Percent root length colonization may not be an appropriate measure of root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in all cases. We suggest that AMF will differ in how well percent root length colonization measures the amount of AMF colonization in the root due to differences among AMF in hyphal structure and hyphal aggregation. Although soil hyphal length accounts for hyphal density, we suggest that it does not consider differences in hyphal structure in measurements of external colonization and thus might also misrepresent the true amount of AMF in the soil. To test these suggestions, we measured and compared percent root length colonization and soil hyphal length with root ergosterol and soil ergosterol, respectively, for 21 different species of AMF from three families in a greenhouse experiment. Percent root length colonization predicted intra-radical colonization best for Glomaceae and Acaulosporaceae isolates, while soil hyphal length best represented soil ergosterol for Gigasporaceae isolates. The results show that conventional methods for estimating AMF colonization are not universal for all AMF. Caution is advised when drawing inferences for different groups of AMF.  相似文献

The success of printing technology in the electronics industry primarily depends on the availability of metal printing ink. Various types of commercially available metal ink are widely used in different industries such as the solar cell, radio frequency identification (RFID) and light emitting diode (LED) industries, with limited usage in semiconductor packaging. The use of printed ink in semiconductor IC packaging is limited by several factors such as poor electrical performance and mechanical strength. Poor adhesion of the printed metal track to the epoxy molding compound is another critical factor that has caused a decline in interest in the application of printing technology to the semiconductor industry. In this study, two different groups of adhesion promoters, based on metal and polymer groups, were used to promote adhesion between the printed ink and the epoxy molding substrate. The experimental data show that silver ink with a metal oxide adhesion promoter adheres better than silver ink with a polymer adhesion promoter. This result can be explained by the hydroxyl bonding between the metal oxide promoter and the silane grouping agent on the epoxy substrate, which contributes a greater adhesion strength compared to the polymer adhesion promoter. Hypotheses of the physical and chemical functions of both adhesion promoters are described in detail.  相似文献

The development of selective histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties remains challenging in large part owing to the difficulty of probing the interaction of small molecules with megadalton protein complexes. A combination of affinity capture and quantitative mass spectrometry revealed the selectivity with which 16 HDAC inhibitors target multiple HDAC complexes scaffolded by ELM-SANT domain subunits, including a novel mitotic deacetylase complex (MiDAC). Inhibitors clustered according to their target profiles with stronger binding of aminobenzamides to the HDAC NCoR complex than to the HDAC Sin3 complex. We identified several non-HDAC targets for hydroxamate inhibitors. HDAC inhibitors with distinct profiles have correspondingly different effects on downstream targets. We also identified the anti-inflammatory drug bufexamac as a class IIb (HDAC6, HDAC10) HDAC inhibitor. Our approach enables the discovery of novel targets and inhibitors and suggests that the selectivity of HDAC inhibitors should be evaluated in the context of HDAC complexes and not purified catalytic subunits.  相似文献

The tritiated antagonist SCH23390 was used to identify dopamine D1 receptors in the cerebral cortex and neostriatum. The kinetic properties of binding were investigated in parallel experiments with membrane preparations from both tissues. The densities of receptors (Bmax) and the dissociation constants (KD) were determined from saturation curves, and the specificity of binding verified in competition experiments using agonists and antagonists. The cortical D1 receptor displays the same pharmacological selectivity (including stereospecificity) and kinetic properties as the neostriatal D1 receptor. From both the dissociation kinetics by dilution and the competition curves, it could be established that there is an heterogeneity of binding probably due to high- and low-affinity states. Endogenous dopamine, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetic acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and 3-methoxytyramine contents, as well as D1 receptor distribution, were measured for the neostriatum and four localized cortical areas: anterior cingulate, primary somatosensory, primary visual, and piriform-entorhinal. For the regions examined, the distribution of D1 receptors is heterogeneous, but correlates very well (r greater than 0.98) with the endogenous levels of dopamine and its major metabolites.  相似文献

Species distribution models show great promise as tools for conservation ecology. However, their accuracy has been shown to vary widely among taxa. There is some evidence that this variation is partly owing to ecological differences among species, which make them more or less easy to model. Here we test the effect of five characteristics of Egyptian butterfly species on the accuracy of distribution models, the first such comparison for butterflies in an arid environment. Unlike most previous studies, we perform independent contrasts to control for species relatedness. We show that range size, both globally and locally, has a negative effect on model accuracy. The results shed light on causes of variation in distribution model accuracy among species, and hence have relevance to practitioners using species distribution models in conservation decision making.  相似文献

Summary A method of assessing chromosome homoeologies within the genomes of the Triticeae which does not require the ultimate test of substitution of the chromosomes into wheat is presented. This takes the form of a table listing key characters that are associated with specific homoeologous groups. These characters include marker genes, chromosome morphology, and plant morphologies of wheat-alien chromosome addition and wheat tetrasomic lines.  相似文献

Large brains, relative to body size, can confer advantages to individuals in the form of behavioral flexibility. Such enhanced behavioral flexibility is predicted to carry fitness benefits to individuals facing novel or altered environmental conditions, a theory known as the brain size-environmental change hypothesis. Here, we provide the first empirical link between brain size and survival in novel environments in mammals, the largest-brained animals on Earth. Using a global database documenting the outcome of more than 400 introduction events, we show that mammal species with larger brains, relative to their body mass, tend to be more successful than species with smaller brains at establishing themselves when introduced to novel environments, when both taxonomic and regional autocorrelations are accounted for. This finding is robust to the effect of other factors known to influence establishment success, including introduction effort and habitat generalism. Our results replicate similar findings in birds, increasing the generality of evidence for the idea that enlarged brains can provide a survival advantage in novel environments.  相似文献
