Insect- and bird-size drones—micro air vehicles (MAV) that can perform autonomous flight in natural and man-made environments are now an active and well-integrated research area. MAVs normally operate at a low speed in a Reynolds number regime of 104–105 or lower, in which most flying animals of insects, birds and bats fly, and encounter unconventional challenges in generating sufficient aerodynamic forces to stay airborne and in controlling flight autonomy to achieve complex manoeuvres. Flying insects that power and control flight by flapping wings are capable of sophisticated aerodynamic force production and precise, agile manoeuvring, through an integrated system consisting of wings to generate aerodynamic force, muscles to move the wings and a control system to modulate power output from the muscles. In this article, we give a selective review on the state of the art of biomechanics in bioinspired flight systems in terms of flapping and flexible wing aerodynamics, flight dynamics and stability, passive and active mechanisms in stabilization and control, as well as flapping flight in unsteady environments. We further highlight recent advances in biomimetics of flapping-wing MAVs with a specific focus on insect-inspired wing design and fabrication, as well as sensing systems.This article is part of the themed issue ‘Moving in a moving medium: new perspectives on flight’.  相似文献

Ultra-trace elements or occasionally beneficial elements (OBE) are the new categories of minerals including vanadium (V). The importance of V is attributed due to its multifaceted biological roles, i.e., glucose and lipid metabolism as an insulin-mimetic, antilipemic and a potent stress alleviating agent in diabetes when vanadium is administered at lower doses. It competes with iron for transferrin (binding site for transportation) and with lactoferrin as it is secreted in milk also. The intracellular enzyme protein tyrosine phosphatase, causing the dephosphorylation at beta subunit of the insulin receptor, is inhibited by vanadium, thus facilitating the uptake of glucose inside the cell but only in the presence of insulin. Vanadium could be useful as a potential immune-stimulating agent and also as an antiinflammatory therapeutic metallodrug targeting various diseases. Physiological state and dose of vanadium compounds hold importance in causing toxicity also. Research has been carried out mostly on laboratory animals but evidence for vanadium importance as a therapeutic agent are available in humans and large animals also. This review examines the potential biochemical and molecular role, possible kinetics and distribution, essentiality, immunity, and toxicity-related study of vanadium in a biological system.  相似文献

In recent times, inulinase has emerged as one the most prominent and industrially upcoming enzymes applied to meet the ever increasing demand of d-fructose and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) as sweetener and prebiotics in the food and pharmaceutical industry, respectively. This review deals with types of inulinase and the attempts made to modify it for better thermal stability and shelf life. The ease of immobilization of inulinase has led us to the path of experimenting with different methods of enzyme immobilization since 1979. Several modes of immobilization ranging from simple cross-linking of enzymes onto a polymer support to nanoparticles have been applied over the years. The approach and concept of this review provide a yet unexplored focus on pioneering advances for the development of white biotechnology, for instance production of immobilized inulinase-based reusable biocatalysts and bioreactors designed for their use and for the continuous production of fructose and FOS.  相似文献

A proteostasis view of neurodegeneration (ND) identifies protein aggregation as a leading causative reason for damage seen at the cellular and organ levels. While investigative therapies that aim at dissolving aggregates have failed, and the promises of silencing expression of ND associated pathogenic proteins or the deployment of engineered induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are still in the horizon, emerging literature suggests degrading aggregates through autophagy-related mechanisms hold the current potential for a possible cure. Macroautophagy (hereafter autophagy) is an intracellular degradative pathway where superfluous or unwanted cellular cargoes (such as peroxisomes, mitochondria, ribosomes, intracellular bacteria and misfolded protein aggregates) are wrapped in double membrane vesicles called autophagosomes that eventually fuses with lysosomes for their degradation. The selective branch of autophagy that deals with identification, capture and degradation of protein aggregates is called aggrephagy. Here, we cover the workings of aggrephagy detailing its selectivity towards aggregates. The diverse cellular adaptors that bridge the aggregates with the core autophagy machinery in terms of autophagosome formation are discussed. In ND, essential protein quality control mechanisms fail as the constituent components also find themselves trapped in the aggregates. Thus, although cellular aggrephagy has the potential to be upregulated, its dysfunction further aggravates the pathogenesis. This phenomenon when combined with the fact that neurons can neither dilute out the aggregates by cell division nor the dead neurons can be replaced due to low neurogenesis, makes a compelling case for aggrephagy pathway as a potential therapeutic option.  相似文献

The effects of pulmonary lymphatic obstruction and pulmonary venous congestion on the activities of slowly adapting receptors (SAR) and rapidly adapting receptors (RAR) of the airways were examined in anaesthetized, artificially ventilated dogs. In 11 out of 12 RAR (12 dogs) examined, pulmonary lymphatic obstruction for a period of 20 min produced a sustained significant increase in activity without a significant change in peak airway pressure and dynamic compliance. The activity remained significantly elevated even after the pulmonary lymphatic obstruction was released. This stimulus was without effect on the SAR (n = 5 dogs). Pulmonary venous congestion alone increased the RAR activity (n = 7 dogs) significantly without producing significant changes in airway mechanics. Lymphatic obstruction, when superimposed upon congestion, did not produce a further significant increase in activity. In four dogs the effect of pulmonary venous congestion (left atrial pressure increased from 7.6 +/- 1.7 to 16.3 +/- 2.7 mmHg) (1 mmHg = 133.3 Pa) on pulmonary lymphatic flow was examined. The procedure caused a significant increase in lymph flow. These results suggest that in the dog, the RAR activity is influenced by changes in the pulmonary extravascular space.  相似文献
