The barnacle, Chelonibia testudinaria, is a common inhabitant of the marine turtle epibiont community and plays a key role in the development of this community. Phylogeographic analysis of 79 cytochrome c oxidase I (COX1) sequences for barnacles collected from five populations found contrasting patterns of divergence for populations in the Atlantic vs. the Pacific Ocean. Our analysis indicates that the two Pacific populations, Senri Beach, Japan and Bahia Magdalena, Mexico, were not only highly divergent from the Atlantic populations but are highly divergent from one another. We suggest that barnacles from these populations may represent cryptic species. In contrast, sequence divergence was greatly reduced among barnacles collected from Wassaw Island, GA, USA, Keewaydin, FL, USA, and Kyparissia, Pèloponnésus Island, Greece. A reduction in sequence diversity at the latter site was attributed to a recent range expansion into the Mediterranean Sea. We examined historical patterns of migration among the three Atlantic and Mediterranean populations using the program migrate. This analysis indicates a high rate of migration from Keewaydin to Wassaw Island, contrasted with a much lower rate of migration in the opposite direction. The estimated migration rate from Kyparissia to Keewaydin was also non-negligible. We suggest that the association between C. testudinaria and loggerhead turtles and the patterns of turtle migration have played key roles in the expansion of the range of C. testudinaria into the Mediterranean Sea and the subsequent patterns of barnacle migration. We further propose that the difference between ocean basins, with respect to the impact of host migration on barnacle gene flow, probably stems from the fact that host-mediated dispersal in the Atlantic depends on advanced stage juveniles and adults while any host-mediated dispersal in the Pacific would have to involve early "pelagic" stage juvenile loggerheads.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that decreased hepatocyte ATP is transduced into a hepatic neuronal signal via a change in sodium pump activity, we examined the effect of 2,5-anhydro-D-mannitol (2,5-AM), which stimulates feeding behavior in rats, on intracellular sodium levels using 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Isolated hepatocytes suspended in agarose beads were superfused with either 2.5 mM 2,5-AM or fructose in the presence of the paramagnetic shift reagent, thulium(III)(1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetra(methylenephosphonate)). Superfusion with 2,5-AM decreased hepatocyte ATP and increased intracellular sodium levels compared with superfusion with either fructose or shift reagent alone starting within 15 min of exposure, reaching a maximum level of 120% of baseline by 30 min and declining gradually thereafter over the next 90 min. Superfusion with fructose, which also decreased hepatocyte ATP but by less than half the amount seen with 2,5-AM, had no significant effect on cellular sodium levels. The results support the hypothesis that changes in sodium pump activity could participate in transducing a hunger stimulus associated with hepatocyte energy status into a signal for hunger.  相似文献

The etiology of exercise hypocapnia is unknown.The contributions of exercise intensity (ExInt), lactic acid,environmental temperature, rectal temperature(Tre), and physicalconditioning to the variance in arterialCO2 tension(PaCO2) in the exercising sheep werequantified. We hypothesized that thermal drive contributes tohyperventilation. Four unshorn sheep were exercised at ~30, 50, and70% of maximal O2 consumption for30 min, or until exhaustion, both before and after 5 wk of physicalconditioning. In addition, two of the sheep were shorn and exercised ateach intensity in a cold (<15°C) environment.Tre andO2 consumption were measured continuously. Lactic acid and PaCO2 weremeasured at 5- to 10-min intervals. Data wereanalyzed by multiple regression onPaCO2. During exercise,Tre rose andPaCO2 fell, except at the lowest ExIntin the cold environment. Treexplained 77% of the variance in PaCO2,and ExInt explained 5%. All other variables were insignificant. Weconclude that, in sheep, thermal drive contributes to hyperventilation during exercise.

Abstract.—Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis are two blue mussel species that coexist in western Europe. Previously, we reported that M. galloprovincialis populations contain female and male haplotypes that are fixed in M. edulis populations as well as unique haplotypes. This study assesses whether paraphyly for these species is due to introgression or incomplete lineage extinction. The lineage extinction hypothesis predicts that the shared mtDNA haplotypes in M. galloprovincialis will be significantly diverged from those in M. edulis and form distinct sequence clades. In contrast, the introgression hypothesis proposes that M. edulis haplotypes have only recently been introduced into M. galloprovincialis through hybridization with relatively little divergence accumulating between the shared RFLP haplotypes. We examined 80 mtl6S gene sequences for both the maternal and paternal mtDNA lineages from mussels sampled from various European populations and found strong support for the introgression hypothesis. In addition, we found that M. edulis mtDNA haplotypes appear to be introgressing into mussel populations in the Baltic Sea, which have predominantly M. trossulus nuclear genotypes, indicating that introgressive hybridization is prevalent among European mussel populations.  相似文献

Nucleotide sequences from two nuclear loci, alcohol dehydrogenase and internal transcribed spacer-1 of the nuclear ribosomal DNA repeats, and two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase I and cytochrome oxidase II, were determined from nine species in the Drosophila saltans species group. The partition homogeneity test and partitioned Bremer support were used to measure incongruence between phylogenetic hypotheses generated from individual partitions. Individual loci were generally congruent with each other and consistent with the previously proposed morphological hypothesis, although they differed in level of resolution. Since extreme conflict between partitions did not exist, the data were combined and analyzed simultaneously. The total evidence method gave a more resolved and highly supported phylogeny, as indicated by bootstrap proportions and decay indices, than did any of the individual analyses. The cordata and elliptica subgroups, considered to have diverged early in the history of the D. saltans group, were sister taxa to the remainder of the saltans group. The sturtevanti subgroup, represented by D. milleri and D. sturtevanti, occupies an intermediate position in this phylogeny. The saltans and parasaltans subgroups are sister clades and occupy the most recently derived portion of the phylogeny. As with previous morphological studies, phylogenetic relationships within the saltans subgroup were not satisfactorily resolved by the molecular data.   相似文献

A phage lambda recombinant library containing Euglena gracilis genomic DNA was screened for nuclear rDNA sequences. A recombinant phage was isolated that contained an 11.5-kb nuclear rDNA sequence. The 11.5-kb insert was mapped with restriction endonucleases and was shown to represent a complete rDNA repeat unit that carried the genes for the 19S, 25S, 5.8 S and 5 S cytoplasmic rRNAs. The 2000 rDNA repeat units per haploid genome are organized in the form of identical tandem repeats.  相似文献

The first 1000 cases notified to the National Childhood Encephalopathy Study were analysed. The diagnoses included encephalitis/encephalopathy, prolonged convulsions, infantile spasms, and Reye''s syndrome. Eighty-eight of the children had had a recent infectious disease, including 19 with pertussis. Only 35 of the notified children (3.5%) had received pertussis antigen within seven days before becoming ill. Of 1955 control children matched for age, sex, and area of residence, 34 (1.7%) had been immunised with pertussis vaccine within the seven days before the date on which they became of the same age as the corresponding notified child. The relative risk of a notified child having had pertussis immunisation within that time interval was 2.4 (p less than 0.001). Of the 35 notified children, 32 had no previous neurological abnormality. A year later two had died, nine had developmental retardation, and 21 were normal. A significance association was shown between serious neurological illness and pertussis vaccine, though cases were few and most children recovered completely.  相似文献
