The Friesner Herbarium (BUT) of Butler University

The Friesner Herbarium (BUT) of Butler University is a collection of over 100,000 specimens built from the personal herbarium of Ray C. Friesner. He and other botanists at Butler amassed one of the largest and most complete collections of Indiana plants. Active exchange from the 1920’s through the 1940’s increased the holdings of plants from other states. Although the collection does not contain many type specimens, it is rich in vouchers from floristic and ecological studies conducted in the first half of the 20th century and published in the scientific journal,Butler University Botanical Studies.     

Endopeptidase-24.11, a Cell-Surface Peptidace of Central Nervous System Neurons, Is Expressed by Schwann Cells in the Pig Peripheral Nervous System

Endopeptidase-24.11 is a 90-kDa surface glycoprotein with the ability to hydrolyze a variety of biologically active peptides. Interest in this enzyme is based on the consensus that it may play a role in the termination of peptide signals in the central nervous system. In the present study, we have investigated the distribution of endopeptidase-24.11 in two nerves of the peripheral nervous system of newborn pigs: the sciatic, composed of a mixture of myelinated and nonmyelinated axons, and cervical sympathetic trunk in which greater than 99% of the axons are nonmyelinated. The endopeptidase was monitored enzymatically, as well as by immunoblotting and immunocytochemistry using mono- and polyclonal anti-endopeptidase antibodies. Endopeptidase-24.11 was detected in both the sciatic nerve and the cervical sympathetic trunk. Membrane preparations from sciatic nerve hydrolyzed 125I-insulin B-chain, and more than 50% of the activity was inhibited by phosphoramidon with an IC50 concentration of 3.2 nM. Moreover, a 90-kDa polypeptide was detected by immunoblotting of sciatic nerve membranes. The type of cells expressing the endopeptidase was determined by immunohistochemistry. In teased nerve preparations, these cells were identified morphologically as myelin- and non-myelin-forming Schwann cells. Endopeptidase-24.11 was also expressed by cultured Schwann cells from sciatic nerve and cervical sympathetic trunk maintained for 3 h in vitro. The presence of endopeptidase-24.11 on the Schwann cell surface raises the possibility of a potential role for the enzyme in nerve development and/or regeneration.     

Ovine trophoblast protein-one inhibits development of endometrial responsiveness to oxytocin in ewes

In experiment (Exp) 1, 12 cyclic ewes had catheters placed into each uterine horn on Day 7 (estrus = Day 0). On Days 11-15, 6 ewes received twice-daily intrauterine infusions of 1.5 mg serum protein (SP) into each uterine horn and 6 ewes received infusions of 1.08 mg SP + 0.42 mg ovine conceptus secretory proteins (oCSP) containing 25 micrograms ovine trophoblast protein-one (oTP-1) as determined by radioimmunoassay (25-35% bioactive by antiviral assay). SP-infused and oCSP-infused ewes had similar plasma 13,14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) profiles in response to oxytocin on Day 11, but SP ewes became more responsive (p less than 0.01) to oxytocin on Days 13 and 15 than oCSP ewes. SP ewes also had greater incorporation of [3H]inositol into inositol trisphosphate (IP3) (+3449%, p less than 0.01) and total inositol phosphate (IP) (+760%, p less than 0.08), in response to oxytocin, than did oCSP ewes (+553 and +168% for IP3 and total IP, respectively) in endometrium collected at ovariectomy/hysterectomy on Day 16. Mean CL weights on Day 16 and mean concentrations of progesterone in plasma collected at 12-h intervals on Days 6-16 were not different for SP and oCSP ewes, but concentrations of progesterone were lower (p less than 0.05) in SP ewes on Days 15-16 than for oCSP ewes. These results indicate that oTP-1 may prevent luteolysis by inhibiting development of endometrial responsiveness to oxytocin and, therefore, reduce oxytocin-induced synthesis of IP3 and PGF2 alpha.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Congenital coronary artery-left heart fistulas: Report of three cases

Of 59 patients who underwent operative correction of congenital coronary artery fistulas from May 1956 through May 1980 at our institution, three had fistulas that arose from the coronary artery and terminated in the left heart. The chief indication for surgical correction in such patients is the presence of symptoms or the development of complications, which include rupture, endocarditis, and congestive heart failure. The principal objective of repair is closure or obliteration of the fistulous communication and preservation of distal myocardial perfusion. Because symptoms and complications tend to occur with age, elective ligation is warranted during childhood, even in asymptomatic patients. The three cases described here, as well as the reviewed series of left heart fistulas, substantiate this fact. All three patients were symptomatic before operation and asymptomatic afterward.     

Analysis of neonatally induced tolerance of H-2 alloantigens

There is a considerable amount of evidence, confirmed and extended by our studies, in favor of clonal deletion of alloantigen-reactive cells in neonatally induced transplantation tolerance. We have demonstrated in adult mice bearing long-standing skin allografts that lymphocytes specifically reactive with the tolerated H-2 alloantigens are undetectable by mixed lymphocyte and graftversus-host reactions, and in cell-mediated lympholysis. In addition, lymphoid cells capable of suppressing the reactivity of syngeneic normal lymphocytes in these assays similarly escape detection. Moreover, putative precursors of T cells specific for the tolerated antigens cannot be activated polyclonally with concanavalin A (Con A), nor can they be identified among thymocytes ofH-2-tolerant mice. Since the tolerant state can be adoptively transferred with lymphohematopoietic cells to adult, syngeneic mice, we infer that transplantation tolerance is maintained by an active process that achieves specific clonal deletion at an early stage in the ontogeny of alloreactive T lymphocytes.     

ABLATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR SURGICAL TREATMENT OF PAROXYSMAL TACHYCARDIA

In this report, the collaborative efforts of cardiologists and surgeons to provide optimal treatment of patients with rhythm disturbances are discussed, along with definitive advances in new surgical techniques to relieve supraventricular tachycardia and paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia. Some of the techniques described are destined to find a permanent place in the surgeon's armamentarium.     

Genetic control and intracellular localization of glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase in maize

Glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase (L-aspertate: 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, E.C. 2.6.1.1; GOT) was found to occur in five distinct electrophoretic forms in different tissue extracts from a number of highly inbred strains of Zea mays L. No major qualitative differences were detected in the various tissues examined, and the isozyme patterns did not undergo changes during temporal development of any given inbred strain. Cell fractionation studies showed one isozyme to be associated with the mitochondria (mGOT), another to be exclusively associated with the soluble fraction (sGOT), and a third to be associated with the glyoxysomes (gGOT). The glyoxysomal form occurs as two electrophoretically distinct variants which exist in different inbred strains of maize. The gGOT variants are under the control of two codiminant alleles (Got1A and Got1B) at the Got1 locus (isozyme5, gGOT). The genetic data and gene dosage effects suggest that GOT in maize is functionally a dimer.     

Tissue pressures and fluid dynamics in the kidney.

The kidney has several characteristics which make renal pressures and fluid dynamics unique when compared to other organs. Renal blood flow is roughly 100 times that of skeletal muscle. The renal circulation consists of two distinct capillary beds in series: a high pressure system in the glomerulus that favors filtration and a low pressure system in the peritubule network that favors reabsorption. The hydrostatic pressure in the glomerular capillary is 4-6 times higher than the hydrostatic pressure in the peritubule capillary so that approximately 25% of the plasma is filtered. The bulk of the filtrate is subsequently reabsorbed by the peritubule capillary network. Micropuncture techniques have been used to obtain quantitative measurements of the pressures and fluid dynamics of the peritubule microcirculation. The net force for uptake of all the fluid reabsorbed by a single proximal tubule up to the point of micropuncture is 21 mm Hg acting over a capillary bed with a permeability surface area product of 2 nl/min per mm Hg. In contrast to subcutaneous tissue and muscle, the renal interstitial fluid pressure is positive. The consequence of a positive interstitial fluid pressure is that normal lymph flow is relatively high and changes in interstitial fluid pressure have relatively little effects on lymph flow.
