Serritermitidae (Isoptera) is a small and little known Neotropical termite family which includes only two genera: Glossotermes and Serritermes. Despite the lack of detailed studies, it has been assumed that these termites have a true worker caste. A recent study revealed that Glossotermes has a linear development pathway and lacks true workers. Here, we present a study of the polymorphism of Serritermes serrifer Hagen & Bates, a species endemic to the Cerrado ecoregion of central Brazil which lives as an inquiline inside nests of Cornitermes spp. A morphometric analysis was performed based on measurements taken of 11 body parts of 544 specimens of immatures, worker‐like individuals, soldiers, and alates. Sex of specimens was determined by dissection and examination of the seventh sternite. A principal component analysis (PCA) was used to evaluate morphological changes during development. Contrary with previous information from the literature and similar to Glossotermes, Serritermes shows a linear development pathway with two larval instars, two sizes of pseudergates, and a single nymphal morph. Pseudergates apparently undergo stationary molts. Sex ratio among pseudergates is male‐biased, but not as strongly as in Glossotermes. Typical colonies have a single physogastric primary queen and a single primary king. Ergatoid reproductives are relatively rare and some female ergatoids may become strongly physogastric. Nymphoid reproductives were not found. All soldiers are male and bear well‐developed testes. 相似文献

Wistar-derived rats were raised and maintained either on a normal- (25% casein) or on a low-protein (8% casein) diet until the age of 100 to 114 days. Both diets were isocaloric and contained an adequate supply of salts and vitamins. There were gross differences in body, brain and pituitary weight between the two groups. In addition, the brain and pituitary content of β-endorphin like immunoreactivity was lower in the protein malnourished rats, and three different forms of training (50 tone-footshock shuttle avoidance trials; 50 tones alone (habituation); 50 footshocks alone) caused a depletion of brain β-endorphin like immunoreactivity in the normal, but not in the malnourished rats. Footshock stimulation caused, in addition, a pituitary decrease and a plasma increase of β-endorphin like immunoreactivity, also restricted to the normal diet group. Performance in the habituation and in the shuttle avoidance tasks was similar in the two groups, despite the different responsiveness of their brain and pituitary β-endorphin systems to training and/or stimulation. In view of the possible involvement of these systems in learning suggested by these and by previous data, it seems likely that the neurohumoral regulation of habituation and avoidance learning may be different in rats submitted to protein malnutrition when compared to controls. 相似文献

Sepsis, a leading cause of death worldwide, involves proinflammatory responses and inefficient bacterial clearance. Phagocytic cells play a crucial part in the prevention of sepsis by clearing bacteria through host innate receptors. Here we show that the FcRgamma adaptor, an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM)-bearing signal transduction subunit of the Fc receptor family, has a deleterious effect on sepsis. FcRgamma(-/-) mice show increased survival during peritonitis, owing to markedly increased E. coli phagocytosis and killing and to lower production of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. The FcRgamma-associated receptor that inhibits E. coli phagocytosis is FcgammaRIII (also called CD16), and its absence protects mice from sepsis. FcgammaRIII binds E. coli, and this interaction induces FcRgamma phosphorylation, recruitment of the tyrosine phosphatase SHP-1 and phosphatidylinositide-3 kinase (PI3K) dephosphorylation. Decreased PI3K activity inhibits E. coli phagocytosis and increases TNF-alpha production through Toll-like receptor 4. We identified the phagocytic receptor negatively regulated by FcRgamma on macrophages as the class A scavenger receptor MARCO. E. coli-FcgammaRIII interaction induces the recruitment of SHP-1 to MARCO, thereby inhibiting E. coli phagocytosis. Thus, by binding FcgammaRIII, E. coli triggers an inhibitory FcRgamma pathway that both impairs MARCO-mediated bacterial clearance and activates TNF-alpha secretion. 相似文献

We tested if subalpine heath vegetation in northern Italy recovered after experimental perturbation of soil nutrient availability
(fertilization) and species composition (removal of co-dominant dwarf shrubs). Species cover was assessed non-destructively
before the start of the treatments (1995), at the end of the treatments (1999) and 4 years after the treatments ended (2003).
Shrub removal had rather modest effects on heath vegetation, except for mosses which decreased significantly in removal plots.
Fertilization decreased the cover of shrubs, mosses, and some graminoids but increased the cover of Festuca rubra. Fertilization converted heath to grassland, but the response of graminoid species was individualistic. Fertilization decreased
vascular species richness and evenness, probably through negative effects of shading and litter accumulation on plant growth
or recruitment. The vegetation had not recovered completely 4 years after the perturbations had stopped. This suggests that,
in contrast to rapid responses to species removal and fertilization, recovery from these perturbations was rather slow, presumably
because recovery was affected by long-term biotic interactions and species controls on ecosystem properties. 相似文献

Apoptosis is a physiological method of cell death commonly referred to as programmed cell death. However, non-apoptotic programmed cell death, such as autophagy and programmed necrosis, has been characterized by morphological criteria. In view of the human therapeutic use of DEX, and considering that no difference in the number and/or affinity of glucocorticoid receptors in activated and non-activated lymphocytes has been reported, we decided to evaluate the effect of DEX on fresh peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Transmission electron microscopy showed that DEX can significantly induce apoptosis in non-activated PBMC. It was also observed by transmission electron microscopy that, independently of DEX treatment, PBMC also died by a process marked by extreme vacuolization and increase in cellular volume; these cells were erroneously classified as viable by flow cytometry using the 7-AAD assay. It is concluded that the DEX pro-apoptotic effect is not restricted to activated PBMC and, therefore, DEX-induced apoptosis could play either homeostatic (activated PBMC) or immunosuppressive (non-activated PBMC) roles. 相似文献

The hierarchical branching nature of river networks can have a strong influence on the assembly of freshwater communities. This unique structure has spurred the development of the network position hypothesis (NPH), which states that the strength of different assembly processes depends on the community position in the river network. Specifically, it predicts that 1) headwater communities should be exclusively controlled by the local environment given that they are more isolated and environmentally heterogeneous relative to downstream reaches. In contrast, 2) downstream communities should be regulated by both environmental and dispersal processes due to increased connectivity given their central position in the riverscape. Although intuitive, the NPH has only been evaluated on a few catchments and it is not yet clear whether its predictions are generalizable. To fill this gap, we tested the NPH on river dwelling fishes using an extensive dataset from 28 French catchments. Stream and climatic variables were assembled to characterize environmental conditions and graph theory was applied on river networks to create spatial variables. We tested both predictions using variation partitioning analyses separately for headwater and downstream sites in each catchment. Only 10 catchments supported both predictions, 11 failed to support at least one of them, while in 7 the NPH was partially supported given that spatial variables were also significant for headwater communities. We then assembled a dataset at the catchment scale (e.g. topography, environmental heterogeneity, network connectivity) and applied a classification tree analysis (CTA) to determine which regional property could explain these results. The CTA showed that the NPH was not supported in catchments with high heterogeneity in connectivity among sites. In more homogeneously connected catchments, the NPH was only supported when headwaters were more environmentally heterogeneous than downstream sites. Chemical investigation of the CH2Cl2 crude extract from the brown alga Canistrocarpus cervicornis (Dictyotaceae) led to isolation of one new ( 1 ) and four previously reported dolastane diterpenes ( 2 – 5 ). Their structures were characterized by 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR spectroscopic techniques, including a full single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis for 1, 2 , and 4 . In addition, the new structure 1 was assayed as chemical defense inhibiting the feeding by the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus. Obstructions to replication fork progression, referred to collectively as DNA replication stress, challenge genome stability. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, cells lacking RTT107 or SLX4 show genome instability and sensitivity to DNA replication stress and are defective in the completion of DNA replication during recovery from replication stress. We demonstrate that Slx4 is recruited to chromatin behind stressed replication forks, in a region that is spatially distinct from that occupied by the replication machinery. Slx4 complex formation is nucleated by Mec1 phosphorylation of histone H2A, which is recognized by the constitutive Slx4 binding partner Rtt107. Slx4 is essential for recruiting the Mec1 activator Dpb11 behind stressed replication forks, and Slx4 complexes are important for full activity of Mec1. We propose that Slx4 complexes promote robust checkpoint signaling by Mec1 by stably recruiting Dpb11 within a discrete domain behind the replication fork, during DNA replication stress. 相似文献

most main squamate lineages and single species of crocodiles and turtles. In all but one case, the Z chromosome was conserved
intact despite very ancient divergence of sauropsid lineages. Furthermore, the probe painted an autosomal region in seven
species from our sample with characterized sex chromosomes, and this provides evidence against an ancestral avian-like system
of sex determination in Squamata. The avian Z chromosome synteny is, therefore, conserved albeit it is not a sex chromosome
