Quality of life (QoL) is one of the most important outcome variables in the study of the efficacy of interventions with people with dementia. However, its assessment is difficult 1) because it is a complex construct for which there is no unified theoretical or conceptual approach, and 2) because of the inherent difficulties in the cognitive impairments of the people under study. In this work different methods and instruments to this end are reviewed, and related findings are discussed. It is important to take into account the subjective view of the assessed person, as assessments done by proxies tend to underestimate QoL. In spite of the need for further development in this field, it is concluded that the instrument of choice is the QOL-AD, as it is change-sensitive, it correlates with health measurements, it is translated into several languages and it can be administered to people with low MMSE scores.  相似文献

Electron transfer during the reaction of fully reduced bovine heart cytochrome oxidase with dioxygen has been studied at 24 degrees C in the near-infrared region following photolysis of the fully reduced CO-bound complex. The transient spectral changes and kinetics were followed on microsecond to millisecond time scales at nine different wavelengths between 597 and 935 nm and were analyzed using singular value decomposition and global exponential fitting. Four apparent lifetimes, 14 micros, 40 micros, 86 micros, and 1.1 ms, were resolved. The near-infrared spectra of the intermediates are extracted on the basis of a previously proposed mechanism [Sucheta et al. (1998) Biochemistry 37, 17905-17914] and compared to model spectra of the postulated intermediates. The data provide a comprehensive picture of the spectral contributions of the different redox centers in their respective oxidation or ligation states in the near-infrared region and strongly support that Cu(A) is partially (2/3), but not fully, oxidized in the 3-electron-reduced ferryl intermediate.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers, mainly for Polish flora, were examined in order to investigate whether such features as chromosome numbers and polyploid frequencies are correlated with a plant’s origin (native vs. alien) and invasiveness. Polyploid frequencies were estimated using three methods: the 11 and 14 thresholds and the 3.5 x value. Comparisons of the 2n values were done on different levels: in all angiosperms and in dicots and monocots separately. Invasive and non-invasive plants were compared in the entire dataset and in alien species only. Significant differences in both chromosome numbers and polyploid frequencies between alien and native species were observed. In most cases, native plants had more chromosomes and were more abundant in polyploids than in alien species. Also, monocots had higher polyploid frequencies than dicots. Comparisons of invasive and non-invasive plants done for all of the data and only for alien species showed that invasive species generally had more chromosomes and polyploids were more frequent in them than in the latter group; however, these differences were not always statistically significant. Possible explanations for these observations are discussed.  相似文献

We assessed the role of nutrients and disturbance experienced by mothers (maternal effects) in the growth of progeny in a pot experiment using two Plantago species. Photosynthetic capacity, biomass allocation and fecundity were measured. Offspring of plants grown in nutrient poor conditions produced more leaves, spikes and longer leaves and in case of P. lanceolata , they had also higher photosynthetic capacity. The progeny of P. media mothers that had resprouted after disturbance was favored in nutrient poor conditions whereas the progeny of undisturbed plants was favored in nutrient rich conditions.
This study demonstrates that maternal effects may play a role in the success of either a seeding or a resprouting strategy in environments with different nutrient availability. Moreover, we showed that alteration of photosynthetic capacity, even during adult stages, is a mechanism through which maternal plants may impact their progeny.  相似文献

The ever evolving Next Generation Sequencing technology is calling for new and innovative ways of data processing and visualization. Following a detailed survey of the current needs of researchers and service providers, the authors have developed GenoViewer: a highly user-friendly, easy-to-operate SAM/BAM viewer and aligner tool. GenoViewer enables fast and efficient NGS assembly browsing, analysis and read mapping. It is highly customized, making it suitable for a wide range of NGS related tasks. Due to its relatively simple architecture, it is easy to add specialised visualization functionalities, facilitating further customised data analysis. Direct percutaneous exposure is the main route of HCV transmission. In Puerto Rico half of people infected with HIV use illicit drugs. The effects of HCV in the course of HIV infection and vice versa have been extensively studied, but remain highly controversial. This may be due to HCV genetic heterogeneity. Therefore, a complex classification into genotypes has emerged that prompted us to determined how this impacts a population of intravenous drug users (IDUs) co-infected with HIV-1. Using Inno-LiPa II technique, we analyzed samples from 171 HCV-HIV-1-co-infected IDUs and 375 from a general HCV population of unknown HIV or source of infection status. Similar HCV genotype distribution was detected in these populations. HCV genotype 1a was the most frequently in IDUs-co-infected with HIV-1, followed by 1b and 3a. Twenty mixed infections and 5 undetermined genotypes were reported. A reduced HCV viral load was observed in HIV-1 positives with wasting syndrome. Individuals with a high HIV-1 viral load presented a low HCV viral load. There were no correlation between HCV genotypes and AIDS-related event. Patients with genotype 1b showed a higher HCV viral load. Males presented higher HCV viral load than females. Females were predominantly affected by genotype 1a, and men by 1a and 1b. Neither the HCV viral load nor the frequency of genotypes were influenced by the antiretroviral modality. The importance of continuous genotype monitoring is stressed.  相似文献

Summary A new form of ectodermal dysplasia was observed in two siblings, offspring of healthy non-consanguineous parents. The main findings in both children are: hypodontia, abnormally shaped teeth, scalp hypotrichosis, pili annulati, follicular hyperkeratosis on the trunk and limbs, intensified delineation and reticular hyperpigmentation of the nape, and hyperopia; one of the siblings also has astigmatism. As both patients have normal nails and are euhidrotic, this is an ectodermal dysplasia of the pilodental subgroup. The cause is probably genetic and autosomal-recessive inheritance is most likely.  相似文献

The formation of ferryl heme (Fe(IV) = O) species, i.e., compound I and compound II, has been identified as the main intermediates in heme protein peroxidative reactions. We report stopped-flow kinetic measurements which illustrate that the reaction of hemoglobin I (HbI) from Lucina pectinata with hydrogen peroxide produce ferryl intermediates compound I and compound II. Compound I appears relatively stable displaying an absorption at 648 nm. The rate constant value (k'(2)) for the conversion of compound I to compound II is 3.0 x 10(-2) s(-1), more than 100 times smaller than that reported for myoglobin. The rate constant value for the oxidation of the ferric heme (k'(12) + k'(13)) is 2.0 x 10(2) M(-1) s(-1). These values suggest an alternate route for the formation of compound II (by k'(13)) avoiding the step from compound I to compound II (k'(2)). In HbI from L. pectinata the stabilization of compound I is attribute to the unusual collection of amino acids residues (Q64, F29, F43, F68) in the heme pocket active site of the protein.  相似文献

ATP (1 mM) increased the phospholipase D (PLD) activity of rat submandibular gland (RSMG) ductal cells in a concentration-dependent and calcium-sensitive manner. The response to ATP was reproduced by benzoylbenzoyl-ATP (Bz-ATP, 100 microM) and also partly by adenosine 5'-(gamma-thio)triphosphate (ATPgammaS, 1 mM). A similar stimulation was observed in control mice (P2X7R+/+ mice) but not in mice lacking the P2X7 receptors (P2X7R-/- mice). Oxidized ATP and Coomassie blue or the addition of magnesium or nickel to the incubation medium inhibited the response to ATP. The stimulation of PLD by purinergic agonist was inhibited by about 50% by calphostin C and chelerythrine, two protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors. The stimulation of PLD by Bz-ATP and by o-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA), a phorbol ester which activates PKC, were not additive.From these results we can conclude that the activation of P2X7 receptors in RSMG ductal cells is coupled to the activation of a PLD. This activation is partly mediated by protein kinase C.  相似文献
