Rhodamine-6G(R6G), a lipophilic dye which degrades mammalian mitochondria, was shown to arrest the division of Nicotiana protoplasts. When albino recipient-protoplasts were treated with R6G and fused with X-irradiated (green) donor- protoplasts, only green cybrid plants were obtained. The mtDNA of the cybrids was analyzed by Southern-blot hybridization. We found that cybrids which resulted from N. rustica (donor) protoplasts, fused with R6G-treated albino protoplasts, had only parental-type mtDNA. When another donor, with N. undulata mtDNA, was used, most of the resulting cybrids contained non-parental mtDNA. Ethylene release by potato shoots cultured in closed boxes was suppressed by the addition of silver thiosulfate to the culture medium. Shoots cultured in the presence of silver thiosulfate produced appreciably more tissue and the yield of protoplasts per unit tissue mass was vastly increased, resulting in an 8 fold increase of protoplast yield per shoot. Exposure of pricked leaves to macerating enzymes facilitated ethylene generation. Leaves of shoots which were previously cultured in silver thiosulfate containing medium generated much less ethylene than leaves from control shoots and this generation could be further reduced by the addition of acetylsalicylic acid during maceration. The capability of polyethylene glycol treated potato protoplasts to produce microcalli was vastly increased by the addition of silver thiosulfate during exposure of protoplasts to Ca(NO3)2 following the polyethylene glycol treatment. The incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) and the frequency of disease-causing mutations varies among different ethnic and geographic populations. The Jewish population around the world is comprised of two major ethnic groups; Ashkenazi and non-Ashkenazi. The latter is further classified according to country of origin. In this study, we analyzed the incidence of CF and the distribution of CF mutations in the general Jewish population in Israel and in most of the Jewish ethnic subgroups. The disease frequency varies considerably among the latter. Among Ashkenazi Jews, the frequency of CF is 13300, which is similar to the frequency in most Caucasian populations. Among non-Ashkenazi Jews, the disease occurs at a similar frequency among Jews from Libya (12700), Georgia (12700), Greece and Bulgaria (12400), but is rare in Jews from Yemen (18800), Morocco (115000), Iraq (132000), and Iran (139000). So far, only 12 mutations have been identified in Israeli Jews, and this enables the identification of 91% of the CF chromosomes in the entire Jewish CF population. However, in each Jewish ethnic group, the disease is caused by a different repertoire of mutations. The frequency of identified mutations is high in Ashkenazi Jews (95%), and in Jews originating from Tunisia (100%), Libya (91%), Turkey (90%), and Georgia (88%). However, a lower frequency of mutations can be identified in Moroccan (85%), Egyptian (50%), and Yemenite (0%) Jews. For genetic counseling of a Jewish individual, it is necessary to calculate the residual risk according to ethnic origin. Carrier screening of healthy Jewish individuals is currently feasible for Ashkenazi Tunisian, Libyan, Turkish, and Georgian Jews. These results provide the required information for genetic counseling of Jewish CF families and screening programs of Jewish populations worldwide.  相似文献

We report and document a new and bizarre case of the male‐above position in the entimine weevil Polydrusus picus. Based on field and laboratory observations, video‐recording of mating behavior, instant fixation of couples, and morphological studies, we found that males insert their endophallus deeply into the female vagina, withdraw the female ovipositor and vagina out of the female body, and keep the posture more than 20 min. A possible interpretation is that the unique mating position has evolved to increase the control over mating by the males. From the female side, it could be regarded as a compromising strategy against unwanted copulations.  相似文献

Behavioral games predators play among themselves may have profound effects on behavioral games predators play with their prey. We studied the behavioral game between predators and prey within the framework of social foraging among predators. We tested how conspecific interactions among predators (little egret) change the predator–prey behavioral game and foraging success. To do so, we examined foraging behavior of egrets alone and in pairs (male and female) in a specially designed aviary consisting of three equally spaced pools with identical initial prey (comet goldfish) densities. Each pool was comprised of a risky microhabitat, rich with food, and a safe microhabitat with no food, forcing the fish to trade off food and safety. When faced with two versus one egret, we found that fish significantly reduced activity in the risky habitat. Egrets in pairs suffered reduced foraging success (negative intraspecific density dependence) and responded to fish behavior and to their conspecific by changing their visiting regime at the different pools—having shorter, more frequent visits. The time egret spent on each visit allowed them to match their long-term capture success rate across the environment to their capture success rate in the pool, which satisfies one aspect of optimality. Overall, egrets in pairs allocated more time for foraging and changed their foraging tactics to focus more on fish under cover and fish ‘peeping’ out from their shelter. These results suggest that both prey and predator show behavioral flexibility and can adjust to changing conditions as needed in this foraging game.  相似文献
