Ecologists have long investigated why communities are composed of a few common species and many rare species. Most studies relate rarity to either niche differentiation among species or spatial processes. There is a parallel between these processes and the processes proposed to explain the structure of metacommunities. Based on a metacommunity perspective and on data on stream macroinvertebrates from different regions of Brazil, we answer two questions. 1) Are sets of common and rare species affected by similar niche and spatial processes? 2) How does the community composition of common and of rare species differ? The main hypothesis we test is that common species are mainly affected by environmental factors, whereas rare species are mostly influenced by dispersal limitation. We used variation partitioning to determine the proportion of variation explained by the environment and space in common and rare species matrices. Contrary to our expectations, evidence supported the idea that both common and rare species are affected mainly by environmental factors, even after controlling for the differing information content between common and rare species matrices. Moreover, the abundance of some common species is also a good predictor of variation in rare species matrices. Niche differences are unlikely to be the sole cause of patterns of rarity in these metacommunities. We suggest that sets of common and rare species react to similar major environmental gradients and that rare species also respond to processes that operate at a more fine‐grained spatial scale, particularly biotic interactions. We extend the view that species sorting is the dominant process structuring metacommunities and argue that future studies focusing on rarity would benefit from a metacommunity perspective. 相似文献

This paper reports analyses of a capture–mark–recapture (CMR) dataset of 149 Azores Bullfinches ringed on S?o Miguel island
(Azores) between 2005 and 2007, and recaptured–resighted on a monthly basis over a 4-year period (2005–2008) throughout their
breeding range. We examined the effect of time, age (adults vs. juveniles), gender (adult males and females), and environmental
covariates (temperature, rainfall, NAO index) on survival probabilities. The modelling found a high and constant monthly survival
probability (mean ± SE) estimated at 0.96 ± 0.01, similar between both adults and juveniles and independent of environmental
conditions and gender. These findings agree with expectations from island-based life-history theory where relatively mild
conditions and lack of predators should favour high survival rates to compensate for the low reproductive output. The annual
survival rate was estimated at 0.62, which was also consistent with this pattern when compared with survival estimates of
mainland bullfinch and passerine species on other subtropical islands obtained in similar CMR studies. Based on a canonical
estimator, the size of the studied population (mean ± SE) was estimated at 1608 ± 326 individuals. Given that the population
size was only around 120–400 individuals in the early 1990s, we suggest that the high survival probabilities currently applying
to this critically endangered species may have substantially contributed to the recent recovery of this population. Future
research studies on the species’ demography should continue to monitor survival in order to measure the effect of management
interventions currently taking place within the range of the Azores Bullfinch, including the restoration of the biodiversity
rich laurel forest, but also focusing on nest success, which is important for understanding population dynamics. 相似文献

Obesity is associated with numerous risk factors and comorbidities such as hypertension, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. However, numerous studies have reported an obesity paradox; the overweight and obese patients with established cardiovascular disease have better prognosis than those with a BMI <25 kg/m2. This study was designed to assess potential differences in the clinical profile and management of hypertensive outpatients with chronic ischemic heart disease in obese and lean patients that could explain these two apparently contradictory points. Overweight and obesity were defined as a BMI 25–29.9 kg/m2 and ≥30 kg/m2, respectively. Cardiovascular risk factors goals were considered according to European Society of Hypertension‐European Society of Cardiology 2003, National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III and American Diabetes Association 2005 guidelines. A sample of 2,024 patients (66.8 ± 10.1 years; 31.7% women) was included. Of these, 0.1% had a BMI <20 kg/m2; 17.1% BMI 20–24.9 kg/m2; 53.7% BMI 25–29.9 kg/m2; 23.7% BMI 30–34.9 kg/m2; 4.3% BMI 35–39.9 kg/m2; and 1.1% BMI ≥40 kg/m2. The subgroup of patients with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 had a higher proportion of women, diastolic dysfunction, diabetes, dyslipidemia, left ventricular hypertrophy, and heart failure. There was an inverse relationship between risk factors control rates and BMI (all comparisons BMI 20–24.9 kg/m2 vs. 25–29.9 kg/m2 vs. ≥30 kg/m2): blood pressure (BP) control (51.7% vs. 42.4% vs. 29.2%, P < 0.001); low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) control (35.2% vs. 30.5% vs. 27.9%, P = 0.03) and diabetes control (38.6% vs. 27.6% vs. 22.2%, P = 0.023). In conclusion, in patients with hypertension and chronic ischemic heart disease, as BMI increases, the clinical profile worsens as well as risk factors control rates. 相似文献

The identification of CYP2C9 and VKORC1 genes has strongly stimulated the research on pharmacogenetics of coumarins in the last decade. We assessed the combined influence of CYP2C9 *2 and *3, and VKORC1 c.-1639G>A, 497C>G, and 1173C>T variants, on acenocoumarol dosage using a novel algorithm approach, in 193 outpatients who had achieved stable anticoagulation. We constructed an “acenocoumarol-dose genotype score” (AGS, maximum score = 100) based on the number of alleles associated with higher acenocoumarol dosage carried by each subject for each polymorphism. The mean AGS was higher in the high-dose (>28mg/week) compared with the low-dose (<7mg/week) group (mean(SEM) of 84.1±3.4 vs. 62.2±4.8, P = 0.008). An AGS>70 was associated with an increased odds ratio (OR) of requiring high acenocoumarol dosage (OR: 3.347; 95%CI: 1.112–10.075; P = 0.032). In summary, although more research is necessary in other patient cohorts, and this algorithm should be replicated in an independent sample, our data suggest that the AGS algorithm could be used to help discriminating patients requiring high acenocoumarol doses to achieve stable anti-coagulation. 相似文献

The pike, Esox lucius Linnaeus, is a predatory fish that supports important fisheries and could substantially impact prey populations around the
temperate northern hemisphere. Consumption of prey by pike is most readily estimated using the energy budget to calculate
food intake indirectly using estimates of growth rate and metabolism. Resting metabolic rate, R
s, is a particularly important component of such calculations. Here, the available estimates of R
s are reviewed and compared. Scaling coefficients for variation with body mass are consistent between the two studies in which
they have been derived (0.81, 0.82). However, the effect of temperature on R
s markedly varies among studies (Q
10 from 1.73 to 4.80). There is substantial variation in R
s (twofold to fourfold) among studies when temperature and fish size are accounted for. This variation is shown to have a large
effect on energy budget calculations of energy intake and to be sufficient to account for imbalances in published budgets.
These effects depend on age of pike and season; in one energy budget model, a 50% reduction in R
s resulted in decrease of 19–42% in estimated energy intake of pike. Potential causes of among-study variation in R
s are discussed and it is recommended that standard techniques by applied in the future to differentiate between genuine biological
variation among populations and experimental factors.

A variety of pharmacological effectors of signal transduction pathways were used to investigate the elicitor-activated sequence of cellular responses by which yeast extract (YE) or methyljasmonate (MeJA) enhanced production of silymarin in cell cultures of Silybum marianum. As we recently showed that inhibition of external and internal calcium fluxes significantly increased flavonolignan production in S. marianum cultures, we examined whether calcium mediates signaling events leading to enhancement of silymarin production upon YE or MeJA elicitation. Pre-treatment of cultures with calcium chelators, calcium blockers or intracellular antagonists enhanced the elicitor effect of YE or MeJA. The increase of intracellular-free Ca(2+) level also promoted the elicitor effect, suggesting that an external source of calcium or alterations in internal calcium fluxes were not required for the elicitation to occur. Activation of phosphorylation/dephosphorylation cascades did not appear to mediate the elicitation mechanism; the increase in silymarin induced by elicitation was not suppressed by inhibitors of protein phosphatases or by protein kinase inhibitors. No H(2)O(2) generation was detected at any time after elicitation. Also, diphenyleneiodonium, a potent inhibitor of NAD(P)H-oxidase, did not block silymarin production in elicited cultures. From these results, we conclude that S. marianum cell cultures do not appear to employ conserved signaling components in the transduction of the elicitor signal to downstream responses such as silymarin production. 相似文献

We studied two non-neurotoxic amphetamine derivatives (methyl-thioamphetamine, MTA and N,N- dimethylMTA, DMMTA) interacting with serotonin (5-HT) transporters (SERTs) with affinities comparable to that of p- Cl-amphetamine (pCA). The rank order for their maximal effects in inducing both [3 H]5-HT release from rat brain synaptosomes or hSERT-expressing HEK-293 cells, and currents in hSERT-expressing oocytes, was pCA >> MTA ≥ DMMTA. A correlation between drug-induced release and currents is also strengthened by the similar bell shape of the dose–response curves. Release experiments indicated that MTA and DMMTA are SERT substrates although MTA is taken up by HEK-293 cells with a V max 40% lower than pCA. The weak effects of MTA and DMMTA in vitro might therefore be due to their properties as 'partial substrates' on the mechanisms, other than translocation, responsible for currents and/or release. After either local or systemic in vivo administration, MTA and DMMTA release 5-HT in a manner comparable to pCA. These findings confirm that the neurotoxic properties of some amphetamine derivatives are independent of their 5-HT-releasing activity in vivo . It is worth noting that only those amphetamine derivatives with high efficiency in inducing 5-HT release and currents in vitro have neurotoxic properties. 相似文献

Intestinal helminths and blood protozoa are common parasites of lizards. In captivity they can be a serious problem, but no information on treatments is available. In this study, several antiparasitic drugs were studied in Gallotia caesaris (Lacertida) from La Gomera, the Canary Islands, Spain. A lack of efficacy of chloroquine, and a decrease in haemogregarine (Apicomplexa) infection by atovaquone-proguanil was demonstrated. Furthermore, a positive effect of fenbendazole against intestinal nematode infection was observed. In the Canary Islands, Gallotia bravoana and Gallotia simonyi (Lacertida) are included in a captive breading recovery plan. The present results are useful in order to keep these animals in good condition and to control their parasites. Moreover, these results are important for reptiles kept as pets, due to the previous lack of knowledge of parasite management. 相似文献

In human monocytes 100 ng/mL leptin increased both statin-inhibitable free radical and cholesterol production in vitro. In our recent study, we aimed to elucidate the concentration dependence of observed leptin-effect. Following leptin stimulation cholesterol synthesis was measured in the presence of inhibitors to determine affected signal pathways. Leptin at low (10-100 ng/mL) concentrations increased [(14)C]acetate incorporation, whereas at 250 ng/mL and higher concentrations it suppressed cholesterol synthesis. HMG CoA reductase, phosphatidyl-3-kinase (PI3K) and mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) were involved in mediating leptin effects at low concentrations, whereas the cholesterol synthesis suppression was abolished by inhibitors of protein kinase C (PKC) and PI3K. 相似文献
