Although recent evidence indicates that coevolutionary interactions between species often vary on a biogeographical scale, little consideration has been given to the processes responsible for producing this pattern. One potential explanation is that changes in the community composition alter the coevolutionary interactions between species, but little evidence exists regarding the occurrence of such changes. Here we present evidence that the pattern of natural selection on plant defence traits, and the probable response to that selection, are critically dependent on the composition of the biotic community. The evolutionary trajectory of defence traits against mammalian herbivory in the Ivyleaf morning glory (Ipomoea hederacea), and which defence traits are likely to respond to selection, are both dependent on the presence or absence of insect herbivores. These results indicate that variation in community composition may be a driving force in generating geographical mosaics.  相似文献

Pollen discounting, a reduction in outcross success associated with increased selfing, was evaluated in the common morning glory Ipomoea purpurea. A field experiment was conducted to estimate selfing rates and outcross success using small arrays of plants with large or small anther-stigma distance (ASD). To evaluate the effect of genotypic composition on the mating-system parameters, arrays were composed of five different frequencies of small- and large-ASD genotypes. While the selfing rates of genotypes with small ASD were consistently higher than genotypes with large ASD regardless of the genotypic frequency, outcross success was negatively frequency dependent. The genotype that was at lower frequency in the array had higher outcrossing success in three out of the four array types with unequal frequencies. This advantage-when-rare phenomenon can contribute to preventing the fixation of either extreme ASD-morph and maintaining a mixed mating system in I. purpurea.  相似文献

Theoretical studies show that, although inbreeding depression (ID) will counterbalance the transmission advantage of selfing, it can only maintain a mixed mating system in plants when at least one of the following two conditions is met: (1) there is a positive association between selfing rates and the level of ID; and (2) ID is greater than 0.5 for the female component of fitness, while the average ID for male and female fitness is less than 0.5. This study tests whether these two conditions hold in the common morning glory, Ipomoea purpurea, which has a mixed mating system with 30% self-fertilization. Inbreeding depression was found in all but one fitness component measured in two groups of plants with distinct anther-stigma distances (ASD), a character that influences selfing rates. However, when examined separately, a negative association was found between selfing rates and ID; plants with large ASD (low-selfing-rate genotypes) tended to have higher ID than ones with small ASD (high-selfing-rate genotypes). Furthermore, the overall lifetime ID for male (12.5%) and female (24%) components of fitness, averaged across two ASD groups, were lower than what is necessary for ID to maintain an evolutionarily stable mixed mating system. Therefore, although inbreeding depression contributes to balancing the transmission advantage of selfing, it is not likely to be the primary mechanism maintaining the mixed mating system of I. purpurea. An important component of the process of coevolution between plants and their insect herbivores is the imposition of selection on plants by insects. Although such selection has been inferred from indirect evidence, little direct evidence for it exists. One goal of this study was to seek direct evidence by determining, for a single plant-herbivore system, whether insect herbivores impose selection on their host plants. A second goal was to determine whether costs are associated with genotypes that confer resistance to herbivores, as has been commonly postulated. The annual morning glory, Ipomoea purpurea, exhibits genetic variation in resistance to four different types of insects. For three of these types, most of the genetic variation is additive. Removal of insect herbivores increased the number of seeds produced by I. purpurea by 20% and eliminated additive genetic variation for seed number (fitness). This result implies that herbivores impose selection on some trait(s) of their host plants. Coupled with selection for decreased damage by corn earworms, as revealed by a negative additive genetic covariance between damage and fitness, this result suggests that insect herbivores impose selection on resistance to corn earworms in I. purpurea. Two types of cost of resistance to herbivores were sought in I. purpurea: 1) internal trade-offs in allocation of resources and 2) ecological trade-offs between resistances to different insects. No costs of either type were detected. This result suggests that cost-benefit arguments that attempt to predict the evolution of levels of resistance to herbivores are not applicable to I. purpurea.  相似文献

Substance abuse and dependence is the most common psychiatric problem. Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance and most people who abuse other substance(s) abuse alcohol at the same time. Accumulating evidence suggests that neurophysiological and pathological effects of ethanol are mediated to a considerable extent via the glutamatergic system. Ethanol disrupts glutamatergic neurotransmission by inhibiting the response of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and by promoting neuronal toxicity through upregulation of the NMDA receptor density. Therefore, short-term/acute ethanol treatment results in a blockade of NMDA receptor-mediated neurotransmission and apoptotic cell death by inhibiting the trophic effect mediated by the NMDA receptor whereas chronic ethanol treatment and withdrawal results in an enhanced toxic response toward glutamate. The neurobiology of human alcoholism such as ethanol intoxication, dependence, withdrawal seizures, delirium tremens, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome can be better understood as a spectrum of consequences of ethanol's effect on the NMDA glutamatergic system.  相似文献

We assayed the diurnal concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) in 6 healthy male volunteers to evaluate the self-similar features in the time series of each hormone on the basis of fractal theory and to determine the fractal dimension as an index of the complexity of the diurnal variation. In addition, we assessed the effects of a 6-hour delay in the sleep period on the complexity of the diurnal variaton of these hormones. There was a statistically significant fractal feature in the serum levels of GH both under the nocturnal-sleep and delayed-sleep conditions in all subjects. The time series of the serum PRL concentrations also showed a statistically significant fractal feature under the nocturnal-sleep and delayed-sleep conditions in all subjects. The fractal dimensions of the patterns of the GH or PRL levels were 1.879 and 1.929 or 1.754 and 1.785 under the nocturnal-sleep and delayed-sleep conditions, respectively. Two-way ANOVA revealed no significant difference in the fractal dimension between the two sleep conditions but did reveal a significant difference between the fractal dimensions of the GH and PRL levels. These results showed (1) that delayed sleep had no significant effect on the complexity of the diurnal pattern of these hormones, and (2) that the diurnal pattern of the GH levels was more complex than that of the PRL levels.  相似文献
