Background

Limited studies have reported on associations between overweight, and physical and psychosocial health outcomes among younger children. This study evaluates associations between overweight, obesity and underweight in 5-year-old children, and parent-reported health outcomes at age 7 years.

Methods

Data were used from the ‘Be active, eat right’ study. Height and weight were measured at 5 and 7 years. Parents reported on child physical and psychosocial health outcomes (e.g. respiratory symptoms, general health, happiness, insecurity and adverse treatment). Regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, were fitted to predict health outcomes at age 7 years.

Results

The baseline study sample consisted of 2,372 children mean age 5.8 (SD 0.4) years; 6.2% overweight, 1.6% obese and 15.0% underweight. Based on parent-report, overweight, obese and underweight children had an odds ratio (OR) of 5.70 (95% CI: 4.10 to 7.92), 35.34 (95% CI: 19.16; 65.17) and 1.39 (95% CI: 1.05 to 1.84), respectively, for being treated adversely compared to normal weight children. Compared to children with a low stable body mass index (BMI), parents of children with a high stable BMI reported their child to have an OR of 3.87 (95% CI: 1.75 to 8.54) for visiting the general practitioner once or more, an OR of 15.94 (95% CI: 10.75 to 23.64) for being treated adversely, and an OR of 16.35 (95% CI: 11.08 to 24.36) for feeling insecure.

Conclusion

This study shows that overweight, obesity and underweight at 5 years of age is associated with more parent-reported adverse treatment of the child. Qualitative research examining underlying mechanisms is recommended. Healthcare providers should be aware of the possible adverse effects of childhood overweight and also relative underweight, and provide parents and children with appropriate counseling.  相似文献

Hippocampal granule cells are important relay stations that transfer information from the entorhinal cortex into the hippocampus proper. This process is critically determined by the integrative properties of granule cell dendrites. However, their small diameter has so far hampered efforts to examine their properties directly. Using a combination of dual somatodendritic patch-clamp recordings and multiphoton glutamate uncaging, we now show that the integrative properties of granule cell dendrites differ substantially from other principal neurons. Due to a very strong dendritic voltage attenuation, the impact of individual synapses on granule cell output is low. At the same time, integration is linearized by voltage-dependent boosting mechanisms, only weakly affected by input synchrony, and independent of input location. These experiments establish that dentate granule cell dendritic properties are optimized for linear integration and strong attenuation of synaptic input from the entorhinal cortex, which may contribute to the sparse activity of granule cells in vivo.  相似文献

The humification of organic matter during composting was studied by the quantification and monitoring of the evolution of humic substances (Humic Acid-HA and Fulvic Acid-FA) by UV spectra deconvolution (UVSD) and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) methods. The final aim of this work was to compare UVSD to NIRS method, already applied on the same compost samples in previous studies. Finally, UVSD predictions were good for HA and HA/FA (r2 of 0.828 and 0.531) but very bad for FA (r2 of 0.092). In contrary, all NIRS correlations were accurate and significant with r2 of 0.817, 0.806 and 0.864 for HA, FA and HA/FA ratio respectively. From these results, HA/FA ratio being a well-used index of compost maturity, UVSD and NIRS represent two invaluable tools for the monitoring of the composting process. However, we can note that NIRS predictions were more accurate than UVSD calibrations.  相似文献

The formation of foam cells in macrophages plays an essential role in the progression of early atherosclerotic lesions and therefore its prevention is considered to be a promising target for the treatment of atherosclerosis. We found that an extract of the marine sponge Acanthostrongylophora ingens inhibited the foam cell formation induced by acetylated low-density lipoprotein (AcLDL) in human monocyte-derived macrophages, as measured based on the accumulation of cholesterol ester (CE). Bioassay-guided purification of inhibitors from the extract afforded manzamines. Manzamine A was the most potent inhibitor of foam cell formation, and also suppressed CE formation in Chinese hamster ovary cells overexpressing acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyl-transferase (ACAT)-1 or ACAT-2. In addition, manzamine A inhibited ACAT activity. Next, we orally administered manzamine A to apolipoprotein E (apoE)-deficient mice for 80 days, and found that total cholesterol, free cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in serum were significantly reduced and the area of atherosclerotic lesions in the aortic sinus was also substantially diminished. These findings clearly suggest that manzamine A suppresses hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis in apoE-deficient mice by inhibiting ACAT and is therefore a promising lead compound in the prevention or treatment of atherosclerosis. Although manzamine A has been reported to show several biological activities, this is the first report of a suppressive effect of manzamine A on atherosclerosis in vivo.  相似文献

Additional information on gametophytes and sporophytes of Aglaophyton major from the Early Devonian Rhynie chert leads to a much better understanding of many biological and ecological aspects of this early land plant. At least three early ontogenetic stages can be demonstrated, before aerial axes start to develop on the young gametophytes. Only the aerial axes show the essential features of a land plant (stomata, conducting tissue); the initial stages seem more likely adapted to shallow aquatic or edaphic humid than to fully terrestrial environmental conditions. Serial sections of aerial axes of gametophytes and sporophytes of Aglaophyton have yielded new histological and developmental features. These include cuticle structures, stomatal and substomatal features. A hitherto undescribed type of specialized cortical tissue, arrested apices, the formation of second-order axes and bulbil-like organs are documented. New observations on the development of rhizoidal bulges and wound-repair (including conducting) tissues complete this report. The new information provides additional evidence for life (competition) strategies in Aglaophyton, e.g. extensive renewing growth and vegetative propagation. It throws new light upon the adaptive behaviour of Aglaophyton, e.g. protection mechanisms against desiccation of aerial axes. It also illustrates considerable developmental biology of Aglaophyton.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine whether reductive acetogenesis can provide an alternative to methanogenesis in the rumen. Gnotobiotic lambs were inoculated with a functional rumen microbiota lacking methanogens and reared to maturity on a fibrous diet. Lambs with a methanogen-free rumen grew well, and the feed intake and ruminal volatile fatty acid concentrations for lambs lacking ruminal methanogens were lower but not markedly dissimilar from those for conventional lambs reared on the same diet. A high population density (107 to 108 cells g−1) of ruminal acetogens slowly developed in methanogen-free lambs. Sulfate- and fumarate-reducing bacteria were present, but their population densities were highly variable. In methanogen-free lambs, the hydrogen capture from fermentation was low (28 to 46%) in comparison with that in lambs containing ruminal methanogens (>90%). Reductive acetogenesis was not a significant part of ruminal fermentation in conventional lambs but contributed 21 to 25% to the fermentation in methanogen-free meroxenic animals. Ruminal H2 utilization was lower in lambs lacking ruminal methanogens, but when a methanogen-free lamb was inoculated with a methanogen, the ruminal H2 utilization was similar to that in conventional lambs. H2 utilization in lambs containing a normal ruminal microflora was age dependent and increased with the animal age. The animal age effect was less marked in lambs lacking ruminal methanogens. Addition of fumarate to rumen contents from methanogen-free lambs increased H2 utilization. These findings provide the first evidence from animal studies that reductive acetogens can sustain a functional rumen and replace methanogens as a sink for H2 in the rumen.  相似文献

A new halicyclamine derivative, tetradehydrohalicyclamine B (1), was isolated from the marine sponge Acanthostrongylophora ingens, along with halicyclamine B (2) as proteasome inhibitors. Compound 1 is the second example found to have a pyridinium ring in the halicyclamine family. Although the relative configuration of 2 was previously determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis, here we determined the absolute configuration of 2 by ECD experiment. Compounds 1 and 2 inhibited the constitutive proteasome as well as the immunoproteasome. The inhibitory activities of 2 were 4- to 10-fold more potent than those of 1.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates methods for the online optimization of assistive robotic devices such as powered prostheses, orthoses and exoskeletons. Our algorithms estimate the value of a physiological objective in real-time (with a body “in-the-loop”) and use this information to identify optimal device parameters. To handle sensor data that are noisy and dynamically delayed, we rely on a combination of dynamic estimation and response surface identification. We evaluated three algorithms (Steady-State Cost Mapping, Instantaneous Cost Mapping, and Instantaneous Cost Gradient Search) with eight healthy human subjects. Steady-State Cost Mapping is an established technique that fits a cubic polynomial to averages of steady-state measures at different parameter settings. The optimal parameter value is determined from the polynomial fit. Using a continuous sweep over a range of parameters and taking into account measurement dynamics, Instantaneous Cost Mapping identifies a cubic polynomial more quickly. Instantaneous Cost Gradient Search uses a similar technique to iteratively approach the optimal parameter value using estimates of the local gradient. To evaluate these methods in a simple and repeatable way, we prescribed step frequency via a metronome and optimized this frequency to minimize metabolic energetic cost. This use of step frequency allows a comparison of our results to established techniques and enables others to replicate our methods. Our results show that all three methods achieve similar accuracy in estimating optimal step frequency. For all methods, the average error between the predicted minima and the subjects’ preferred step frequencies was less than 1% with a standard deviation between 4% and 5%. Using Instantaneous Cost Mapping, we were able to reduce subject walking-time from over an hour to less than 10 minutes. While, for a single parameter, the Instantaneous Cost Gradient Search is not much faster than Steady-State Cost Mapping, the Instantaneous Cost Gradient Search extends favorably to multi-dimensional parameter spaces.  相似文献
