Summary In Strong A female mice, the Ehrlich ascites tumor inoculated into the peritoneal cavity grows exponentially for the first 7 days with a doubling time of about 36 hours. The tumor enters then into a late stage during which the number of tumor cells in the peritoneal cavity does not increase. The uptake of intraperitoneally injected thymidine decreases from the exponential to the late stage, mostly because of a decrease in the fraction of cells in DNA synthesis. During the exponential phase, the uptake of thymidine is a function of the amount of radioactive thymidine injected per tumor cell, the utilization decreasing with increasing cell dose. The uptake of intraperitoneally injected cytidine decreases slightly with time after inoculation although the fraction of tumor cells in RNA synthesis remains constant.Dedicated to Professor Friedrich Wassermann with admiration and affection on the occasion of his 80th birthday.This investigation was supported by U.S.P.H.S. The host suitability of the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), for development of Biosteres arisanus (Sonan), a braconid parasitoid, was compared with three other fruit fly species, namely, Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Weidemann, melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquilett, and Malaysian fruit fly, Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel). In addition, effects of five different fruit species, namely, Carica papaya L. (solo papaya), Musa sapientum (L.) O. Ktze. (apple banana), Mangifera indica (L.) (Haden mango), Terminalia catappa (L.) (false kamani), and Citrus aurantiifolia (Christman) Swingle (common lime), on the parasitization rate of B. dorsalis and sex ratio of parasitoid progenies were evaluated. Effects of host egg to female B. arisanus ratios on parasitoid progeny yields were likewise determined. The host suitability of fruit flies for development of B. arisanus was ranked as: B. dorsalis>C. capitata=B. latifrons=B. cucurbitae. Based on percent parasitization of B. dorsalis, preference of B. arisanus females for host eggs varied with fruit species, however, preferential oviposition displayed by female parasitoids did not influence sex ratios of subsequent parasitoid progenies. Increases in host egg to female parasitoid ratios of 5:1, 10:1, 20:1, 25:1, and 30:1 corresponded with increases in parasitoid progeny yield reaching a plateau at 20:1. 相似文献

In the setting of an aerobiological study of confined environments and environmental prevention of nosocomial infections, aerobiological monitoring of 22 areas in Montescano Medical Rehabilitation Centre (Pavia) was performed in three different months: February, May, and August, 1994. A Lanzoni 3000 spore trap was used for the monitoring. Examination of the results showed that, in the environments monitored, the indoor presence of fungi increased progressively over the three periods considered. The behaviour of individual genera of fungi differed. In the winter periodPenicillium andAspergillus were the most commonly encountered genera.Cladosporium was the dominant genus from the spring to the summer while the yeasts had their maximum counts in the spring morning. The use of air conditioning, combined with the low air exchange between outdoors and indoors in some of the environments certainly played a part in the low concentrations of these latter aerofungi. 相似文献

Recurrent ocular herpes is an insoluble problem for the clinician. As cellular immunity plays an important role in controlling
herpes relapses, and other studies have shown the efficacy of HSV-specific transfer factor (TF) for the treatment of herpes
patients, an open clinical trial was undertaken in 134 patients (71 keratitis, 29 kerato-uveitis, 34 uveitis) suffering from
recurrent ocular herpetic infections. The mean duration of the treatment was 358 days, and the entire follow-up period 189121
before, and 64062 days after TF treatment. The cell-mediated immune response to the viral antigens, evaluated by the lymphocyte
stimulation test (LST) and the leucocyte migration test (LMT) (P<0.001), was significantly increased by the TF treatment.
The total number of relapses was decreased significantly during/after TF treatment, dropping from 832 before, to 89 after
treatment, whereas the cumulative relapse index (RI) dropped, during the same period, from 13.2 to 4.17 (P<0.0001). No side
effects were observed. It is concluded that patients with relapsing ocular herpes can benefit from treatment with HSV-specific

Accurate estimates of forest biomass stocks and fluxes are needed to quantify global carbon budgets and assess the response of forests to climate change. However, most forest inventories consider tree mortality as the only aboveground biomass (AGB) loss without accounting for losses via damage to living trees: branchfall, trunk breakage, and wood decay. Here, we use ~151,000 annual records of tree survival and structural completeness to compare AGB loss via damage to living trees to total AGB loss (mortality + damage) in seven tropical forests widely distributed across environmental conditions. We find that 42% (3.62 Mg ha−1 year−1; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.36–5.25) of total AGB loss (8.72 Mg ha−1 year−1; CI 5.57–12.86) is due to damage to living trees. Total AGB loss was highly variable among forests, but these differences were mainly caused by site variability in damage-related AGB losses rather than by mortality-related AGB losses. We show that conventional forest inventories overestimate stand-level AGB stocks by 4% (1%–17% range across forests) because assume structurally complete trees, underestimate total AGB loss by 29% (6%–57% range across forests) due to overlooked damage-related AGB losses, and overestimate AGB loss via mortality by 22% (7%–80% range across forests) because of the assumption that trees are undamaged before dying. Our results indicate that forest carbon fluxes are higher than previously thought. Damage on living trees is an underappreciated component of the forest carbon cycle that is likely to become even more important as the frequency and severity of forest disturbances increase. 相似文献

It is possible to rationalize the different steps involved in the photoconductivity observed intrans-polyacetylene (t-PA) in terms of a simple chemical model. The interchain electron transfer (IET) and the intrachain polaron capture by neutral solitons proposed by Orensteinat al. may be represented within a simple molecular orbital (MO) picture. An efficiency index for the IET is proposed in terms of the binding energy of the charged polarons and of the electronic chemical potential. The predictive power of the efficiency index is analyzed in the context of the global softness concept. An MO protocol is described to obtain estimates of the IET hopping probabilities. 相似文献

Summary— Using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels stained with Coomassie blue we have studied the protein composition of the nuclear matrix obtained from mouse erythroleukemic nuclei kept at O°C throughout the isolation procedure to prepare the high ionic strength resistant fraction (control matrix) or stabilized in vitro or in vivo by different procedures prior to subfractionation (ie 37°C incubation of isolated nuclei; sodium tetrathionate exposure of purified nuclei; heat shock of intact cells). When the matrix obtained from 37°C incubated nuclei was compared with the control matrix, striking differences in the polypeptide pattern were seen if the protein was obtained in both cases from an equivalent number of nuclei. On the other hand, if the same amount of protein for both the samples was applied to the gels the differences were less evident. Sodium tetrathionate stabilization of isolated nuclei and heat shock of intact cells produced a matrix protein pattern that was very similar and differed from that of the in vitro heat-exposed matrix. Using specific polyclonal antisera, we demonstrate that nucleolar proteins B23/numatrin and C23/nucleolin were very abundant in the matrix obtained from chemically-treated nuclei or in vivo heat-stabilized nuclei but were recovered in very small amounts (B23) or completely absent (C23) in the matrix prepared from nuclei heated to 37°C in vitro. Differences were seen also in the recovery of nuclear lamins, and especially lamin B, that was poorly represented in the sodium tetrathionate-stabilized matrix. The results demonstrate that in mouse erythroleukemia cells the increased recovery of nuclear matrix protein that is seen after in vitro heating of isolated nuclei is predominantly due to an additional recovery of the same types of polypeptides that are detected also in the absence of such a treatment. The data also indicate that in vivo heat shock of intact cells produces a nuclear matrix protein pattern that is more similar to the pattern seen after stabilization of purified nuclei with sodium tetrathionate and differs significantly from that obtained by exposing nuclei to 37°C in vitro, unlike to that what previous reports have indicated. 相似文献
