The inherent economic and social challenges in major cities have been known to foster stress among the urban population. Frequent stress over long periods may well have serious damaging outcomes, resulting in ailments such as burnout syndrome, sleeplessness and exhaustion, depression, feelings of panic, among others. Therefore, providing access to resources that may enable people to cope with the stress of urban life has become a crucial phenomenon in the twentieth century. Increasing empirical evidence indicates that the presence of natural areas can contribute to enhancing the quality of life in many ways. This study examines two historical Persian gardens from the residents’ perspective in well-known, historic cities of Iran: Isfahan and Kerman. The data were collected through questionnaires (n = 252), semi-structured interviews (n = 20), and visual observation techniques. The findings demonstrate that nature, diversity and the gardens’ historical background, and coherence motivate the residents’ frequent visits to the gardens, which help to address their social, psychological, and physical needs. In addition, the residents’ involvements and the variety of experiences that occur in the gardens lead to the creation of deeper meanings and values associated with the gardens. Subsequently, these construct functional and emotional attachment that evokes a sense of place and identity and may contribute to society’s health and well-being.  相似文献

A 58-year-old female underwent PVC ablation within the right coronary cusp for symptomatic PVCs and suspected PVC-induced cardiomyopathy. Immediately after the procedure, she started to complain about feelings of impending doom, disorientation to time and place, and amnesia regarding the procedure. No sensory or motor deficits could be elicited. A thromboembolic event was suspected and she was evaluated by a neurologist. CT scan of her brain was negative. Vaginal microbicides hold great promise for the prevention of viral diseases like HIV, but the failure of several microbicide candidates in clinical trials has raised important questions regarding the parameters to be evaluated to determine in vivo efficacy in humans. Clinical trials of the candidate microbicides nonoxynol-9 (N9) and cellulose sulfate revealed an increase in HIV infection, vaginal inflammation, and recruitment of HIV susceptible lymphocytes, highlighting the need to identify biomarkers that can accurately predict microbicide toxicity early in preclinical development and in human trials. We used quantitative proteomics and RT-PCR approaches in mice and rabbits to identify protein changes in vaginal fluid and tissue in response to treatment with N9 or benzalkonium chloride (BZK). We compared changes generated with N9 and BZK treatment to the changes generated in response to tenofovir gel, a candidate microbicide that holds promise as a safe and effective microbicide. Both compounds down regulated mucin 5 subtype B, and peptidoglycan recognition protein 1 in vaginal tissue; however, mucosal brush samples also showed upregulation of plasma proteins fibrinogen, plasminogen, apolipoprotein A-1, and apolipoprotein C-1, which may be a response to the erosive nature of N9 and BZK. Additional proteins down-regulated in vaginal tissue by N9 or BZK treatment include CD166 antigen, olfactomedin-4, and anterior gradient protein 2 homolog. We also observed increases in the expression of C-C chemokines CCL3, CCL5, and CCL7 in response to treatment. There was concordance in expression level changes for several of these proteins using both the mouse and rabbit models. Using a human vaginal epithelial cell line, the expression of mucin 5 subtype B and olfactomedin-4 were down-regulated in response to N9, suggesting these markers could apply to humans. These data identifies new proteins that after further validation could become part of a panel of biomarkers to effectively evaluate microbicide toxicity.  相似文献

The objectives of this project were to use finite element methods to determine how changes in the elastic modulus due to oral cancer therapeutic radiation alter the distribution of mechanical stresses in teeth and to determine if observed failures in irradiated teeth correlate with changes in mechanical stresses. A thin slice section finite element (FE) model was constructed from micro CT sections of a molar tooth using MIMICS and 3-Matic software. This model divides the tooth into three enamel regions, the dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) and dentin. The enamel elastic modulus was determined in each region using nano indentation for three experimental groups namely – control (non-radiated), in vitro irradiated (simulated radiotherapy following tooth extraction) and in vivo irradiated (extracted subsequent to oral cancer patient radiotherapy) teeth. Physiological loads were applied to the tooth models at the buccal and lingual cusp regions for all three groups (control, in vitro and in vivo). The principal tensile stress and the maximum shear stress were used to compare the results from different groups since it has been observed in previous studies that delamination of enamel from the underlying dentin was one of the major reasons for the failure of teeth following therapeutic radiation. From the FE data, we observed an increase in the principal tensile stress within the inner enamel region of in vivo irradiated teeth (9.97 ± 1.32 MPa) as compared to control/non-irradiated teeth (8.44 ± 1.57 MPa). Our model predicts that failure occurs at the inner enamel/DEJ interface due to extremely high tensile and maximum shear stresses in in vivo irradiated teeth which could be a cause of enamel delamination due to radiotherapy.  相似文献

The cytoplasmic dynein 1 cargo binding domain is formed by five subunits including the intermediate chain and the DYNLT, DYNLL, and DYNLRB light chain families. Six isoforms of the intermediate chain and two isoforms of each of the light chain families have been identified in mammals. There is evidence that different subunit isoforms are involved in regulating dynein function, in particular linking dynein to different cargoes. However, it is unclear how the subunit isoforms are assembled or if there is any specificity to their interactions. Co-immunoprecipitation using DYNLT-specific antibodies reveals that dynein complexes with DYNLT light chains also contain the DYNLL and DYNLRB light chains. The DYNLT light chains, but not DYNLL light chains, associate exclusively with the dynein complex. Yeast two-hybrid and co-immunoprecipitation assays demonstrate that both members of the DYNLT family are capable of forming homodimers and heterodimers. In addition, both homodimers of the DYNLT family bind all six intermediate chain isoforms. However, DYNLT heterodimers do not bind to the intermediate chain. Thus, whereas all combinations of DYNLT light chain dimers can be made, not all of the possible combinations of the isoforms are utilized during the assembly of the dynein complex.  相似文献

Background. Circumflex (CX) artery-related myocardial infarction (MI) is less well represented in trials on ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), most often due to the absence of significant ST-segment elevation, and therefore the outcome of these patients is less well known. We aimed to compare the outcome of patients with CX versus right coronary artery (RCA) related STEMI in a large cohort of patients treated with primary angioplasty. Methods. A total of 1683 consecutive patients with STEMI were studied. Patients who lacked STsegment elevation were also included if they had persistent chest pain with signs of ischaemia or regional wall motion abnormalities on echocardiography. Coronary angioplasty was performed according to standard procedures. After the intervention, all patients received aspirin and clopidogrel or ticlopidine. Results. The infarct-related vessel was the CX in 229 patients (14%) and the RCA in 600 patients (36%). No differences in baseline characteristics were present. Mean extent of ST-segment elevation or deviation was significantly higher in patients with the RCA as infarct-related vessel. Enzymatic infarct size was significantly higher in the CXrelated MI (1338±1117 IU/l vs. 1806±1498 IU/l, p<0.001). Left ventricular ejection fraction <45% was more often present in patients with CXrelated MI (37 vs. 26%, p<0.01). Both short- and long-term mortality were significantly higher in the CX-related MI. Conclusion. This study emphasises the fact that CX-related infarction has a worse prognosis compared with RCA-related infarction. (Neth Heart J 2007;15:286-90.)  相似文献
