Economic history shows a large number of boom-bust cycles, with the U.S. real estate market as one of the latest examples. Classical economic models have not been able to provide a full explanation for this type of market dynamics. Therefore, we analyze home prices in the U.S. using an alternative approach, a multi-agent complex system. Instead of the classical assumptions of agent rationality and market efficiency, agents in the model are heterogeneous, adaptive, and boundedly rational. We estimate the multi-agent system with historical house prices for the U.S. market. The model fits the data well and a deterministic version of the model can endogenously produce boom-and-bust cycles on the basis of the estimated coefficients. This implies that trading between agents themselves can create major price swings in absence of fundamental news. 相似文献

Tylophorine and many related phenanthropiperidine alkaloids are extraordinarily potent anti-proliferative agents. Despite their impressive anti-cancer activity, clinical development of these alkaloids has been hampered by their poor solubility and neurological side effects. Although it has been suggested that developing polar phenanthropiperidines will mitigate these undesired properties, the lack of practical methods for the synthesis of such analogues has limited this effort. Here, we present a concise synthetic approach to N-substituted phenanthropiperidines, which enabled a systematic investigation of structure-activity relationships at an underexplored region of the tylophorine scaffold. This work suggests that ring E of tylophorine is essential for the anti-proliferative activity of the 6,7,10,11-tetramethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrodibenzo[f,h]isoquinoline core scaffold. 相似文献

Neuroticism is a robust personality trait that constitutes a risk factor for psychopathology, especially anxiety disorders and depression. High neurotic individuals tend to be more self-critical and are overly sensitive to criticism by others. Hence, we used a novel resting-state paradigm to investigate the effect of criticism on functional brain connectivity and associations with neuroticism. Forty-eight participants completed the NEO Personality Inventory Revised (NEO-PI-R) to assess neuroticism. Next, we recorded resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) during two sessions. We manipulated the second session before scanning by presenting three standardized critical remarks through headphones, in which the subject was urged to please lie still in the scanner. A seed-based functional connectivity method and subsequent clustering were used to analyse the resting state data. Based on the reviewed literature related to criticism, we selected brain regions associated with self-reflective processing and stress-regulation as regions of interest. The findings showed enhanced functional connectivity between the clustered seed regions and brain areas involved in emotion processing and social cognition during the processing of criticism. Concurrently, functional connectivity was reduced between these clusters and brain structures related to the default mode network and higher-order cognitive control. Furthermore, individuals scoring higher on neuroticism showed altered functional connectivity between the clustered seed regions and brain areas involved in the appraisal, expression and regulation of negative emotions. These results may suggest that the criticized person is attempting to understand the beliefs, perceptions and feelings of the critic in order to facilitate flexible and adaptive social behavior. Furthermore, multiple aspects of emotion processing were found to be affected in individuals scoring higher on neuroticism during the processing of criticism, which may increase their sensitivity to negative social-evaluation. 相似文献

The metabolism of two azaarenes, viz. acridine and phenanthridine, by aquatic organisms was studied in short-term and chronic laboratory tests. The identity of metabolites observed in the test waters was investigated with different analytical methods, including HPLC, GC and hyphenated LC– or GC–MS. The Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), one green alga species (Selenastrum capricornutum) and periphyton or bacteria transformed acridine into 9[10H]-acridinone. Phenanthridine was transformed into 5[6H]-phenanthridinone by midge (Chironomus riparius) larvae. The findings indicate that closely related isomers may undergo species-specific biotransformation. It was concluded that keto-metabolites are major products in the aquatic fate of benzoquinolines, which may be overlooked in the risk assessment of parent compounds. This study illustrates the typical problems with, as well as the potency of, chromatographic methods in the elucidation of metabolic routes of organic contaminants. 相似文献

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) serves as a molecular target for novel cancer therapeutics such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) and EGFR Abs. Recently, specific mutations in the EGFR kinase domain of lung cancers were identified, which altered the signaling capacity of the receptor and which correlated with clinical response or resistance to TKI therapy. In the present study, we investigated the impact of such EGFR mutations on antitumor cell activity of EGFR Abs. Thus, an EGFR-responsive cell line model was established, in which cells with tumor-derived EGFR mutations (L858R, G719S, delE746-A750) were significantly more sensitive to TKI than wild-type EGFR-expressing cells. A clinically relevant secondary mutation (T790M) abolished TKI sensitivity. Significantly, antitumor effects of EGFR Abs, including signaling and growth inhibition and Ab-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, were not affected by any of these mutations. Somatic tumor-associated EGFR kinase mutations, which modulate growth inhibition by TKI, therefore do not impact the activity of therapeutic Abs in vitro. 相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are single-stranded, noncoding RNAs that are important in many biological processes. Although the oncogenic and tumour-suppressive functions of several miRNAs have been characterized, the role of miRNAs in mediating tumour metastasis was addressed only recently and still remains largely unexplored. To identify potential metastasis-promoting miRNAs, we set up a genetic screen using a non-metastatic, human breast tumour cell line that was transduced with a miRNA-expression library and subjected to a trans-well migration assay. We found that human miR-373 and miR-520c stimulated cancer cell migration and invasion in vitro and in vivo, and that certain cancer cell lines depend on endogenous miR-373 activity to migrate efficiently. Mechanistically, the migration phenotype of miR-373 and miR-520c can be explained by suppression of CD44. We found significant upregulation of miR-373 in clinical breast cancer metastasis samples that correlated inversely with CD44 expression. Taken together, our findings indicate that miRNAs are involved in tumour migration and invasion, and implicate miR-373 and miR-520c as metastasis-promoting miRNAs. 相似文献

Metal preferences with regard to accumulation were compared between populations of the heavy metal hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens, originating from calamine, serpentine and non-metalliferous soils. Plants were exposed for 3 weeks to factorial combinations
of concentrations of different metals in binary mixture in hydroponics. The nature and degree of the interactions varied significantly
between populations. In the calamine, non-Cd/Ni-hyperaccumulating population, La Calamine, there were no one-sided or mutual
antagonistic interactions among the metals with regard to their accumulation in the plant. In three other populations capable
of Cd and Ni hyperaccumulation, from calamine, serpentine and non-metalliferous soil respectively, there were one-sided or
mutual antagonistic interactions between Cd and Zn, Cd and Ni, and Ni and Zn, possibly resulting from competition for transporters
involved in uptake or plant-internal transport. Significant synergistic interactions, probably resulting from regulation of
transporter expression, were also found, particularly in the La Calamine population. All the populations seemed to express
a more or less Zn-specific high-affinity system. The serpentine and the non-metallicolous populations seemed to posses low-affinity
systems with a preference for Cd and Zn over Ni, one of which may be responsible for the Ni hyperaccumulation of the serpentine
population in its natural environment. The calamine population from Ganges also seemed to express a strongly Cd-specific high-affinity
system which is in part responsible for the Cd-hyperaccumulation phenotype exhibited by this population in its natural environment. 相似文献
