Austin, G. T. 1979. Pattern and timing of moult in penduline tits (Anthoscopus). Ostrich 49:168-173. Moult was examined in species of Anthoscopus. Second and subsequent prebasic moults were complete. Primary and rectrix moult was typical of passerines, but secondary moult was some what irregular. Moult was largely non-overlapping with breeding, although some body moult was noted during the breeding season. In southern Africa there was some regional variation in timing of moult. Microbial processes have a central role in the global fluxes of the key biogenic greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) and are likely to respond rapidly to climate change. Whether changes in microbial processes lead to a net positive or negative feedback for greenhouse gas emissions is unclear. To improve the prediction of climate models, it is important to understand the mechanisms by which microorganisms regulate terrestrial greenhouse gas flux. This involves consideration of the complex interactions that occur between microorganisms and other biotic and abiotic factors. The potential to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through managing terrestrial microbial processes is a tantalizing prospect for the future. 相似文献

We describe the Hox cluster in the radially symmetric sea urchin and
compare our findings to what is known from clusters in bilaterally
symmetric animals. Several Hox genes from the direct-developing sea urchin
Heliocidaris erythrogramma are described. CHEF gel analysis shows that the
Hox genes are clustered on a < or = 300 kilobase (kb) fragment of DNA,
and only a single cluster is present, as in lower chordates and other
nonvertebrate metazoans. Phylogenetic analyses of sea urchin, amphioxus,
Drosophila, and selected vertebrate Hox genes confirm that the H.
erythrogramma genes, and others previously cloned from other sea urchins,
belong to anterior, central, and posterior groups. Despite their radial
body plan and lack of cephalization, echinoderms retain at least one of the
anterior group Hox genes, an orthologue of Hox3. The structure of the
echinoderm Hox cluster suggests that the ancestral deuterostome had a Hox
cluster more similar to the current chordate cluster than was expected Sea
urchins have at least three Abd-B type genes, suggesting that Abd-B
expansion began before the radiation of deuterostomes.

Nitrate utilization and ammonium utilization were studied by using three algal isolates, six bacterial isolates, and a range of temperatures in chemostat and batch cultures. We quantified affinities for both substrates by determining specific affinities (specific affinity = maximum growth rate/half-saturation constant) based on estimates of kinetic parameters obtained from chemostat experiments. At suboptimal temperatures, the residual concentrations of nitrate in batch cultures and the steady-state concentrations of nitrate in chemostat cultures both increased. The specific affinity for nitrate was strongly dependent on temperature (Q10≈3, where Q10 is the proportional change with a 10°C temperature increase) and consistently decreased at temperatures below the optimum temperature. In contrast, the steady-state concentrations of ammonium remained relatively constant over the same temperature range, and the specific affinity for ammonium exhibited no clear temperature dependence. This is the first time that a consistent effect of low temperature on affinity for nitrate has been identified for psychrophilic, mesophilic, and thermophilic bacteria and algae. The different responses of nitrate uptake and ammonium uptake to temperature imply that there is increasing dependence on ammonium as an inorganic nitrogen source at low temperatures. 相似文献

Lupinus albus andK. angustifolius were grown in the field, harvested prior to leaf fall and the Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, P and Si content of the leaflets, petioles, stems, young shoots and inflorescences determined. Element levels inL. albus parts had changed little from those at an earlier harvest, except in the inflorescences in which most element levels had decreased. Both species accumulated manganese;L. angustifolius only in, the leaflets andL. albus in most parts. The leaflets of both were enriched with iron and this with manganese accumulation in a soil of neutral pH is considered to result from reducing conditions in the rhizosphere increasing their availability to the lupins.
