Objective

The aim of this study was to determine (i) the effect of maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on (i) the circulating levels of omentin-1 in cord and maternal plasma, and (ii) gene expression and release of omentin-1 from human placenta and adipose tissue. The effect of pregnancy on circulating omentin-1 levels was also determined.

Design

Omentin-1 levels were measured in maternal and cord plasma from obese and non-obese normal glucose tolerant women (NGT; n = 44) and women with GDM (n = 39) at the time of term elective Caesarean section. Placenta and adipose tissue expression and release of omentin-1 was measured from 22 NGT and 22 GDM women collected at the time of term elective Caesarean section. Omentin-1 levels were also measured in maternal plasma from 13 NGT women at 11 and 28 weeks gestation and 7 weeks postpartum.

Results

Maternal obesity was associated with significantly lower omentin-1 levels in maternal plasma; however, there was no effect of maternal obesity on cord omentin levels. Omentin-1 gene expression was lower in placenta and adipose tissue obtained from women with pre-existing obesity. In addition to this, adipose tissue release of omentin-1 was significantly lower from obese pregnant women. Omentin-1 levels were significantly lower in non-obese GDM compared to non-obese NGT women. However, there was no difference in omentin-1 levels between obese NGT and obese GDM women. There was no effect of GDM on cord omentin levels, and placental and adipose tissue omentin-1 expression. Maternal omentin-1 levels were negatively correlated with fetal birthweight and fetal ponderal index.

Conclusions

The data presented in this study demonstrate that pre-existing maternal obesity is associated with lower omentin-1 expression in placenta, adipose tissue and maternal plasma. Alteration in omentin-1 in pregnancy may influence the development of metabolic disorders in offspring later in life.  相似文献

Serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) and antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) were determined serially in patients and staff in a hemodialysis unit. A low prevalence of HBsAg (2.8 percent) was found. However, in patients without HBsAg, anti-HBc alone was present in 9.2 percent, and coexistent anti-HBs and anti-HBc in 19.2 percent. In persons with anti-HBc only, the levels of anti-HBc correlate positively with abnormal results on liver function studies (LFS). In all subjects with abnormal LFS findings, anti-HBc levels were greater than 6.04 radioimmunoassay (RIA) units. In subjects with both anti-HBs and anti-HBc, all five subjects with higher anti-HBc relative levels had abnormal LFS results and all subjects with normal LFS results had higher anti-HBs relative levels. Along with other recent reports in the literature, these findings suggest a hepatitis B prevalence in this hemodialysis unit far in excess of that anticipated on the basis of HBsAg prevalence.  相似文献

Elucidating vector distribution based on an accurate species identification is important to understanding the nature of the species complex in order to achieve vector control. Morphologically, An. minimus s.l. is difficult to distinguish from both its species complex and its closely related species. A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique and a single multiplex-allele specific PCR developed for species identification were applied in this study in comparison with morphological identification. Both methods were used, combining with geographical information systems to determine the distribution of An. minimus species A and C. The investigation on the breeding habitats was performed in the malarious area of western Thailand. Anopheles larvae were collected from 36 bodies of water among five districts (Sangkhaburi, Thong Pha Phum, Si Sawat, Muang, and Sai Yok) of Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. In this study, An. minimus A larvae were present in all study districts but the association differed when focusing on study sites within each district. Although there were many reports of An. minimus A in Ban Phu Rat and Ban Phu Toei villages in Sai Yok District, we did not find the breeding sites of species A in those two areas. An. minimus A and C were found in Ban Phu Ong Ka village in Sai Yok District. The breeding habitats of An. minimus C were present covering 30-40 km of distance in northern part of Sai Yok and this species was also found in the central and southern parts of Si Sawat District.  相似文献

In this article we argue that in order to understand why some governance systems deliver while others do not, we need to assess contributions and limitations of governability. Here, governability refers to a measure of how governable a particular fisheries and coastal system is. Such a system is always comprised of two parts: a system-to-be-governed and a governing system. Governability also depends on the interactions between these two systems. We provide key variables that must be assessed in order to determine governability related to these systems and their interactions. A governability assessment framework is proposed here to suggest that governance performance can only be judged from what is in the potential of the governing system, given the limitations of the governabiltiy of the system-to-be governed, the governing system itself, and their interactions. Such an assessment helps identify what exactly governing systems can and should do in order to enhance their performance.  相似文献

Temperature and pH play an important role in the stability of phycocyanin, a natural blue colorant. Systematic investigations showed the maximum stability of phycocyanin was in the pH range 5.5–6.0. Incubation at temperatures between 47 and 64 °C caused the concentration (CR) and half-life of phycocyanin in solution to decrease rapidly. The CR value remained at approximately 50% after incubating for 30 min at 59 °C. After heating at 60 °C for 15 min, the CR value of phycocyanin at pH 7.0 was maintained at around 62–70% when 20–40% glucose or sucrose was added, and the half-life increased from 19 min to 30–44 min. 2.5% sodium chloride was found to be an effective preservative for phycocyanin at pH 7.0 as a CR value of 76% was maintained and the half-life of 67 min was increased.  相似文献

The emergence and rapid spread of novel DS-1-like G1P[8] human rotaviruses in Japan were recently reported. More recently, such intergenogroup reassortant strains were identified in Thailand, implying the ongoing spread of unusual rotavirus strains in Asia. During rotavirus surveillance in Thailand, three DS-1-like intergenogroup reassortant strains having G3P[8] (RVA/Human-wt/THA/SKT-281/2013/G3P[8] and RVA/Human-wt/THA/SKT-289/2013/G3P[8]) and G2P[8] (RVA/Human-wt/THA/LS-04/2013/G2P[8]) genotypes were identified in fecal samples from hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis. In this study, we sequenced and characterized the complete genomes of strains SKT-281, SKT-289, and LS-04. On whole genomic analysis, all three strains exhibited unique genotype constellations including both genogroup 1 and 2 genes: G3-P[8]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A2-N2-T2-E2-H2 for strains SKT-281 and SKT-289, and G2-P[8]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A2-N2-T2-E2-H2 for strain LS-04. Except for the G genotype, the unique genotype constellation of the three strains (P[8]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A2-N2-T2-E2-H2) is commonly shared with DS-1-like G1P[8] strains. On phylogenetic analysis, nine of the 11 genes of strains SKT-281 and SKT-289 (VP4, VP6, VP1-3, NSP1-3, and NSP5) appeared to have originated from DS-1-like G1P[8] strains, while the remaining VP7 and NSP4 genes appeared to be of equine and bovine origin, respectively. Thus, strains SKT-281 and SKT-289 appeared to be reassortant strains as to DS-1-like G1P[8], animal-derived human, and/or animal rotaviruses. On the other hand, seven of the 11 genes of strain LS-04 (VP7, VP6, VP1, VP3, and NSP3-5) appeared to have originated from locally circulating DS-1-like G2P[4] human rotaviruses, while three genes (VP4, VP2, and NSP1) were assumed to be derived from DS-1-like G1P[8] strains. Notably, the remaining NSP2 gene of strain LS-04 appeared to be of bovine origin. Thus, strain LS-04 was assumed to be a multiple reassortment strain as to DS-1-like G1P[8], locally circulating DS-1-like G2P[4], bovine-like human, and/or bovine rotaviruses. Overall, the great genomic diversity among the DS-1-like G1P[8] strains seemed to have been generated through reassortment involving human and animal strains. To our knowledge, this is the first report on whole genome-based characterization of DS-1-like intergenogroup reassortant strains having G3P[8] and G2P[8] genotypes that have emerged in Thailand. Our observations will provide important insights into the evolutionary dynamics of emerging DS-1-like G1P[8] strains and related reassortant ones.  相似文献

In this present study, sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were used for biosurfactant production from Pseudomonasaeruginosa SP4, which was isolated from petroleum-contaminated soil in Thailand. Two identical lab-scale aerobic SBR units were operated at a constant temperature of 37 degrees C, and a mineral medium (MM) with palm oil was used as the culture medium. The effects of oil loading rate (OLR) and cycle time on the biosurfactant production were studied. The results indicated that the optimum conditions for the biosurfactant production were at an OLR of 2 kg/m(3)days and a cycle time of 2 days/cycle, which provided a surface tension reduction of 59%, a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 90%, and an oil removal of 97%. Under the optimum conditions, it was found that the biosurfactant production was maximized at an aeration time of 40 h. These preliminary results suggest that the SBR can potentially be adapted for biosurfactant production, and perhaps further developed, potentially for large-scale biosurfactant production.  相似文献

Multiplex PCR was applied to explore the antimicrobial-resistance profiles of 145 gonococci isolated from Bangrak Hospital, Thailand in 2007. All isolates were clearly identified for the plasmid-mediated resistant types of penicillin (Asia, Africa and Toronto) and tetracycline (American and Dutch). This method can also predict the decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin by detection of Ser-91 mutation. Prevalence rates of penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) and high-level tetracycline-resistance N. gonorrhoeae (TRNG) were shown to be high as 82.1% and 84.1%, respectively. Most PPNG carried the Africa-type (78.2%) while the American-type (61.8%) was harboured in most TRNG. Mono- and triple-resistance patterns were presented in 2.6% and 79.5% of male, 20.7% and 62.1% of men who have sex with men (MSM), 0% and 75.0% of female, and 10% and 70% of female sex workers (FSW). Additionally, the rate of the Dutch type was high in patients among the age of 35-44 years (57.1%) and female patients (43.8%). The changing types of plasmids have been noticed during the time period of study. The multi-resistance patterns of the gonococcal isolates can be used as an epidemiological index of gonorrhoea and human sexual behaviours. This information will support the management of individual patients as well as the public health surveillance.  相似文献

The highest purity ratio of phycocyanin extract was obtained when fresh biomass was used as raw material. The crude extract was purified by membrane process using microfiltration and ultrafiltration. Membrane of pore sizes 5 μm, at feed flow rate of 150 mL min−1, permeate flux of 58.5 L h−1 m−2 was selected for coarse filtration and membrane with pore size 0.8/0.2 μm at the flow rate of 100 mL min−1, permeate flux of 336 L h−1 m−2 was selected for fine filtration, giving phycocyanin recovery of 88.6% and 82.9%, respectively. For ultrafiltration, membrane with MWCO at 50 kDa, 69 kPa and 75 mL min−1 of flow rate with a mean permeate flux 26.8 L h−1 m−2 and a retention rate of 99% was found to be optimal. Under these filtration conditions, food grade phycocyanin with the purity around 1.0 containing c-phycocyanin as the major component was obtained.  相似文献
