The presence of drugs and their metabolites in surface waters and municipal effluents has been reported in several studies, but its impacts on aquatic organisms are not yet well understood. This study investigated the effects of acute exposure to the antipsychotic risperidone on the stress and behavioral responses in zebrafish. It became clear that intermediate concentration of risperidone inhibited the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal axis and displayed anxiolytic-like effects in zebrafish. The data presented here suggest that the presence of this antipsychotic in aquatic environments can alter neuroendocrine and behavior profiles in zebrafish. 相似文献

Biodiversity of diazotrophic symbiotic bacteria in the tropics is a valuable but still poorly studied resource. The objective
of this study was to determine if a second housekeeping gene, glnII, in addition to the 16S rRNA, can be employed to improve the knowledge about taxonomy and phylogeny of rhizobia. Twenty-three
elite rhizobial strains, very effective in fixing nitrogen with twenty-one herbal and woody legumes (including species from
fourteen tribes in the three subfamilies of the family Leguminosae) were selected for this study; all strains are used as commercial inoculants in Brazil. Complete sequences of the 16S rRNA
and partial sequences (480 bp) of the glnII gene were obtained. The same primers and amplification conditions were successful for sequencing the glnII genes of bacteria belonging to five different rhizobial genera—Bradyrhizobium, Mesorhizobium, Methylobacterium, Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium)—positioned in distantly related branches. The analysis of the concatenated genes (16S rRNA + glnII) considerably improved information about phylogeny and taxonomy of rhizobia in comparison to the single analysis of the 16S
rRNA. Nine strains might belong to new species. The complementary analysis of the glnII gene was successful with all strains and improved the phylogenetic clustering and clarified the taxonomic position of several
strains. The strategy of including the analysis of glnII, in addition to the 16S rRNA, is cost- and time- effective for the characterization of large rhizobial culture collections

The allochthonous detritus that accumulates in the substrate of streams is used by aquatic invertebrate shredders for shelter and food. Shredders are considered rare in tropical systems, and little information is available about the role of density effects and predation risk (associated with the perception of predators by prey) in relationship to the resources used by these organisms. The aim of this study was to examine experimentally the effects of increased predation risk and of the density of Phylloicus sp. (i.e. of two types of biological relationships) on the processing of the leaf litter of Nectandra megapotamica (Spreng.) Mez. Phylloicus sp. can use leaf litter for case building and as a food resource. The density effect was measured using four treatments that differed only in the number of individuals (one, two, three or four). A second experiment with five treatments was performed to test the risk of non‐lethal predation on detritus consumption (shelter and food) by Phylloicus sp. (T1: Caddisfly; T2: Mayfly; T3: Astyanax sp./fish; T4: Damselflies; T5: Stonefly). A single Phylloicus and one other organism (a potential predator blocked with 0.5 mm fine mesh) were placed in each tank (0.002 m3 volume). We observed a negative effect of density on per capita litter consumption (experiment 1). The low density of Phylloicus may be a natural factor that decreases intraspecific competition. In the presence of fish, Phylloicus showed the lowest amount of litter processing observed in the experiment, indicating top‐down control (experiment 2). In treatments that involved the presence of invertebrates (non‐predatory and predatory), Phylloicus showed the highest amount and an intermediate amount of leaf litter processing, respectively (experiment 2). This observation also suggests that the predation effect is more probable for specific predator–prey pairs. Population density and predation risk in Phylloicus may be important factors controlling leaf litter processing. 相似文献

In this study we show that O antigen is specifically required for the effectiveness of betaines as osmoprotectants for Erwinia chrysanthemi in saline media. Cytotoxic anti-cancer agents induce apoptosis in tumor and normal tissues. Therefore, it is important to investigate which
factors determine these apoptotic processes and hence their likely impact on therapeutic gain. Radiation-induced apoptosis
in tumors may be inhibited due to mutations of apoptotic elements or to tumor microenvironmental conditions arising from vascular
insufficiency. Tumors typically contain regions of hypoxia, low glucose and acidosis. Hypoxic cells compromise treatment partly
because of reduced fixation of damage during radiotherapy and partly because they promote a more malignant phenotype. There
is also evidence that hypoxia may inhibit apoptosis. For some cell types, concurrent hypoxia may modulate radiation-induced
apoptosis while, for others, post-irradiation hypoxia may be required. This may reflect the activity of different apoptotic
pathways. Pathways involving mitochondrial components as well as regulation of SAPK and Fas have been implicated. In addition,
several key stages in apoptosis are sensitive to depletion of cellular energy reserves, which results from hypoxia and low
glucose conditions. There is also evidence that low pH in tumors can interfere with radiation-induced apoptosis, partly through
cell cycle arrest and other undefined mechanisms. Conclusions: Hypoxia, low glucose and acidosis influence radiation-induced apoptosis and thus may be detrimental to radiotherapy. 相似文献
