Carboxylic Acids in Cultured Broth of Sporobolomyces odorus

Carboxylic acids found in the cultured broth of Sporobolomyces odorus AHU 3246 which produces γ-lactones as principles of the aromatic flavor, were analyzed. The concentrate of methylated acids was steam-distilled and in the residue, succinic acid, nonanedioic acid (azelaic acid), undecanedioic acid and 2-hydroxy-3-phenylpropionic acid (β-phenyllactic acid) were identified as their methyl esters by GLC and spectroscopic methods. Phthalic acid and its mono-n-butyl ester were also found, but these compounds were thought to arise from di-n-butyl phthalate, one of impurities of deionized water.     

Structures and Syntheses of Two Phenolic Amides from Piper nigrum L.

Two phenolic amides were isolated from the fruits of white pepper (Piper nigrum L.) and identified to be N-trans-feruloyl tyramine (2a) and N-5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2E, 4E-pentadienoyl piperidine (6a) on the basis of chemical and specrtal evidence. Both compounds were synthesized.     

Structures of Novel Sesquiterpene Alcohols from Chloranthus japonicus (Chloranthaceae)

Three novel sesquiterpene alcohols, shizuka-acoradienol (2), shizukafuranol (3) and shizukol-idol (4), were isolated from Chloranthus japonicus Sieb. (Japanese name: Hitori-shizuka, Chloranthaceae). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of their physicochemical properties and some chemical reactions. Furanodienone (5), scopoletin (6a) and isoscopoletin (6b) were also isolated from this plant.     

Changes in Flavor Components of Onion by γ-Irradiation

The effect of γ-irradiation on the flavor of Onions (Senshu Yellow) associated with sprout-inhibition has been investigated. The relative amounts of propionaldehyde, n-propyl mercaptan and di-n-propyl disulfide in onions stored for 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 days, respectively, after irradiation were estimated by measurement of peak areas of gas chromatograms. It was observed that the lachrymatory character and the pungent flavor had been decreased by γ-irradiation (remarkably at 70 and 700 Krads). In this connection, the amounts of propionaldehyde and di-n-propyl disulfide were decreased with increasing radiation dose and storage period at room temperature (20 to 25°C) and at low temperature (4°C). Moreover, it was observed that the sweetness had been decreased by γ-irradiation, but the amount of n-propyl mercaptan was increased with radiation dose and storage period. Therefore it seems that there is no correlation between the sweetness of onion and the amount of n-propyl mercaptan.     

Metabolism of the Fungicide S-n-Butyl S′-p-tert-Butylbenzyl N-3-Pyridyldithiocarbonimidate (S-1358) in Rats

S-1358 was rapidly absorbed, metabolized and readily excreted via urine and feces from orally dosed rats. Excretion of radioactivity was almost complete within 4 days. The radioactivity was distributed mainly in stomach, intestines, liver and kidneys. It seems that S-1358 and its metabolites do not persist in organs and tissues following a single oral dosing.

Major urinary metabolites of the benzyl-labeled S-1358 were p-(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)benzyl methyl sulfide [B], p-(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)benzyl methyl sulfone [A], p-(1-methyl-1-carboxylethyl)benzyl methyl sulfide [D], p-(1-methyl-1-carboxylethyl)benzyl methyl sulfone [C] and their glucuronide conjugates. Fecal metabolites were S-n-butyl S′-(1, 1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)benzyl N-3-pyridyldithiocarbonimidate [MR], A, B, C and D. These metabolites were also found in the bile. The pyridine-labeled S-1358 gave rise to 2-(3′-pyridylimino)-4-carboxylthiazolidine [HM] and 3-aminopyridine [AP] in the urine, and MR and AP in the feces. Intact S-1358 was a major component of the fecal radioactivity.     

Neutral Aroma Constituents in Burley Tobacco

The constituents of the neutral volatiles from air-cured Burley tobacco were studied using distillation, silicic acid column chromatography, preparative gas chromatography and GC–MS. The isolation and identification of 84 compounds are reported of which 27 are newly identified as tobacco constituents and 4 are new natural products.     

Environmental perturbations influence telomere dynamics in long-lived birds in their natural habitat

Telomeres are regarded as markers of biological or cellular ageing because they shorten with the degree of stress exposure. Accordingly, telomere lengths should show different rates of change when animals are faced with different intensities of environmental challenges. However, a relationship between telomere length and the environment has not yet been tested within a natural setting. Here, we report longitudinal telomere dynamics in free-living, black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) through the recapture of birds of a known age over 2–5 consecutive years. The rate of change in telomere lengths differed with respect to year but not sex or age. The years when gulls showed stable telomere lengths or increases in telomere lengths (from 2009 to 2010) and decreases in telomere lengths (from 2010 to 2011) were characterized by El Niño and the Great Japan Earthquake, respectively. Both events are suspected to have had long-lasting effects on food availability and/or weather conditions. Thus, our findings that telomere dynamics in long-lived birds are influenced by dramatic changes in environmental conditions highlight the importance of environmental fluctuations in affecting stress and lifespan.     

Permanent Genetic Resources added to Molecular Ecology Resources Database 1 August 2012 – 30 September 2012

This article documents the addition of 83 microsatellite marker loci and 96 pairs of single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Bembidion lampros, Inimicus japonicus, Lymnaea stagnalis, Panopea abbreviata, Pentadesma butyracea, Sycoscapter hirticola and Thanatephorus cucumeris (anamorph: Rhizoctonia solani). These loci were cross‐tested on the following species: Pentadesma grandifolia and Pentadesma reyndersii. This article also documents the addition of 96 sequencing primer pairs and 88 allele‐specific primers or probes for Plutella xylostella.
