BackgroundPatellar dislocation can lead to instability, pain, limited function, and recurrent dislocations. Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction leads to favorable patient reported outcomes, but many patients fail to return to previous activity levels. The purpose of this study is to determine how well patients do after MPFL reconstruction and to determine the most important factors for evaluation of patellar instability following MPFL reconstruction.MethodsAfter IRB approval, a retrospective chart review was performed on all patients who underwent MPFL reconstruction from January 2006 to January 2014 by two board-certified sports orthopaedic surgeons. Patients were then contacted to complete a follow-up questionnaire about satisfaction, functional status, pain, and patellar stability. Patients with at least one-year of follow-up data, a complete data set, and a completed questionnaire were included in the final analysis. Charts of 100 patients were reviewed and 54 patients met all criteria for inclusion in the study. Chi-square analysis, t-tests, and multivariate and univariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the effects of multiple variables on return to activity, satisfaction, and function while controlling for covariates with p<0.05 considered significant.ResultsWhen asked about subluxation, 20% (11/54) reported recurrent patellar subluxation (without re-dislocation). Of the 11 patients who reported re-subluxation, 54% (6/11) reported being highly satisfied (rating of 9-10/10) with the outcome of their knee. Of the 54 patients, 54% (29/54) did not return to previous levels of activity, nevertheless, 31% (9/29) of these 29 patients reported being highly satisfied with the outcome of their knee.ConclusionPatients report high levels of satisfaction even if they have recurrent instability or are unable to return to prior activity levels. Tau protein is present in six different splice forms in the human brain and interacts with microtubules via either 3 or 4 microtubule binding repeats. An increased ratio of 3 repeat to 4 repeat isoforms is associated with neurodegeneration in inherited forms of frontotemporal dementia. Tau over-expression diminishes axonal transport in several systems, but differential effects of 3 repeat and 4 repeat isoforms have not been studied. We examined the effects of tau on mitochondrial transport and found that both 3 repeat and 4 repeat tau change normal mitochondrial distribution within the cell body and reduce mitochondrial localization to axons; 4 repeat tau has a greater effect than 3 repeat tau. Further, we observed that the 3 repeat and 4 repeat tau cause different alterations in retrograde and anterograde transport dynamics with 3 repeat tau having a slightly stronger effect on axon transport dynamics. Our results indicate that tau-induced changes in axonal transport may be an underlying theme in neurodegenerative diseases associated with isoform specific changes in tau's interaction with microtubules.  相似文献

Preliminary screening of extracts of the leaves and stems of four Turraea plant species (Meliaceae) on second instar larvae of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) showed that the methanolic extract of Turraea abyssinica leaves possess good toxic potential with LD50 of 270.7 ppm. Fractionation of this extract led to isolation of a new limonoid derivative, 12α‐diacetoxywalsuranolide (1) and three other known limonoids [1α,7α,12α‐triacetoxy‐4α‐carbomethoxy‐11β‐hydroxy‐14β,15β‐epoxyhavanensin (2), 11‐epi‐21‐hydroxytoonacilide (3), 11β,12α‐diacetoxycedrelone (4)]. The structures of the compounds were established by IR, UV, mass spectrometry and 1D/2D NMR analyses, and in the case of the known compounds, also by comparison with reported data. All the isolates were tested for their larvicidal activities at different dose range against second instar larvae of T. absoluta. They were found to be more active (with LD50 < 7.0 ppm) compared to the reference compound azadirachtin (LD50 value of 7.8 ppm).  相似文献

The repellency of the essential oil of the shrubCleome monophylla (Family: Capparidaceae) and identified constituents of the oil were evaluated against the livestock tick,Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and the maize weevil,Sitophillus zeamais. In a tick climbing repellency bioassay, the oil ofC. monophylla exhibited repellency which, at the highest dose, was comparable to that of the commercial arthropod repellent N,N-diethyl toluamide (DEET). In a Y-tube olfactometer bioassay,C. monophylla oil showed higher or comparable repellency againstS. zeamais relative to DEET at all the doses tested. 14 Compounds were identified in theC. monophylla oil by GC, GC-MS and coinjection with authentic samples. Terpenolene was found to occur in largest quantity (14%) followed by 1-α-terpeneol (10%), pentacosane (9%), (α+β)-humulene (8%), phytol (5%) and 2-dodecanone (4%). The most repellent components againstR. appendiculatus andS. zeamais were 1-α-terpeneol and 2-dodecanone. The overall pattern of repellency activity of theC. monophylla constituents with respect to the two arthropods was, however, different. The potential ofC. monophylla in tick and maize weevil control is discussed.  相似文献

 We describe and apply an interval mapping method for quantitative trait locus (QTL) detection using F3 and testcross progenies derived from F2 populations obtained from a diallel cross among four elite lines of maize. Linear model-based procedures were used for the test and estimation of putative QTL effects together with genetic interactions including epistasis. We mapped QTL associated with silking date and explored their genetic effects. Ten QTL were detected, and these explained more than 40% of the phenotypic variance. Most of these QTL had consistent and stable effects among genetic backgrounds and did not show significant epistasis. QTL-by-environment interaction was important for four QTL and was essentially due to changes in magnitude of allelic effects. These results show the efficiency of our method in several genetic situations as well as the power of the diallel design in detecting QTL simultaneously over several populations. Several bacterial species possess the ability to differentiate into highly motile swarmer cells capable of rapid surface colonization. In Serratia liquefaciens, we demonstrate that initiation of swarmer-cell differentiation involves diffusible signal molecules that are released into the growth medium. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we identified N-butanoyl-l -homoserine lactone (BHL) and N-hexanoyl-l -homoserine lactone (HHL) in cell-free Serratia culture supernatants. BHL and HHL are present in a ratio of approximately 10:1 and their structures were unequivocally confirmed by chemical synthesis. The swrlswarmer initiation) gene, the predicted translation product of which exhibits substantial homology to the Luxl family of putative Nacyl homoserine lactone (AHL) synthases is responsible for directing synthesis of both BHL and HHL. In an swrl mutant, swarming motility is abolished but can be restored by the addition of an exogenous AHL. These results add swarming motility to the rapidly expanding list of phenotypes known to be controlled through quorum sensing.  相似文献
