Weather variables can influence life-history traits of ungulates. In this study, we assessed the suitability of regional climate indices including the NAO and two measures of local climate—the maximal extent of ice on the Baltic Sea (MIE) and absolute values of its annual deviations from the multi-year mean (VMIE)—to examine how density-independent processes influence moose body size and fecundity. We predicted that both winter severity (large values of MIE) and variability (large values of VMIE) depress moose traits (e.g., severe winters increase energy expenditure because of large snow depth or low temperatures, while the warmer than average winters may impose greater energetic demands on thermoregulation due to wet and windy weather, or may have indirect negative effects on summer foraging conditions). We estimated direct, delayed (lag) and cumulative effects of each climate measure. Both MIE and VMIE negatively affected jawbone length, with the effect size varying between the respective climatic indices and among age classes. In contrast to results obtained using local climatic variables, the NAO index had no significant effect on jawbone length. The probability of multiple ovulation was negatively influenced by direct effects of VMIE and delayed effects of MIE and NAO. We conclude that MIE and VMIE capture different aspects of the local climate and that these indices can be used in parallel as determinants of growth and fecundity of northern ungulates in coastal regions of the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

CD8(+)CD60(+) T cells (80-98% CD45RO(+); 20% CD23(+)) are significantly increased in the blood of serum IgE(+) ragweed-sensitized (RS) compared with serum IgE-nonatopic humans (p = 0.001). CD8(+)CD60(+) T cells of the RS patients produced IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, IFN-alpha. and IFN-gamma, but not IL-6 or IL-13. When their PBMC were cultured with ragweed Ag (RA), peak IgE responses occurred on day 10; none was induced with non-cross-reacting or without Ag; nonatopic PBMC did not respond to any stimulant. When either CD4(+) or CD8(+)CD60(+) T cells were depleted from RS PBMC before culture with RA, no IgE responses were induced. If purified CD4(+) T cells or low numbers of CD8(+)CD60(+) T cells were added back to the depleted PBMC, IgE responses were restored. However, higher numbers of CD8(+)CD60(+) T cells totally suppressed IgE responses. Total suppression also was obtained when RS PBMC were cultured with RA and either anti-IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, IFN-gamma (all concentrations), or IFN-alpha (low concentrations), but not anti-IL-6 or IL-13. Higher concentrations of anti-IFN-alpha potentiated IgE responses.  相似文献

The fact that birds are sensitive to ultraviolet light (UV,320-400 nm) has been largely ignored by previous studies ofaposematism. Therefore, in the present article we investigatedwhether great tits preferred ultraviolet-reflecting colorscompared to colors without UV reflection and whether UV cuesalone could function as aposematic signals. We were able to manipulate prey visibility in UV light by changing the UV reflectanceof prey items as well as altering the lighting conditions.In order to perform a preference experiment we used three pairsof colors (green+UV vs. green, gray+UV vs. gray, yellow+UVvs. yellow) on a black background. The birds ate both UV typesequally for all three colors. Thus, there was no avoidance of the UV-reflecting prey. Next we tested the possibility thatUV reflection may affect avoidance learning. We used eithergreen or green+UV as a signal for unpalatability. In this set-upthe difference in UV did not allow avoidance learning to occur.Our experiment with great tits does not support the hypothesisthat UV cues alone might work effectively as aposematic signals.  相似文献

Good genes models of sexual selection assume that sexual advertisement is costly and thus the level of advertisement honestly reveals heritable viability. Recently it has been suggested that an important cost of sexual advertisement might be impairment of the functioning of the immune system. In this field experiment we investigated the possible trade-offs between immune function and sexual advertisement by manipulating both mating effort and activity of immune defence in male pied flycatchers. Mating effort was increased in a non-arbitrary manner by removing females from mated males during nest building. Widowed males sustained higher haematocrit levels than control males and showed higher expression of forehead patch height, suggesting that manipulation succeeded in increasing mating effort. Males that were experimentally forced to increase mating effort had reduced humoral immune responsiveness compared with control males. In addition, experimental activation of immune defence by vaccination with novel antigens reduced the expression of male ornament dimensions. To conclude, our results indicate that causality behind the trade-off between immune function and sexual advertisement may work in both directions: sexual activity suppresses immune function but immune challenge also reduces sexual advertisement.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that underlie colonization success is crucial both for ecological theory and conservation practices. The most effective way to assess colonization ability is to introduce experimentally different sets of individuals in empty patches of suitable habitat and to monitor the outcome. We translocated mated female waterstriders, Aquarius najas, into 90 streams that were not currently inhabited by the species. We manipulated sizes of propagules (from 2 to 16 mated females) and numbers of origin populations (one or two). Three origin populations were genetically different from each other, but they were less than 150 km from the streams of translocation. The results demonstrate clearly that both the larger propagule size and the high number of source populations have positive effects on the probability of colonizing a new stream. Thus, in addition to the stochastic factors related to the propagule size it may be essential to consider also the diversity of genetic origin for colonization success.Due to an error in the citation line, this revised PDF (published in December 2003) deviates from the printed version, and is the correct and authoritative version of the paper.  相似文献

The heritability estimate (±SE) for tarsus length in the pied flycatcher is 0.53 ± 0.10, based on mother-offspring regressions. The heritability is almost the same (0.50 ± 0.22) for offspring transferred to other nests and reared by foster parents, whereas there is no resemblance (0.04 ± 0.23) between the offspring and their foster mothers. Hence, the nest environment does not affect parent-offspring resemblance. However, a full-sib correlation yields an estimate of the heritability twice as high as the parent-offspring regression did, indicating that shared environment effects, which are not correlated with the tarsus length of parents, must be important. An environmental deviation due to food factors affecting tarsus length is demonstrated. The most important food factors are probably associated with 1) polygyny, which leads to reduced paternal feeding at secondary nests, 2) high breeding density, and 3) progress of the breeding season. All three are associated with reductions in offspring mean tarsus length. We estimate selection on tarsus length for the major components of lifetime reproductive success. Offspring with the shortest tarsi have reduced survival from fledging until breeding, and males with tarsus length close to the mean are most successful in attracting mates. Clutch size increases with female tarsus length, except for individuals with very long tarsi. In general, directional selection is weak, but stabilizing selection is rather strong for survival and male mating success.  相似文献

ERGIC-53 is a type I transmembrane lectin facilitating the efficient export of a subset of secretory glycoproteins from the endoplasmic reticulum. Previous results have shown that ERGIC-53 is present as reduction-sensitive homo-oligomers, i.e. as a balanced mixture of disulfide-linked hexamers and dimers, with the two cysteine residues located close to the transmembrane domain playing a crucial role in oligomerization. Here, we demonstrate, using sucrose gradient sedimentation, cross-linking analyses, and non-denaturing gel electrophoresis, that ERGIC-53 is present exclusively as a hexameric complex in cells. However, the hexamers exist in two forms, one as a disulfide-linked, Triton X-100, perfluoro-octanic acid, and SDS-resistant complex, and the other as a non-covalent, Triton X-100, perfluoro-octanoic acid-resistant, but SDS-sensitive, complex made up of three disulfide-linked dimers that are likely to interact through the coiled-coil domains present in the luminal part of the protein. In contrast to what was previously believed, neither of the membrane-proximal cysteine residues plays an essential role in the formation, or maintenance, of the latter form of hexamers. Subcellular fractionation revealed that the double-cysteine mutant was present in the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi-intermediate compartment, indicating that the two cysteine residues are not essential for the intracellular distribution of ERGIC-53. Based on these results, we present a model for the formation of the two hexameric forms.  相似文献

The determination of bacterial viability in probiotic products is of economic, technological, and clinical significance. We compared four methods to enumerate three Bifidobacterium strains in fermented oat products during storage. A subpopulation of nonculturable cells retained a functional cell membrane typical of viable cells, indicating that probiotic bacteria become dormant during storage.  相似文献

The male lifetime lekking performance was studied, and related to inbreeding-outbreeding in a wild population of black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) in central Finland between 1989 and 1995. Inbreeding was measured as the mean heterozygosity and mean d(2) of 15 microsatellite loci. We found a significantly positive relationship between mean d(2) and lifetime copulation success (LCS), while the relationship between heterozygosity and LCS was close to significant. We also found that males that never obtained a lek territory had significantly lower mean heterozygosity than males that were observed on a territory at least during one mating season in their life. Furthermore, among males that were successful in obtaining a lek territory, LCS and mean d(2) were highest for those males that held central territories. We suggest that inbred males have a disadvantage (or outbred males have an advantage) in the competition for territories that may explain the relationships with LCS and inbreeding. Furthermore, the fact that mean d(2) was positively correlated with LCS whereas heterozygosity was not when we restricted the analysis to territorial males, suggests that mean d(2) provides more information about levels of inbreeding-outbreeding than heterozygosity alone, and potentially highlights the effects of heterosis. To our knowledge, this is the first time that measures of inbreeding and lifetime fitness have been linked in a non-isolated population. This is important in establishing that the relationships found in previous studies are not artefacts of low gene flow created by limited dispersal but a general feature of wild vertebrate populations.  相似文献

Whole cell and surface proteomes were analyzed together with adhesive properties of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (NCFM) grown on the emerging prebiotic raffinose, exemplifying a synbiotic. Adhesion of NCFM to mucin and intestinal HT‐29 cells increased three‐fold after culture with raffinose versus glucose, as also visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Comparative proteomics using 2D‐DIGE showed 43 unique proteins to change in relative abundance in whole cell lysates from NCFM grown on raffinose compared to glucose. Furthermore, 14 unique proteins in 18 spots of the surface subproteome underwent changes identified by differential 2DE, including elongation factor G, thermostable pullulanase, and phosphate starvation inducible stress‐related protein increasing in a range of +2.1 ? +4.7 fold. By contrast five known moonlighting proteins decreased in relative abundance by up to ?2.4 fold. Enzymes involved in raffinose catabolism were elevated in the whole cell proteome; α‐galactosidase (+13.9 fold); sucrose phosphorylase (+5.4 fold) together with metabolic enzymes from the Leloir pathway for galactose utilization and the glycolysis; β‐galactosidase (+5.7 fold); galactose (+2.9/+3.1 fold) and fructose (+2.8 fold) kinases. The insights at the molecular and cellular levels contributed to the understanding of the interplay of a synbiotic composed of NCFM and raffinose with the host.  相似文献
