Dispersal behaviour of animals in fragmented habitats has generated intensive theoretical attention but empirical data on the evolution of dispersal are still relatively scarce. Theory predicts reduced dispersal propensity in small and isolated habitat patches. We tested these predictions in the waterstrider Aquarius najas, a wingless species with special habitat demands. Flightlessness constrains insect dispersal and as a stream specialist A. najas cannot survive on still water. Lakes therefore represent a dispersal barrier for this species. We measured dispersal propensity of the waterstrider A. najas which originated from ten fragmented populations. In the experiment, we transplanted laboratory-grown individuals to the field. We did not find differences between sex in dispersal propensity. However, we found that waterstriders that originated from small and isolated patches moved less than individuals from large and more continuous habitats. This suggests that the cost of dispersal over hostile surrounding habitats may be high. We conclude that a low likelihood of dispersal in A. najas is an adaptation to small and isolated stream habitats.  相似文献

Design, synthesis, and characterization of six novel bile acid-cysteamine conjugates together with investigation of their structural studies, gelation properties, and preliminary toxicity evaluation, are reported. Solid state properties of selected compounds were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and (13)C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy. N-(2-thioethyl)-3α,7α,12α-trihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-amide was shown to exhibit (pseudo)polymorphism, and a single crystal structure of its non-stoichiometric hydrate is reported herein. Cholyl and dehydrocholyl derivatives bearing three functionalities in their steroidal backbone were shown to undergo self-assembly leading to gelation in certain organic solvents. Preliminary morphology studies of the formed gels by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed. The standard model mouse fibroblast cell line together with the MTT and NR tests were utilized for evaluating the toxicity of the prepared compounds. Lithocholyl, ursodeoxycholyl, and dehydrocholyl derivatives turned out to be relatively non-toxic in the conditions studied.  相似文献

Synthesis and solid-state structural characterization of five bile acid amides of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) are reported. Systematic crystallization experiments revealed a number of structural modifications and/or solvate/hydrate systems for these conjugates. Particularly, cholic acid conjugate exhibited five distinct structure modifications, including one anhydrous form, mono- and dihydrates, as well as ethanol and 2-butanol solvates. The obtained crystal forms were examined extensively with various analytical methods, including solid-state NMR, Raman, and IR spectroscopies, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. After releasing their crystal solvent molecules, the resulted non-solvated structure forms showed 50-75°C higher melting points than corresponding bile acids, and thermal degradation occurred for all conjugates at about 300-330°C. Moreover, the single crystal X-ray structure of the ursodeoxycholic acid-4-aminopyridine conjugate is reported.  相似文献

The sub-cortical beetle fauna of dead Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) trunks was compared in primeval forests and managed forests in central Finland. The numbers of both individuals and species were higher in the managed forest in spite of the smaller trunk surface area examined. The proportion of rare species was higher in the primeval forest. Although most species occurred both in primeval and managed forests, there were striking differences in the abundance relations: there was only one species (Pytho depressus) in common among the ten most abundant species. The proportion of bark beetles (Scolytidae) was more than 50% in the managed forests, and less than 5% in the primeval forests. The number of species per site was associated with observation date, occurrence of snails and trunk position (standing or lying) in the primeval forest, and with trunk diameter in the managed forests. The occurrence of rare beetle species in dead conifer trunks was related to man's effects on the forest. Although many sub-cortical species can live in managed forests, the fauna differs drastically from that of primeval forests.  相似文献

Synchronous sexual signalling is a behavioural phenomenon that has received considerable theoretical interest, but surprisingly few empirical tests have been conducted. Here, we present a set of experiments designed to determine (i) whether the sexual signalling of the drumming wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata is synchronous, and (ii) whether the synchrony may have evolved through female preference. Using controlled playback experiments, we found that males actively synchronized their drumming bouts with other males and females significantly preferred closely synchronized drumming clusters compared with loose clusters. In loose clusters, the first drumming signals attracted the most female responses, whereas in close clusters, the last drumming signals were the most heeded. We suggest that this female preference for the last drummer can maintain male synchronous signalling in H. rubrofasciata.  相似文献

The metabolic modifications of birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) leaf phenolics in the digestive tract of its major defoliator, larvae of the autumnal moth Epirrita autumnata, were studied. The main phenolic acids of birch, i.e. chlorogenic and p-coumaroylquinic acids, were isomerised in the alkaline digestive tract. Moreover, only 16 to 92% of the ingested amounts of chlorogenic acid were found in the faeces of individual larvae; the missing portion is possibly being used in the formation of reactive o-quinones. Water-soluble flavonoid glycosides were mostly excreted unaltered. In contrast, lipophilic flavonoid aglycones were not excreted as such, but as glycosides after being detoxified by E. autumnata via glycosylation. When the larvae were fed with leaf-painted acacetin and kaempferide, i.e. two naturally occurring birch leaf flavonoid aglycones, acacetin-7-O-glucoside and kaempferide-3-O-glucoside appeared in larval faeces as major metabolites. However, the efficiency of aglycone glycosylation varied-, ranging from 17 to 33%, depending on the aglycone and its dietary level. There was also large variation in the efficiency of glycosylation--from 2 to 57%--among individual larvae. These results demonstrate a compound-specific metabolism of phenolic compounds, leading to different phenolic profiles in the insect gut compared to its leaf diet.  相似文献
