Mortality rates in Svalbard reindeer followed the "U"-shaped pattern, with higher mortality rate among calves and old animals than in middle aged individuals. Assuming a stable population size, the mortality data predict a 16.2% annual mortality and recruitment rate among 6 months and older animals, and a male:female sex ratio of 48.5:51.5 among 1-yr old and older. Both predictions are supported by field data. Female mortality rate increased and differed from the male rate in the age interval 2-4 yr, while the male rate increased sharply and differed permanently from the female rate in the age interval above 6 yr. First and last breeding are thought to cause the increased mortality among 2–4 and 11–13 yr-old females. Increased involvement in rutting activities with age associated with lower grazing activity and depletion of fat reserves probably cause the increasing mortality rate among the 6+ yr males. Maximum life span was 17 yr in females and 12 yr in males. Apart from the unknown but possibly high neonatal calf-mortality, only few animals died during summer or during the rut in autumn. Death among calves, yearlings and most of the females occurred before antler-shedding in May-June. Most of the 2-yr and older males died after antler shedding, which occurs from December among the oldest and during April-May among the younger males. Hence, the major part of the mortality takes place in spring. The lack of visible subcutaneous and femur fat in most carcasses indicated starvation as the major mortality cause.  相似文献

蓖麻蚕Philosamia cynthia ricni血淋巴含两种凝集素,一种凝集兔新鲜红血球,凝血活力被L-鼠李糖和D-半乳糖抑制;另一种凝集戊二醛固定的人和鸡的红血球,凝血活力被岩藻糖抑制.它们在蚕的不同生长阶段及在蚕体各组织中的分布和凝血活力显著不同.血淋巴中这两种凝集素的凝血活力明显比其他组织中高.卵中测不到这两种凝集素活力.本文对这两种凝集素在蚕体中可能的生理功能进行了讨论.  相似文献

The secreted isoform of fibroblast growth factor 3 (FGF3) induces a mitogenic cell response, while the nuclear form inhibits cell proliferation. Recently, we identified a nucleolar FGF3-binding protein which is implicated in processing of pre-rRNA as a possible target of nuclear FGF3 signalling. Here, we report a second candidate protein identified by a yeast two-hybrid screen for nuclear FGF3 action, ribosomal protein S2, rpS2. Recombinant rpS2 binds to in vitro translated FGF3 and to nuclear FGF3 extracted from transfected COS-1 cells. Characterization of the FGF3 binding domain of rpS2 showed that both the Arg-Gly-rich N-terminal region and a short carboxyl-terminal sequence of rpS2 are necessary for FGF3 binding. Mapping the S2 binding domains of FGF3 revealed that these domains are important for both NoBP and rpS2 interaction. Transient co-expression of rpS2 and nuclear FGF3 resulted in a reduced nucleolar localization of the FGF. These findings suggest that the nuclear form of FGF3 inhibits cell proliferation by interfering with ribosomal biogenesis.  相似文献

Ethanol is teratogenic to many vertebrates. We are utilizing zebrafish as a model system to determine whether there is an association between ethanol metabolism and ethanol-mediated developmental toxicity. Here we report the isolation and characterization of two cDNAs encoding zebrafish alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs). Phylogenetic analysis of these zebrafish ADHs indicates that they share a common ancestor with mammalian class I, II, IV, and V ADHs. The genes encoding these zebrafish ADHs have been named Adh8a and Adh8b by the nomenclature committee. Both genes were genetically mapped to chromosome 13. The 1450-bp Adh8a is 82, 73, 72, and 72% similar at the amino acid level to the Baltic cod ADH8 (previously named ADH1), the human ADH1B2, the mouse ADH1, and the rat ADH1, respectively. Also, the 1484-bp Adh8b is 77, 68, 67, and 66% similar at the amino acid level to the Baltic cod ADH8, the human ADH1B2, the mouse ADH1, and the rat ADH1, respectively. ADH8A and ADH8B share 86% amino acid similarity. To characterize the functional properties of ADH8A and ADH8B, recombinant proteins were purified from SF-9 insect cells. Kinetic studies demonstrate that ADH8A metabolizes ethanol, with a V(max) of 13.4 nmol/min/mg protein, whereas ADH8B does not metabolize ethanol. The ADH8A K(m) for ethanol as a substrate is 0.7 mm. 4-Methyl pyrazole, a classical competitive inhibitor of class I ADH, failed to inhibit ADH8A. ADH8B has the capacity to efficiently biotransform longer chain primary alcohols (>/=5 carbons) and S-hydroxymethlyglutathione, whereas ADH8A does not efficiently metabolize these substrates. Finally, mRNA expression studies indicate that both ADH8A and ADH8B mRNA are expressed during early development and in the adult brain, fin, gill, heart, kidney, muscle, and liver. Together these results indicate that class I-like ADH is conserved in zebrafish, albeit with mixed functional properties.  相似文献

The microbial communities associated with electrodes from underwater fuel cells harvesting electricity from five different aquatic sediments were investigated. Three fuel cells were constructed with marine, salt-marsh, or freshwater sediments incubated in the laboratory. Fuel cells were also deployed in the field in salt marsh sediments in New Jersey and estuarine sediments in Oregon, USA. All of the sediments produced comparable amounts of power. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences after 3–7 months of incubation demonstrated that all of the energy-harvesting anodes were highly enriched in microorganisms in the -Proteobacteria when compared with control electrodes not connected to a cathode. Geobacteraceae accounted for the majority of -Proteobacterial sequences or all of the energy-harvesting anodes, except the one deployed at the Oregon estuarine site. Quantitative PCR analysis of 16S rRNA genes and culturing studies indicated that Geobacteraceae were 100-fold more abundant on the marine-deployed anodes versus controls. Sequences most similar to microorganisms in the family Desulfobulbaceae predominated on the anode deployed in the estuarine sediments, and a significant proportion of the sequences recovered from the freshwater anodes were closely related to the Fe(III)-reducing isolate, Geothrix fermentans. There was also a specific enrichment of microorganisms on energy harvesting cathodes, but the enriched populations varied with the sediment/water source. Thus, future studies designed to help optimize the harvesting of electricity from aquatic sediments or waste organic matter should focus on the electrode interactions of these microorganisms which are most competitive in colonizing anodes and cathodes.This revised version was published online in November 2004 with corrections to Volume 48.  相似文献

The spectra of the special-pair cation radicals P+ produced after photoexcitation of photosynthetic reaction centres and initial electron transfer can, in principle, provide important information concerning the function of the reaction centres. Extraction of this information requires detailed knowledge of the spectroscopy of the cations, however. We review our contributions to this field concerning the bands observed at near 2500 cm–1 and 8000 cm–1, and review results obtained from the study of porphyrin reaction-centre model complexes. We also consider the impact of recent experimental developments in these fields. However, our primary focus is to raise the possibility that the observed band at 2500 cm–1 is either a composite of two independent electronic transitions or has both an allowed component and a forbidden component arising from vibronic coupling to intense high-energy transitions. The resolution of this dichotomy will have profound consequences for interpretation of the function of photosynthetic reaction centres.  相似文献

The teleost non-specific cytotoxic cells (NCC) are evolutionary precursors of the mammalian natural killer (NK) cells and an important element of innate immunity. The non-specific cytotoxic cell receptor protein (NCCRP1) is a characteristic cell surface protein with main functions in target cell recognition and cytotoxicity with sequence information available for many species of fish. We have isolated a cDNA encoding the Axolotl homologue of fish NCCRP1 out of limb regeneration blastema and analysed its expression by RT-PCR. Sequence analysis revealed a high degree of homology with teleost NCCRP1 on nucleotide and deduced amino acid levels. NCCRP1 contains a conserved C-terminal F-box-associated domain (FBA) and proline-rich motifs (PRM) characteristic for this protein family. NCCRP1 is expressed in multiple tissues with high levels in limb regeneration blastema. The present work describes for the first time the cloning of the NCCRP1 gene in a tetrapod vertebrate providing a valuable link between fish and higher vertebrates. Our findings suggest the existence of NCC in axolotl and a role of the innate immune system in the processes of limb regeneration.  相似文献
