Reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) was proposed for simultaneously improving two populations and their cross. A modification
of the classical full-sib RRS (FS-RRS) was proposed in which the performance of full-sibs and S2 families is combined in a selection index (FS-S2-RRS). The Mediterranean corn borer (MCB) is the main corn borer species in the Mediterranean and adjacent areas and produces
important yield losses. We started two RRS programs (FS-RRS and FS-S2-RRS) from the same maize population in which the selection criterion was grain yield under artificial infestation with MCB
eggs. Original populations, two cycles of selection derived from them by both RRS methods, and population crosses were evaluated
under MCB attack and under insecticide treatment in three different environments. The objective was to compare the efficiency
of the FS-RRS and the FS-S2-RRS methods for improving grain yield. We found that the FS-S2-RRS method was successful for improving the yield of the population cross under optimum conditions (the regression coefficient
over cycles was b = 0.87** Mg ha−1 cycle−1) without losing yield under high pressure of MCB attack (b = 0.07). On the contrary, FS-RRS failed to improve the yield of the population cross under optimum conditions (b = 0.65) and tended to decrease the yield under high levels of MCB attack (b = −0.26). We conclude that for developing high yielding and stable varieties, FS-S2-RRS is more efficient than the classical FS-RRS method. 相似文献

Background
Fat content and fatty acid composition in swine are becoming increasingly studied because of their effect on sensory and nutritional quality of meat. A QTL (quantitative trait locus) for fatty acid composition in backfat was previously detected on porcine chromosome 8 (SSC8) in an Iberian x Landrace F2 intercross. More recently, a genome-wide association study detected the same genomic region for muscle fatty acid composition in an Iberian x Landrace backcross population. ELOVL6, a strong positional candidate gene for this QTL, contains a polymorphism in its promoter region (ELOVL6:c.-533C < T), which is associated with percentage of palmitic and palmitoleic acids in muscle and adipose tissues. Here, a combination of single-marker association and the haplotype-based approach was used to analyze backfat fatty acid composition in 470 animals of an Iberian x Landrace F2 intercross genotyped with 144 SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) distributed along SSC8.Results
Two trait-associated SNP regions were identified at 93 Mb and 119 Mb on SSC8. The strongest statistical signals of both regions were observed for palmitoleic acid (C16:1(n-7)) content and C18:0/C16:0 and C18:1(n-7)/C16:1(n-7) elongation ratios. MAML3 and SETD7 are positional candidate genes in the 93 Mb region and two novel microsatellites in MAML3 and nine SNPs in SETD7 were identified. No significant association for the MAML3 microsatellite genotypes was detected. The SETD7:c.700G > T SNP, although statistically significant, was not the strongest signal in this region. In addition, the expression of MAML3 and SETD7 in liver and adipose tissue varied among animals, but no association was detected with the polymorphisms in these genes. In the 119 Mb region, the ELOVL6:c.-533C > T polymorphism showed a strong association with percentage of palmitic and palmitoleic fatty acids and elongation ratios in backfat.Conclusions
Our results suggest that the polymorphisms studied in MAML3 and SETD7 are not the causal mutations for the QTL in the 93 Mb region. However, the results for ELOVL6 support the hypothesis that the ELOVL6:c.-533C > T polymorphism has a pleiotropic effect on backfat and intramuscular fatty acid composition and that it has a role in the determination of the QTL in the 119 Mb region. 相似文献37.

In this work, a simple Lotka-Volterra model of intraguild predation with three species is analysed, searching for the effect of the top predator on the coexistence with its prey-competitor species. Apart from the well-known result that the intraguild prey must be superior in the competition for the shared prey in order to make coexistence possible, the magnitude of intraguild predation and the form by which the intraguild predator makes use of the intraguild prey have important consequences upon the dynamics, extending or restricting the possibilities of coexistence. The relationship between autolytic degradation of ß(13),(14)-D-glucanand acid pH-induced extension of isolated Zea mays cell wallshas been investigated using a constant-load extension technique.Acidic buffer (4.5) was able to induce an additional extension(Ea) on cell walls already extended at pH 6.8 buffer under a20 g-mass load, indicating that the additional extension (Ea)was the parameter that better represented the effect of thedifferent treatments on the mechanical properties of maize coleoptilecell walls. The additional extension in response to acidic pHwas higher when cell walls had been previously autolysed for24 h at pH 5.5. Furthermore, the acid-pH effect was dependenton the presence during the constant load extension of some thermo-labilefactors, suggesting the participation of expansins. Acid pHincreased Ea of native cell walls through an increase in theplastic extension (Ep) in agreement with a one step mechanismleading directly to irreversible (plastic) wall extension assuggested by Cosgrove (1977). The autolytic degradation of ß(13),(14)-D-glucan was also able to modify the mechanicalproperties of maize coleoptile cell walls increasing its elasticextension (Ee) in response to pH 4.5 buffer but that modificationonly leads to an increase in wall extension when expansins areactive, suggesting a cooperation between ß-glucanturnover and expansin action. The number of genetic studies that use preserved specimens as sources of DNA has been steadily increasing during the last few years. Therefore, selecting the sources that are more likely to provide a suitable amount of DNA of enough quality to be amplified and at the minimum cost to the original specimen is an important step for future research. We have compared different types of tissue (hides vs. bones) from museum specimens of Iberian lynx and multiple alternative sources within each type (skin, footpad, footpad powder, claw, diaphysis, maxilloturbinal bone, mastoid process and canine) for DNA yield and probability of amplification of both mitochondrial and nuclear targets. Our results show that bone samples yield more and better DNA than hides, particularly from sources from skull, such as mastoid process and canines. However, claws offer an amplification success as high as bone sources, which makes them the preferred DNA source when no skeletal pieces have been preserved. Most importantly, these recommended sources can be sampled incurring minimal damage to the specimens while amplifying at a high success rate for both mitochondrial and microsatellite markers. 相似文献
