Habitat fragmentation has negative consequences on threatened and endangered species by creating isolated populations. The Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) is experiencing population declines and localized extirpations throughout its range and has been classified as a species of greatest conservation need in Oklahoma, USA. Younger age classes have been poorly studied but may be vital to the stability of remaining populations. To address gaps in knowledge concerning subadult (hatchling and juvenile) morphometrics, survivorship, and home range sizes, we studied 2 cohorts of subadults, for 2 years each, covering their hatching and juvenile years (2016–2019). We used a combination of radio-telemetry and novel harmonic radar methodology to study a closed population of Texas horned lizards in 15 ha of native grassland at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Population abundance for adults and juveniles was estimated as 56.5 ± 5.5 lizards and density as 7.96 lizards/ha. Our lowest estimates of survival indicated an average survival probability for the hatchling life stage of 0.285 (95% CI = 0.15–0.44), which is lower than for adults on the site. Average home range size increased from hatchling to adult life stages. Our results will have an immediate effect on the planning and assessment of ongoing headstart and management programs for Texas horned lizards. © 2021 The Authors. There is evidence in the literature that non-verbal physical features are used as cues for a propensity to cooperate. However, further studies of the human ability to visually detect cooperativeness are required. In particular, the existence of static facial cues of altruism remains questionable. Moreover, an investigation of both sex differences and cross-cultural applicability with respect to altruism detection skills is crucial in the context of the evolution of human cooperation. In this study, we used both a public good game and a charitable contribution to assess the cooperativeness of 156 men and 172 women in rural Senegal and took facial photographs of these individuals. The second portion of the study was conducted in France. In total, 194 men and 171 women were asked to distinguish the most and least selfish individual from a series of 80 pairs of Senegalese facial photographs, each pair consisting of the highest and the lowest contributor from a group in the public good game. Using mixed modeling techniques, we controlled for facial masculinity, age and socio-economic status. For male pairs, both male and female French raters were able to identify more often than by chance which individual made the smallest contribution to the public good in each group; however, detection was not successful with female faces. These results suggest that sex-specific traits are involved and that only male facial traits indicating cooperative skills are, at least inter-culturally, readable. The specific facial traits involved are investigated. However, the charitable contribution was not correlated with the contribution to the public good, and further work is necessary to identify which specific altruistic traits are detectable and to assess the generality of these results.  相似文献

Abstract

The synthesis of pyrimidine nucleosides, cis-N-1-[(2-hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-yl]uracil (4) cis-N-1-[(2-hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-yl]thymine (5) and cis-N-1-[(2-hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-yl]cytosine (6) and their corresponding trans isomers is described. Compound 4 showed modest, selective activity against human immunodeficiency virus in acutely infected primary human lymphocytes.  相似文献

Abstract

A number of 1-(2-deoxy-2-fluoro-β-D-arabinofuranosyl)uracil and -cytosine nucleosides substituted at the 5 position with a nitrophenyl or nitrobenzyl group were synthesized from 5-phenyl- and 5-benzyluracil via condensation of the fluorinated sugar, followed by nitration. The corresponding amino analogues were also prepared by reduction of the nitro nucleosides. The uracil nucleosides were converted into the corresponding cytosine nucleosides by way of the triazole intermediates. None of these nucleosides exhibited significant activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 in Vero cells. However, cytosine nucleosides containing the o-nitrophenyl, p-nitrophenyl, p-nitrobenzyl or p-aminobenzyl substituent were found to be toxic (even at 1 μM) to uninfected Vero cells, although they were essentially nontoxic in HL-60 cells. The 5′-monophosphates of the uracil nucleosides were inhibitors of the reaction catalyzed by purified Ehrlich ascites carcinoma thymidylate synthase, the 5-phenyluracil nucleotides causing a strong inhibition, competitive vs dUMP, described by the Ki value of 0.01 μM.  相似文献

Abstract

The synthesis and encouraging biological findings with boron-containing nucleosides, such as 5-dihydroxyboryl-2′-deoxyuridine, which could be used for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for the treatment of various malignancies, has provided momentum to synthesize several boron containing nucleosides and oligomers. BNCT is based on the property of the non-radioactive boron-10 isotope to capture low energy neutrons, thereby producing a localized cell-destroying nuclear reaction. Thus, irradiation of tumor cells with neutrons, following incorporation of the boronated nucleoside, would result in the destruction of tumor tissue only. Intracellular phosphorylation by nucleoside kinases, and/or incorporation into the cancer cell DNA as a false nucleotide precursor, followed by irradiation by neutrons, would lead primarily to tumor cell death. The synthetic and biological approaches for boronated pyrimidines, nucleosides, and oligonucleotides for BNCT are reviewed.  相似文献

Abstract

Purine analogues and derivatives exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities and are used in the chemotherapy of cancer, parasitic and viral infections, and for the suppression of immune responses. Undoubtedly, this wide range of biological activities reflect an equally wide number of biochemical sites of action, one of which is the purine de novo pathway. New agents which can either serve as inhibitors of enzymes involved in this pathway or as substrates are continually sought. The unique series of nucleosides described herein should meet these desired needs.

The synthesis of 1involved glycosylation of a suitably 4,5-disubstituted imidazole and subsequent cyclization of the imidazole nucleoside so formed to the imidazo[4,5-d]pyridazine nucleoside. Such methodology was successfully employed1,2 in the preparation of certain 4,7-disubstituted imidazo[4,5-d]pyridazine nucleosides. Chlorination of 1furnished 4-chloro-1-(2,3,5-tri-O-acetyl-β-D-ribo-furanosyl)imidazo[4,5-dlpyridazine (2) in 80% yield. This versatile intermediate can now serve as a precursor to a variety of 4-substituted imidazo[4,5-d]pyridazine nucleosides.  相似文献

Abstract

The cellular pharmacology of the D- and L-enantiomers of β-5-o-carboranyl-2′-deoxyuridine (CDU), compounds designed for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), were studied using human CEM lymphoblast and U-251 glioblastoma cells, at a physiologically achievable concentration (1 μM). Accumulation of the enantiomers was rapid and indistinguishable, reaching cellular concentrations > 40-fold higher than extracellular levels, with ~5% persisting in cells after incubation in fresh medium for more than 2 hr. Uptake was not affected by nucleoside uptake inhibitors, but was inhibited by the purine base uptake inhibitor papaverine.  相似文献

Several β-L-3′-substituted-3′-deoxythymidine were stereospecifically synthesized. None of these analogs inhibited HIV-1 nor HBV replication in vitro suggesting that these β-L-pyrimidine derivatives may not be efficiently phosphorylated inside the cells.  相似文献
