fed 100% of the daily energy estimated requirements. The study was conducted from calving to either day 90 postpartum or to detection of the second ovulation whenever it came later. The pattern of follicular development was monitored daily by transrectal ultrasonography, and blood samples were collected three times a week to analyse progesterone concentrations by RIA. Body condition score at calving was 2.5 (from 1 to 5). Productive parameters were not significantly affected by suckling frequency. Pirenaica cows gained more weight (P<0.001), while Brown Swiss cows had higher milk yield (P<0.001) and thus their calves grew faster (P<0.05). In the present moderate conditions of nutrition, either suckling frequency or breed did not affect follicular dynamics (on average there were 6.5 follicles in emergence, growth rate of dominant follicle (DF) was 1.3mm per day and maximum diameter of dominant follicle was 13.9mm). There were gradual increases in maximum diameter and growth rate of dominant follicle related to the proximity of the ovulatory waves, and they were defined by third order polynomial equations. Postpartum anoestrous interval (PPI) was markedly affected by the interaction between suckling frequency and breed (P<0.001): ad libitum suckling prolonged significantly the interval from calving to first ovulation in Brown Swiss cows (31.8 day versus 82.7 day, in RS and AS groups, respectively, P<0.05), but not in Pirenaica cows (43.5 day versus 32.6 day, in RS and AS groups, respectively, not statistically significant). It is concluded that in moderate pre- and postpartum nutritional conditions Brown Swiss cows were more susceptible to the suppressor effect of ad libitum suckling on postpartum anoestrous interval than Pirenaica cows, although this breed difference did not seem to be mediated by differences in energy balance or in ovarian follicular dynamics.  相似文献

Anthropogenic degradation of the world's ecosystems is leading to a widespread and accelerating loss of biodiversity. However, not all species respond equally to existing threats, raising the question: what makes a species more vulnerable to extinction? We propose that higher intraspecific variability may reduce the risk of extinction, as different individuals and populations within a species may respond differently to occurring threats. Supporting this prediction, our results show that mammalian species with more variable adult body masses, litter sizes, sexual maturity ages and population densities are less vulnerable to extinction. Our findings reveal the role of local variation among populations, particularly of large mammals, as a buffering mechanism against extinction, and emphasise the importance of considering trait variation in comparative analyses and conservation management.  相似文献

Eutrophication is a major threat to coastal ecosystems. Within Europe, the Water Framework Directive (WFD) has established the need of developing methods of assessment. Bulk chlorophyll “a” is used world-wide as an indicator of eutrophication. However, the size structure of the phytoplankton communities has not been investigated, in detail, in relation to eutrophication pressures. This study investigates the suitability of fractionated chlorophyll “a” (<10 and >10 μm), as an indicator of eutrophication. Along the Basque coast (northern Spain) several water bodies, ranging from offshore waters to the heads of the estuaries, were surveyed during 2008. Physico-chemical conditions and chlorophyll “a” showed a distinct spatial gradient. Trophic richness increased towards the middle and inner parts of the estuaries, where nutrient inputs, from natural or anthropogenic sources, together with the residence time of the water are usually higher. In summer, phytoplankton biomass and abundance decreased, generally, in offshore and coastal waters; in estuaries, they tended to increase. The chlorophyll distribution within the two size fractions was coherent with the phytoplankton taxonomic composition. In summer, the relative abundance of small-sized cells (diatoms and non-siliceous taxa) increased. The relationships between size-fractionated chlorophyll and physico-chemical variables differed, when comparing the offshore and coastal waters, with the estuaries. In the offshore and coastal waters, a strong seasonality was observed; in estuaries, an important spatial component was found. Fractionated chlorophyll provided complementary useful information on anthropogenic pressures. However, more research is necessary to utilise this variable as a tool for ecological status assessment, within the WFD.  相似文献
